I know you all stayed up late, but if the GRAMA bill died on the floor, I'm pretty sure it's not awaiting signature on the governor's desk.
Proofreading is your friend...
The headline sez you won one. the story sez you lost (or will lose) advertising revenue AND you lost (or will lose) access to records. Which one was the win? Seems like the papers lost both rounds? That's why I try not to believe the media. You can take any story and spin it and make it sound different. Did I miss something here? I love it when teh media makes up the facts.
Without advertising, the newspaper goes away. But, the newspaper had better access to records? What's the big deal. The legislature isn't dumb. If the newspaper goes away, who cares if they have access to records. Once the paper is gone, no reporters to hassle the records keepers. I think the legislature won on both counts.
NO DISCRIMINATION against Utah's poor by making PUBLIC NOTICES only online. I bet your homeless will simply use their blackberries to find out every policy effecting their lives.
It will be easier to access the information and it will cost the state less, plus more people will have access to the information. Sounds good to me.
Newspapers are going under because they were too slow to react to the internet. I buy one newspaper a year, on thanksgiving for the ads. The rest of the time I read it for free online. Start charging me for online access and I'll renew my subscription.
