I think this is a really good idea. I've seen ultrasound video of a fetus, at around 12 weeks, thrashing around violently in reaction to painful stimuli. It was horrible to see, and it's something I've never forgotten. That's the exact age most babies are at when they're aborted, between 8 - 20 weeks, roughly, and there's no doubt in my mind that they can feel horrible pain during an abortion. This bill has my complete support.
Good for the Utah Senate! Why is the "right" of a woman to remain in ignorance about the procedure she is planning to undergo supposed to be a good thing? I should think all the information available would help in making a truly informed decision--one that she will not later regret.
It appears to me that abortion rights proponents do all they can to keep information from women--as though they don't trust women to make wise choices if they weighed ALL the information.
I personally think an abortion over 10 weeks is wrong. Women still need to have their rights, but its not an embryo forever.
If abortion is wrong, and I believe it generally is, why do abortion opponents resort to pseudo- science and scare tactics to stop it?
A pain response comes from the brain. Unless that portion of the brain is developed, then the fetus will not feel pain.
I support Buttars and his comments! Thank you for thinking of the rights of the unborn.
The answer to your question is that the people have been prohibited from doing what should really be done, restricting abortion, by unelected judges who fabricated a constitutional right to kill the unborn where none existed, i.e. Roe v. Wade.
I reject your characterization of these measures as "pseudo-science and scare tactics", and I doubt the sincerity of your claim to believe that abortion is "generally" wrong. People who truly believe that abortion is wrong do not call measures such as these "pseudo-science" or "scare tactics." That is the language of the pro-abortion crowd.
The legislature continues to blow any chance of having an impact on our generally poor thinking about abortion. It would be nice if this debate were about neurology or feeling pain or when a child is a child. Maybe we could settle it. But it isn't. It's about lives.
We know that somehow life is part of what we want to think about. Mother's lives. Parents' lives. Children's lives. But we don't talk about life as if we have respect for it. Instead, we turn it into a bludgeon to use against political enemies. Stepping back a little, we can see that the debate from both sides diminishes life. Objectifies it, removing it from any connection whatsoever with a person. The whole rhetoric of abortion in America abuses mothers, children, fathers, grandparents.
We need a new language of life that does not trivialize the pain of a mother or a fetus by using that genuine suffering to increase campaign funds or maintain power in a legislature. Let the people do th the thinking and choosing without the legislature. We may get happier outcomes.
This is an issue for people, not grumpy old politicians.
Choice is an individuals rights. There are many reason to abort fetuses and general from defective feteses. What is more cruel, force the birth of children with birth defects then shun them with contempt and dsilike by the public at large all their lives? There has never been an out cry by these prolifers to say they will take these children and care for them all their unnatural lives yet they want to force it on others. A fetus does not become a person until it is born and it is living on its own. What prolifers should be doing is advocating abstention instead of meddeling with everyones right to chose. Their personal convictions are not there's to impose on me or any other person. The parents have the right of choice and custody of what and how they determine that choice. Society and government doesn't want anything to do with defective children yet they think they can dictate others decisions. The parents are the only concience and voice of choice, others are interfering with that choice.
At approximately 10 weeks, give or take a week or so, there IS brain activity.
It's funny how the left are so concerned about what animals feel,
but grow so cold about it when it comes to the developing human baby.
Abortion is murder. Abortionists and women who have abortions are murders.
In the Bible, we learn that John the Baptist leaped in his mother's womb, upon arrival of pregnant Mary and her son Jesus. Babies feel and know things before they are born. I know with my first child, he could feel when my husband was coming to visit me at work. I began to recognize the happy and excited feeling of my child and know that my husband would soon enter through the doorway.
