The curtain idea is another attempt to control for controls sake and will have little positive effect.
Since the legislators have declared that this wall is for the benefit of the children of non-drinkers, I believe each restaurant owner should add an anti-sin, sin-tax on those patrons who dont drink. They are the ones who benefit from this only-in-secret mixing of the demon liquor. They should pay for it.
Just like the auto-gratuity for large groups, there should be an auto charge-not-to-be-offended charge for groups that don't consume liquor. Now that would be fair.
If people don't like it, they can always go somewhere else.
The problem with the legislature making liquor reform decisions is that they always move backwards.
Waddoups and his group believe in forcing their own personal doctrine upon the people, the Taliban mentality is not acceptable. If you don't drink and don't want your children to see if then don't go there. It is like the girl wanting to join boy scouts instead of the girl scouts. If they want non alcoholic restaurants why not go into business and make mormon restaurants and allow others there freedoms of choice. I keep asking how to Mormons outside of Utah behave in these circumstances.
Justin, I disagree. The problem with the legislature's annual attempts at "liquor reform" is that they move laterally, exchanging one strange regulation for another, none of which do anything meaningful to reduce rates of drunken driving or consumption by minors. Of course, it may just be a big, funny practical joke on servers, who have to keep up with the regulations or risk big fines. And if that's the motivation in constantly altering the laws, they're doing a great job.
The problem is most tourists don't want to go to a bar and get drunk. They want to go to a restaurant have a drink, order dinner and relax over their meal and after with a drink or two. Now you are telling tourists they have to go to bars to drink.
Is this truly the year 2009, and we have state legislators more worried about their children seeing liquor poured than solving REAL problems like health insurance reform and properly funding education?? Isn't it fascinating that here in Utah, where personal property rights trump all, that our conservative legislature is more than happy to use the government to curtail responsible adult behavior?
Rather than promoting drunkenness and sloth, the legislature should be promoting an informed electorate. The legislature should be promoting the old fashioned values that made this Country great: temperance, prudence, moderation, and self-control.
Gee people you wont let your kids see alcohol, yet they can breath in as much smoggy air as they like.
Your more concerned about what your children see, rather than what harmful chemicals they are breathing everyday. Dont you see the irony in this?
Or are you blined by what you see?
"Air Heads" makes a valid point. This issue has galvanized a big segment of the public, yet many of these people stood (and stand) idly by when pollution generating petcoke power plants are proposed for the middle of their communities.
