I agree with Orrin Hatch. Why bring people who would destroy our society into it. I am trying very hard to support Pres. Obama, but my patience is being tried almost to the breaking point. I am sure the next front will be likely to do away with the Patriot Act. I am truly concerned about the liberalism. I think it is more than liberalism, I think it is irresponsibility and socialism. Isn't it grand, that people like Pelosi, Reid and others would try and destroy the very society that has given them a chance to be the big "Goofs" that they are!

We are all aware of what political party you belong to Hatch. The same one that tortured these detainees. If it wasn't for Bushes' torturing, then this wouldn't be happening. You really have no one to blame but the republicans.

Maybe we can close Gitmo and implode the buildings with the terrorists still inside. That way Obama keeps his promise without putting the rest of the country at risk.

It's not like we are bringing them to just walk the streets, they are going to prison. If we are so worried that our nation's prisons are not secure enough to hold them, which is the only reason I can imagine complaining about bringing them into America, then why aren't we sending all violent criminals to Gitmo? The US will never wash away the stain the Repubs tarnished us with because of the torture that went on in Gitmo until it is closed.

I'm sick and tired of all the liberal tears over GITMO "torture," with terrorists getting their 3 hot, square meals a day, fluffy pillows, comfy beds, free health care, free gym facilities. These are the worst of the worst enemy combatants. THese are people who likely have killed AMerican servicemen and women -- blown them up with IEDs. Or masterminded 9-11. 4 of them bragged in court documents this week that they were "proud" of 9-11. So while I don't condone "torture," i think a lot of ACLU liberals think just about anything is torture. These are not "soldiers" of a recognized country. They're terrorists. They don't belong on US soil, and don't deserve to be clogging our US federal court system with taxpayer-paid "public defender" and other costs.

@Torture 6:09: how do you know they're terrorists? Do you believe everything your "gummint" tells you? Many of them were in the wrong place at the wrong time, or were rounded up by their political enemies and turned over to us, no questions asked. Most of them were not even caught in the act of doing anything wrong at all. How about we put them on trial and allow them to defend themselves like any other human being? Are you afraid you'll find out you were wrong?

Hatch wants to undermine U.S.

"Bringing these detainees to the continental United States is tantamount to injecting a virus into a healthy body," Hatch told the Senate in a long speech Thursday."

The word "long" adequately describes anything this windbag says.

"Removing these detainees from a secure military facility with an airport, a highly trained security force, a secure infrastructure and located on an island outside the continental United States is, in my opinion, reckless," he said."

The United States is far more secure than Guantanamo Bay and there have been no attempts to attack Gitmo which bears out that "terrorists" aren't concerned about releasing those at Guantanamo.

"I would ask the president to rethink his deadline of closing Guantanamo less than 12 months from now. This is a usable facility that has merit and operational worthiness," Hatch said."

There is absolutely no reason why Guantanamo should remain open and only a mentally retarded individual would suggest that we waste TAXPAYER dollars on this facility when we have other facilities that will do just as fine.

Many of these individuals will be extradited to stand trial while others will be convicted in the United States and face justice something Hatch is opposed to

Jake, If you think that keeping them in prison here keeps us safe you need to rethink. Just a couple years ago a couple, untrained, bum off the street type of guys took over a prison holding an officer hostage for days. Just think what a trained terrorist could do. Then, when they get released. Look out! Read the article to see what I mean.

Now Earl, you are right, some of them won't be terrorists. We don't know for sure. We do know for sure some of them are. I agree, the torture is a black eye, and I wish it didn't happen. Part of that comes down to intelligence. Clinton's Admin. didn't help with that. I agree that putting them on trial may be what needs to be done. Those found guilty need to be shipped right back to Gitmo. That should satisfy others with only the guilty being kept there. As far as the torture, it is pretty well documented that this has been cleaned up.

None of these men have been convicted of a crime, or been proven to have taken part in any attacks on the U.S. or our forces therefore they can't be properly classified as enemy combatants instead they have to be classified as alleged terrorists since they don't wear the uniform of another country we are at war with.

Where is your proof they are terrorists? I guess everyone at Gitmo is a terrorist and that is why there have been over 245 terrorist attacks on the United States. The absurdity of your claim is shown by the fact that we have had only 1 terrorist attack on the U.S. since 2001. So what other imaginary terrorist acts did these men commit?

Sorry, but Obama is right for lots of big picture reasons. Gitmo is now a disasterous symbol for the U.S. By the way, rights we deem as valdi for all men, does that only apply to U.S. citizens?

The Declaration of Independence tells us that "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." It doesn't add "except for if you are accused of being a terrorist."

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states "Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person." It doesn't add "except if you are accused of being an enemy combatant." It goes on to say "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment" and "Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law."

The idea that these don't have rights because the U.S. government has classified them as terrorists, enemy combatants or anything else is false. We are on a dangerous road if we believe that its a piece of paper that gives us our rights even if it is the U.S. Constitution.

the Constitution of United States of America IS the ruling document of hte land.

Keep the place open. If the so called "torture" saved any American lives, it was worth it. Anything that happened at Gitmo was not even remotely comparable to what happened to U.S. servicement in Vietnam and WWII.

So, in the small mind of some of you dupes, no one there has done anything against the U.S. Are you getting your news from the Daily Kos? Last I heard, Sheik Kahlid Mohammad masterminded 9/11.
