What's the story with the past WJHS player Joe whose name was on all the kids shoes?

Congratulations to the Jaguars for building on their talent this entire season. Solid fundamentals and teamwork will prevail almost every time... It certainly did during the playoffs. Coach Briggs, his staff, the fans and the great players of this championship team made this season unforgettable. Great job West Jordan!!!

Congrats to the Jags, Sawyer is a UNREAL player. Haws will get mr. basketball and Sawyer will get 5A MVP. Bitter sweet to see LP on the losing end.

What a great year for Utah HS basketball. Good luck at the next level to all those moving on.

Joe Montgomery was hit by a trax train on monday and was taken off life support friday night. He played basketball last year for WHSJ! That was the X-factor in the game! We will all miss you Joe.
re: Chris | 9:56 p.m. March 7, 2009
Joe was a senior on last year's team that died last night from injuries suffered in a TRAX accident.

What an exciting championship game!!!! Congratulations to West Jordan and Coach Briggs!!!! Go Jaguars!!!!!
rere: Chris | 10:18 p.m. March 7, 2009
That is a terrible tragedy. I'm glad WJ was able to pull out a win then.

It's not uncommon for teams to have names on shoes or other items. The West High cheerleaders have an "A" on the neck of their uniforms in honor of Alyssa, the girl who was killed in a car wreck after the first round of playoffs last year
West vs. West Jordan? | 10:19 p.m. March 7, 2009
After watching that yawner of a 4A game, we were all entertained by a great 5A championship.

West High would not hold a candle to either of the 5A teams, or any of the top ten 5A teams for that matter.

It will be proven next year when West makes the jump to 5A. They have not been competetive in 4A until this year in basketball. I cannot imagine what is in store for them in 5A. (Then again, Cyprus, Granger, Hunter... pretty weak league!)
Brad Jensen | 10:19 p.m. March 7, 2009
What a terrific run through state the West Jordan Jaguars enjoyed this season. It was a priveledge to watch this team come together throughout the 2008-2009 season, ultimately laying claim to both a Region III championship, along with Utah's top prize.

Contributions came from their big three, as well as from Udy and Holt amongst others. Another superb effort from one of Utah's top Prep coaches in Scott Briggs. His teams have always reflected discipline and fundamentals.

This championship, along with the one claimed by West Jordan during the 2000-2001 season, will make attractive bookends for sure. Throw in their two state runner-up finishes during this decade, the West Jordan Jaguars basketball program plays second fiddle to nobody.

Thanks for the memory!

Considering that Provo beat Lone Peak and was widely regarded as Utah's best team, I'm not buying into those comments about West. 5A isn't nearly as good as you give them credity for.
Go jaguars | 10:33 p.m. March 7, 2009
I just want to say THANK YOU to the Jaguars of West Jordan for bringing a little humility to the Knights and all of Utah county. Also to West for taking care of the Provo community. Awesome job and congrats.
Re: West v. West Jordan | 11:17 p.m. March 7, 2009
Yes year yes West will probably struggle in 5A, but consider West is losing 4 of its 5 starters.

This year however, West is up to the level of Region 7 and 5A basketball
BHS HIPEE HIP DUDE! | 11:27 p.m. March 7, 2009
Hello people of lone peak world and west jordan that was the biggest upset i have ever seen its weird that the last 2 years that lone peak has faced region 3 teams for the champion. ship are we at war? well... region 3 has gotten its revenge against Tyler Haws and the knights the jags were on fire they really wanted to run over the knights it was an amazing game tyler haws had a great game but sawyer, weireck and gallegos had a hot shooting game that made the upsetting game I am a BHS fan saying GOOD JOB REGION 3!!!!! dont comment back im gonna go to my bed of awsomness! BHS fan logging off!
4a | 11:28 p.m. March 7, 2009
West beat Provo who beat lone peak. I think they would be able to compete with west jordan or any other 5a team for that matter.

West Jordan would tear up West High no one on that team could even hope to contain Weireck or Ray or Mason. They dominated Mr. Basketball himself

Re: 4a | 5:25 a.m. March 8, 2009
I watched all the Championship Games and I think Bear River would beat anyone of the Teams that played in 4a or 5a. Bear Rivers defense would be able to stop anyone in the State. It would be nice to have a real State Champ instead of breaking it down by classification.
future | 7:03 a.m. March 8, 2009
What does the future hold for these young men at West Jordan? As a high school basketball fan it was a great weekend this week and in the past weeks!!!!
To all the seniors in all classifications 1A to 5A go into the world with the same desire you gave your teams. High school sports are great. It is apleasure to see all the emotion and desire that is expressed during these contests.

E-Center blues | 7:11 a.m. March 8, 2009
Let's get the championships back into a basketball arena (U of U, UVU, Weber St, SUU). The E-Center is not built for basketball. It's design makes it nearly impossible to shoot any high percentages. Most of the shooting percentages were down this year in the tournament. The backboards have 60+ feet to the first row. The sidelines are 15 feet away from the court. Go back to a college floor.
PRC | 9:02 a.m. March 8, 2009
Congrats to the Jags. What a great game. Considering the Loss of Joe and the tough competition of the 5-A tourney, the Jags played with great poise and heart. Having a son that played for coach Briggs on the '01 championship team I know what a great coach he is and how he makes the game all about the boys. No showboating on the sidlines just great solid coaching and a love for the Jaguars.
I'm so proud to be assosiated with this program and the real class that is shown by a great coaching staff and a great group of players.
BIG UPS | 9:37 a.m. March 8, 2009
Congratulations to WJHS State Champs! I've watched these young men for years when Jordan, Reyes, Mason and Tyson played on the same team and took the GOLD at the Utah Summers Games. Just one more victory to a talented group of young men!

