Lets lock up some more of our natural resources and cut off the other foot!!! Or we can learn where new wealth comes from and use some common sense to resolve these issues here at home! To me its very simple.

Looks like the ES deal is needed

But hey, who needs a $100 million a year from energysolutoins? Not us, well all be just fine without jobs, state services, and education.

boy in BOYCOTT

boycott denial, is still DENIAL, and wait until June when CA rules on prop 8....it will rain HARSHNESS down on Utah

Coincidential?

That it just happens to be around the same time the Energy Industry started to lay off and pull out of Utah! Well Gov Huntsman I guess that's what we get when the Radical Groups are allowed to run the state!
Maybe you can get them to make up the difference, EH!

Eliminate myths and emotions

Let's look at the energy solution proposals without the emotional distortions of the facts that are so blatantly portrayed. From what I have researched and studied, these proposals are sound and safe, but because of myths and distortions, the state of Utah become the losers in hundreds of millions of tax producing dollars...and that impacts all of us. Where are the facts to backup the distortion. All I have heard is based on ignorance and emotion. Let's at least study the proposal to determine the facts before we "throw the baby and the bathwater" out together. Let's just calm down and objectively look at the facts, and then decide what is best for all of us. We can put this state on solid footing again if we make sound decisions based upon reality rather than political corrections and emotions.

But our state is so well run...

Tom

So much for the oft repeated boast that Utah is the "best managed" state in the Union!

Don't understand

No one ever talks about our wonderful tax cut, the flat tax that appeared on the 2007 returns was evident during the 2008 year. The only ones that really were able to take advantage of it are the really rich and they really saved a grundle, the higher end you are talking savings over the traditional tax often over 1/2 million dollars. This worked so well for Bush that the Governor thought he should benefit his pals as well. Well guess when the high rollers file? October 15 is the extension deadline, so the lose in revenue wasn't realized until the 4th quarter. The amazing thing is the rate was reduced this year, so they acually will save more this year, so expect an even larger short fall in 2009.

Whiggy

This is more proof that we are in this mess because the legislature failed to save enough money back when this State was experiencing record budget surpuluses. Thank you legislature.

Forecasting

Dumb article. There were structural shifts in the tax system during this time that account for these severe declines but do not mean that final collections will be that bad. Unfortunate timing to change the payment system, but these numbers grossly overstate the impact on Utah's revenue collections.

Dang

I thought we were the happiest place on earth?!

Anti-Federalist

Since when has a reduction in revenues indicated mis-managment of the revenues? What is means is less tax and "fee" revenues received by the state. Do your complaints indicate you want them to raise taxes and fees through addition sources. Like the recently passed increase in vehicle registration fees? Or increase the income or sales tax tax rate?
Some of this may be related to the reduction in sales tax rate for food. Should we press the legislature to restore the old rate?
Come on, think people!

Yes we need to go back to the old rate.

Our schools can't afford ANY cuts.

We will soon fall to 52nd in spending even though there are only 51 places!

Dixie Dan

Not to worry, just keep electing Republicans.

Health Care

The rich need pay more taxes so I can get me health care, people need to spend more money so we have lots of taxes revenue.

What I don't understand...

is if these lefty taxing idiots are so anxious to have everyone just give all our money to the govt so we can be taken care of, why don't they just write big checks to the govt themselves and give their incomes voluntarily?

The answer is pretty simple actually.

These people are low-life, low IQ, free-loading, leeches who don't have that much money to give. They are interested, as most liberals are, in getting OTHER PEOPLES MONEY TO LIVE ON.

They want other people to work hard and simply hand over the extra money they earn to be distributed to them while they sit on their butts and do nothing.

I have never witnessed a more self-indugent mentality in my life. ME ME ME.

Don't Raise Taxes

The legislature should not consider raising taxes to overcome the shortfall. Utahns (individuals and corporations) are paying less in taxes because they are making less and have less. If the state decides to raise taxes to make up its shortfall, then Utahs will have even less to spend, and the downward spiral will continue.

The state should look at deeper cuts--maybe painful, but that's what individuals and corporations are forced to do--and new revenue, such as bringing in new business.

fools you all are

if you believe taxing the rich is good. I've never received a job from a poor man and don't know anyone that has. To gain tax revenues you cut taxes for the rich so that they have money for research and development, inventories, investments, and hire new employees. Then tax revenue will soar. Even Clinton cut taxes becaue he understood Reaganomics. Don't expect Huntsman to understand it. RINOs are not conservatives. Only professes to be.

Instereo

Part of the responsibility of good government is to make sure the revenue stream (taxes) is something that doesn't flucuate a lot with the economy.

One of the things the conservatives have done in the past few years has been to trade a stable revenue stream for tax breaks and shifting of taxes to more unstable sources. This way they can say that government doesn't work when times change. What it really is though is gross irresponsibility on the part of the majority party here in Utah.

Their constant pushing for Market Economics and the bottom line has left us short in times of need. They did not plan for the future but gambled on the present. Shame on them.

In spite of their retoric about how we need small government, they have not funded even minimum government. You can't do away with government without inducing anarchy. Just look at Pakistan.

The fact is, somethings are best done by government (roads and education come to mind). We need our state to do those things and we need to fund it appropriately and get the demogogery out of our politics.

Its easy

Just stop paying housing, schooling, school lunch and breakfast and medical for illegal aliens and the budget problem would take care of itself.
