Anything that makes it easier for this community to educate its children in good old fashioned subjects such as mathematics, science, and reading is a good thing. This effort on the part of Davis County should be applauded.

it won't intervene with that simple human touch. Dealing and talking with Librarians behind the counter is still my preference way of checking out books....

I live in Weber County, and the library branches up here have had self checkout for at least 5 years. Why don't you report about this newfangled "word wide web" thing next?

To This is news?
It's "news" because it is new to Davis County (but it's about time!) and to Hopefully: I like personal touch also, but waiting in line with kids is a pain. If the self checkout were quicker, I'd definitely use that rather than wait in line.
Now if they can do just like San Francisco and put the requested holds out in a special shelving area so those of us who request books can "pull" our holds and check them out ourselves.....

The advantage to self check-out is obvious. A Librarian checking out books is a waste of money and a waste of skills. In Salt Lake County, the CSS (clerks) handled the check-out before the automated system was in place.
And SLCo. has had separate "hold" shelves for years. No criticism is implied. I'm very glad the other library systems are getting on board. It benefits the libraries and their patrons, truly a win-win situation.

I am a graduate student studying library science. I am working on a presentation on self-checkout. I see the cost in the article. What company did they use? I'm researching different companies for my project.

It wouldn't let me complete my name in the box - Loren Farah