Question: What is up with the schools not looking at Jordan Wierick? He is an outstanding player, with more heart and dedication than most I have seen? ( No, I'm not his mom). Jordan is disciplined, responsible and his dedication is unwavering! Watching to see who steps up and scoops him now!

Again, CONGRATS TO THE 5A STATE CHAMPS WJHS!!!! Ya'll are awesome!!!

Having played under Coach Briggs I know what kind of young men he develops off the court as well as on. The same tight knit group still exists among the players and everyone plays together. Great job Jags!

It might be nice to present a game ball from West Jordan to Joe Montgomery's Family...
Jag Alum | 11:00 a.m. March 8, 2009
I was there when we won it in 2001, and now that i'm out of high school, its nice to see the Jags representing Dub Jay so well. Super Proud of Coach Brigss and all the kids especially the little point guard heading off to Boise State. You mean to tell me Mason couldnt be playing at the U? Please Boylen take another look at IN STATE talent, thats not to even mention Gallegos going to Nebraska, and Weirick having no serious offers?!! Boylen, You're my boy but maybe you need to take trip out to the suburbs and catch some terrific High School b ball talent in your OWN backyard. Go JAGS!

Congratulation to the West Jordan High Hoops team and coach Briggs. I am so proud of you guys for the way you represented WJHS and the way you played with heart and passion.

2 titles and 4 title game appearances since 2001. You are an elite program and can be proud.

Thanks for the memories. You guys were awesome.

P.S. You still won't be able to win the WJ alumni tourney.
RE: Re: 4A | 12:16 p.m. March 8, 2009
Bear River? Give me a break. They would get owned. And the reason there can't be a overall state champ is because 1A, 2A, and 3A, and sometimes even 4A wouldn't stand a chance. A 4 or 5A school would win pretty much every year. So keep dreamin Bear River fan.. what a joke.
ZEKE | 12:36 p.m. March 8, 2009
Congratulations to West Jordan on a great win and a great year
LP Fan | 12:45 p.m. March 8, 2009
First off congratulations to WJ. Best team LP's played in state probably in their history. You guys came out and played great. Don't take anything away from LP, however. They won with humility, lost with humility. Being in the state title game three years in a row and 4 out of 5 is impressive. WJ just had the horses last night.

Tyler Haws's career started with a loss and ended with a loss, but what he did in between truly makes him a legend. Thanks, Ty. Thanks, LP. And once again, congratulations West Jordan, 2009 state champs

Playing 3A against 5A is like a DI vs a DII school in football. the best 3A team would never win aganst the best 5A

They actually already gave a game ball to Joes family, and I know they dedicated their win to him last night, the team has class and talent!! Way to go WJ, You are truly the best!!!

Way to go JAGS! I cant thank the team and fans enough for the incredible season. We showed that when we play as a TEAM we can go anywhere and beat anyone. The front row boys this year were awesome, you guys made us the most intimidating, exciting, and exhilirating crowd in high school basketball this year! here are my favorite moments:

The Preseason hype

The air-horn

being dubbed #1

losing to skyline, and handing it to davis the very next day.

Rayes' alley-oop dunk @ Riverton

Destroying copper hills @ home, and then chanting THIS IS OUR TOWN!

A thriller against Riverton @ home, and then chanting "here we come bingham"

Going into THE PIT, watching the greatest shooting performance of the entire HS BBall season(Rayes), winning by twenty and talking to the hilarious Bingham fans after.

Crushing the mighty pioneers.

Watching Jordan carry us to the 'Ship against D.H.S., d.h.s., d.h... d.... ...

Cheering with the Bingham fans inbetween the two games (the best part)

Taking down the #1, dominant, best team in Utah,... lumbering LP knights.

WINNING THE 5A BOYS STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO JAGS!

(this whole post is 200 words, win it JAGS!)

Go lp!!!! | 2:41 p.m. March 8, 2009

Somebody PLEASE!!!! | 2:45 p.m. March 8, 2009
Jordan Werick has been the leader of this team since the 2nd grade. The lad deserves a schlorship somewhere.

Also nice to see a kid from bingham partying at WJHS last night. Shows alot of class and sportsmanship. You Rule!!!!!!!!

West beat logan by 3, BR beat logan by 18,3, and 10. West Beat Provo by 12 and Provo beat LP so to say that BR couldn't hang with West or WJ is ridiculous.. im from Logan and BR man-handled us every time we played and West barley beat us, so i think they should play each other
DHS | 3:35 p.m. March 8, 2009
Congrats to WJ. They deserved it they earned it. Its always good when a classy group of kids and a classy coach win the big prize. It was special to see them win it for their friend who passed away. Way to go WJ. Thanks for all the great battles through AAU and HS games. Truly a great program with great kids. Kudos to Lone Peak they had a great run. They have a great program as well.
Once a Dart always a Dart.

Mr. anonymous @ 3:08 lets not throw a he said she said they won and we won argument. The fact of the matter is BR D Would never be able to run with WJ big 3 (or holt for that matter) As some one who has seen the "Athletes" at Bear River I can honestly say that as a 3a team you are a power house but would struggle to make it to 500 in 5a.

To have been apart of this season as a general high school basketball fan. We saw teams no one expected step up (Lehi, Mtn View, West, Weber). We saw titans fall. We saw the greatest state final this decade. We saw the emergence of Tyler Haws. We saw joy. We saw tears. We saw one of the greatest seasons of high school basketball the state has ever seen.

Thanks
to the front row boys.... | 4:42 p.m. March 8, 2009
