French heritage

I am offended that Sen. Scott McCoy would make a comment that was characterized as joke that involves my heritage. France is very responsible in looking at wise and environmentally friendly choices in providing for the energy needs of both her own citizens but also in reducing the carbon foot-print that would be left on all of Europe.

How insensitive - Sen. Scott McCoy should apologize and be forced to step down from any committee leadership positions for his remarks.

Whiggy

By supporting nuclear power, the legislature is seeking to divert attention from the fact that its failure to save money for hard economic times has caused this State deep and irreparable harm. The legislature is acting as if nuclear power will solve all of this State's economic problems. It will not. All it will do is bring hazardous materials into this State that will not be safe for thousands of years.

To French Heritage 12:53 - So you're French, huh? What were you running from when you decided to come to the U.S.?

To Whiggy 1:06 - Get educated about nuclear power before you pop off. Spent nuclear fuel is so low-level that you could eat a plate of it and you would get less irradiated than you would from a single chest x-ray.

Frenchy

I thought McCoy's comment was pretty funny. Whatever happened to freedom fries?

Why can't we do it?

Why do so many just assume we can't produce N-Energy safely?

They've been doing it in Japan, France, Germany, all the countries most granolas point to as a good example of low carbon lifestyle... So why can't WE do it?

Mustang-Man

Japan built the largest Necular power plant in the world on top of a major unknown fault and when it slipped the plant did everything that it was suppose to do. It shut down and only had a very minor discharge of liquid that was cleaned up and put into two five gallon buckets. N-Power Plants can be build very safely and economically. Yes there is a need to find a way to store the spent fuel until such a time that the science community can come up with a way to use it up entirely. We need the source for power so that we can compete with other countries who subsidize their electrical needs which allow them to produce goods cheaper than the USA.
Go Necular!!!

For Nuclear

Without nuclear in the mix of alternative energy, Utah will always rely on outside sources (and pricing) to satisfy its energy demands. Nuclear is safe. France is actually 80% self-generated nuclear powered electricity and Italy is moving more to nuclear. You can't build enough wind farm sites or solar arrays to handle the appetite of a growing Utah.

Nuclear generation only emits water vapor (clouds) into the atmosphere unlike coal and natural gas.

@ For Nuclear

Just to correct a misstatment -- Utah is a net exporter of energy. We don't need to import it from other states. In fact, the reason we're now worried about carbon taxes and carbon emissions is because Utah exports so much coal-fired power to California, we're now subject to California's emission laws and Calfornia's Global Solutions Act of 2006 is what nixed IPP#3 a few years ago.

Bottom line is that nuclear power is expensive, very water intensive, and leaves waste that has not been solved in terms of effective disposal. If we build nuclear, it will probably be exported to California to meet that state's emission standards, but Utah will be saddled with water disputes between agriculture and energy production, nuclear waste, and higher power rates to finance the nuclear plant that will take 10 to 15 years to approve/build before one kWh is ever produced!

Utah's future is in solar and geothermal! The time and money to to build nuclear will be better spent on cleaner, less controversial energy projects that will benefit rural communities and NOT create water wars!

Neurotic Newman

The article states:
"Sen. Ross Romero, D-Salt Lake, who voted against the resolution, said he disagreed with its claims that nuclear power was cost-effective, viable and safe.

'I don't think it has been adequately proven that we reprocess or recycle spent fuel properly,' Romero said."

There is no reprocessing or recyccling of spent fuel allowed in the US at this time. That is why we have the storage issues for spent nuclear fuel. Many countries in Europe have been reprocessing and recycling spent waste for years. As long as proper protocol is followed it can be safely done.

nuke power

It's no surprise that senator Chris Buttars would support a radioactive power plant in Utah. After all, Buttars and nuclear waste have a lot in common: both are very toxic to Utah!

Insensitive

How could Sen. McCoy make such insensitive comments towards all French people. He intent was obviously to disparage all French people. He should be required to resign immediately in disgrace. There will be a rally on the capitol steps to force the Senate to take action against him. Sen. Buttars will speak at the rally.

Nuclear Power is a very high option. As is Wind. We don't need any more dams. We don't need fuel that is grown from the ground that needs to produce food. We don't need more coal messes. We can thank Pres Carter for stopping our nuclear power progress. Lets be progressive and have Utah get out there and be ahead instead of behind. It's safe where do you think the nuclear subs put their waste.
