Easy solution: put these DC whiners back into Maryland where they came from and call it good! There is no need to form a new state or waste more time arguing about whether they deserve representation in Congress!

Whiggy

The next thing we know, D.C. will be calling for the re-establishment of the Old Confederate States of America so D.C. can join up.

lost in DC

i don;t agree with statehood for the district, but at least it would be a constitutional approach, something hatch seems willing to ignore.

I agree

...with basinboy - give the Maryland side of DC back to the Commonwealth of Maryland, just as it happened many years ago for the Virginia side. No Constitutional problems with this approach - it is a no-brainer.

John

A voting seat in the House is just unconstitutional, and any idiot should see that from the plain language of the Constitution.

It is not worth the offered bribe of a temporary additional seat for Utah, or even the gun bill that some are trying to attach.

The least bad solution is to give DC back to Maryland (as was done with the Virginia portion of the District long ago).

No statehood.

There is no reaon for Washington DC, already a city, to declare itself an independent state. Don't know what state it was formerly a part of but it should revert to the state of origin. What these congressmen are doing is trying to make themselve an independent entity under the jurisdiciton of itself. A country within a country is what isolation of themselves amounts to. It is an attempt to put themselves above the constitution of the US and create thier own constitution by becomeing a state and become the most powerful state of the union.

Regardless of your position on DC voting in Congress, it is 100% unconstitutional.

Our Constitution is what has given us this great nation. No other people in the history of mankind has had such individual freedom and prosperity.

Our Constitution must be adhered to. If DC wants to become a state with voting rights then the Constitution needs to be amended.

John

Our Senators need to wait until next years census and then the head count kill the argument for any representation for D.C.
It't just the constitution Mr. Hatch

It would make the most sense to merge DC back with Maryland. But would Maryland accept DC? It is the murder capital of the country. Despite very strict gun control violent crime is out of control. Would Maryland want a local government dedicated to pursing failed gun policies instead of dealing with crime? Where else but DC would a government be so blind to reality.

I see the Demonazi's are trying another end run around the Constitution. Get rid of the corrupt DC gov.

Trade?

Can Utah trade in its Statehood for soverignty? D/C could become Utah, and we could become the Nation of Deseret. Everyone would be much happier!

How about secession?

DC could declare itself independent. Maybe they could build a huge wall to keep the rest of us out. Maybe the huge wall could keep the congressmen and the bureaucrats in.

WatchDog

We could build a fence around DC - and keep all our corrupted political leaders inside. Now, that would be a benefit to us all. Hatch included.

In order to get out, a class on what is in our constitution could be required. A renewed oath to support their voting constituents, along with a severe penality for not doing so, would also be nice.

Why do we keep electing these clowns? Sheesh!

All of you who are calling us D.C. residents whiners need to research the history and the facts of the situation before you comment or pass judgment. District residents are taxed just as other states are and yet have no vote, no say in where those taxed dollars go. Since you want to bring up the greatness of this country, isn't taxation without representation what this country was founded upon? What was the reason we split with the Queen again? Taxation without representation....duh. We pay taxes, and send soldiers to fight for democracy in Iraq and other countries and yet have no democracy in our own city. You can't simply call us "whiners" because we have a valid point. Either stop taxing us without representation (which is tyranny) or give us representation. It is very simple.

The dirty little secret is this: The powers that be in DC would not even consider the reversion to Maryland because they would lose the significant, special power they have now. They would lose unique status in trade for becoming just another Maryland county. The Maryland repatriation method is the best for all involved, including the current residents of DC. It gets Congress out of the city administration business, and the residents of the city would get a representative, and two senators out of the deal. I think we could do it without the consent of the State of Maryland, BTW. It was their land; we'd just be giving it back. The federal part of the city (the National Mall and surrounding buildings, the current jurisdiction of the Capitol Police) could be considered a federal installation within a State. Heck, the largest department of the federal government, the DOD, is an office building wholly in the State of Virginia, so the need for a completely separate federal district has passed.
