Would these ninkin' poops ask how does our fellow bretheren survive outside of Utah in the normal world. Part of going to some restaurants is the atmosphere, it does not say look at me and drink me. Sorry but I waS raised to think for myself and my children were raised the same way and they good citizens - they are not afraid to see what others do. Sorry but if you don't like to see the drinks made then go to another restaurant like Village Inn

No Curtain

Requiring someone to mix drinks for another person behind closed doors is dangerous and not safe. I wouldn't order drinks in a bar in which I couldn't see the drinks actually being mixed.

How is it the church is an 'organization with interest in the bill'? Their interest should be 'we don't drink, so we've no interest'. The need, and ability, of the church to mess with this stuff is hypocrisy.

Alcohol Policy Reform?

The Governnor's office said: "Alcohol policy reform is a critical issue for the governor and the compromise is something that will help Utah's image nationally."

Nothing in this bill amounts to either policy or reform. It's pure and simple caving in to major campaign contributors in the "hospitality industry."

Sorry, Guv, sorry Legislature -- but we elect politicians to look out for us, not "Utah's image." And not for the "hospitality industry."

I don't give two hoots for Utah's image. But I do care about the carnage caused by this state's "alcohol policy."

And, make no mistake -- Utahns die daily because of it. MORE, not fewer or us, will die because of this "compromise."

The ONLY chance we have at reducing the carnage is REAL alcohol policy reform -- reform of dram shop laws to remove immunity from brewers, distillers, and distributors for their very lucrative promotion of highway carnage.

I know your contributors in the "hospitality industry" won't like it. But thousands of Utahns saved from death or maiming promoted by the "hospitality industry" will appreciate it.

Legislators? Governor? Are you listening?

Insecure

Are LDS people so insecure with themselves that just seeing a bottle of alcohol, or seeing a drink being made, entices them to take up drinking? I think the clear answer is yes. Just as with the gay marriage issue. LDS as so insecure in their own marriages that seeing a homosexual couple get a piece of paper could taint or lessen what they have.

When you leave the bubble of Utah LDS people, what do you do? Do you put those little cones around your heads like dogs so you can't see evil and be tempted?

Please stop trying to punish everyone else for your inner mistrusts. Those are you problems, so keep them there.

"I expect them (LDS CHURCH) to do exactly what they're doing," Valentine said. "They're a stakeholder. They're engaged."

The LDS church isn't a stake holder, they're a roadblock. THE CHURCH shouldn't be allowed to run to the legislature If THEY, the church, can't control their on members .

That's a great idea, build a wall around the drink mixing area of a resturant so that when they serve it to the person who ordered the drink, everyone can look and see him enjoying his mixed drink that no one saw the bartender mix.... yea this makes sense how? Utarded!

Wrex

Valentine had to compromise on his original vision. Now he's only asking for a 10 foot wall between the dining area and bar.

He originally wanted a 300 foot tall golden wall around the entire state!!! Ha ha I make myself laugh!

two steps forward one step back. Go get'em Gov!

Laura

According to the CDC and Utah.gov statistics of deaths due to guns are as follows: (average from 99-2006 - most current data available)
Suicide - 177
Homicide - 29
The rest is comprised of accidental and or unexplained for an average total of 213 deaths per year.

On the other hand, deaths due to DUI's in 2006 (most current data available) were 284.

284 DUI homicides or 29 gun Homicides?

Now, you tell me which kills more.

Likely the same people who want less alcohol laws also want hand gun restrictions. It's time to base our rants on facts.

Now, I don't like the current alcohol laws either but not because I want to drink but because I'm not in favor of government controlling every little aspect of our lives. What I am in favor of are strict and swift punishment for those who hurt people. If you kill someone and get away with it.....it's the defense attorneys who have committed the crime. When the parole board releases a murderer before any proven method of reform has been administered, the parole board has committed the crime!

Laura

BTW - I'm very much a LDS.

There is a wall around the bars in restaurants. It's called the outside wall and the only way through is the front door.

Mormons - if you don't want to see alcohol don't go into restaurants that serve!

The self-rightous mormon 'family' values is just another way of saying 'nanny state'.

das

As for seeing liquor at a restaurant, if you don't like it you can leave.

Bill Snyder

I didn't fight and die in the military so my right to drink myself into a stupor could be infringed.

Mikey

Why does the LDS church have any say in these bills. That is plain old DUMB! Do the Catholic, Methodist, and Jewish faiths get their voices heard? I think not. What happened to the separation of church and state? The LDS church should just mind their own business and keep their nose out of passing bills, that is not their job! Oh wait, I forgot that we live in Utah, the church sticks their nose in everyone's business here. So sad.

Likes wine with dinner.

No one has clarified if having a bottle of wine at one's table will become illegal because it will have to be poured in a way that children might see. Please hammer out this detail.

Thanks.

Your metaphor was a nice try, but sounded stupid. The cone around a dogs head is so they can't lick their wounds or bite at their stitches, so they can heal, not so they can't see what's around them.

But, I think utah is ridiculous with there alcohol laws. They make absolutely no sense. I honestly think that the only reason they have them is to make it a pain in the butt for those who drink. Also, the idea they have to make restaurants mix drinks in the back is utterly ridiculous. The whole hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil idea has got to go. If you honestly can't see a drink being made without wanting to cry or without being judge-mental or without being tempted beyond your strength, maybe you should move to the middle of the dessert and join the polygamist and be an extremist like them, without any type of media, so you can be protected from this awful world. Because all the alcohol laws in Utah are extremely unnecessary and ridiculous along with everyone who supports them.

re: Laura

Your assessment of the numbers is poor at best. Why do you exclude the suicide numbers from guns and not the people that were drunk in the DUI deaths and died?

The truth is neither guns nor alcohol kill people, people kill people. You legislate and educate against improper use of things, not the things themselves. Otherwise it just shows a great deal of ignorance to the actual problem. People can responsibly use guns and drink alcohol and those that do should not be penalized because of those that do not.

In the US, 33 states have "dry" counties. Some, like Texas have a majority of dry counties. Three, like Tennessee, are dry by default and require that counties submit requests for licences. On the other hand, some states, like Utah, require counties to adhere to the state law, thus making it illegal to go dry! Churches, and people who don't like drinking for any reason, have influence over laws in plenty of places besides Utah.

Michael

I wish the Mormons would butt out of every little thing. Nosy, snoopy, paranoid people they are.
They should take care of themselves, and quit trying to run everybody else's lives.
Being obstinate and pushy get them run out of places.
People didn't like it then, and don't like it now. Heck, they killed Joseph Smith because he was trying to rule over them.
