Utah has had moral issues since 1847--so what's new?

@ Mark from Captain Kirk | 2:51 p.m. March 3, 2009
I don't know too many utahns who are sexually repressed. Yes we have stardards. We believe in abstinence before marriage and fidelity after marriage.

All things that are time tested standards of sucessful societies.

But you know what. We get married and have healthy sex lives.

You suppose that if a person is counselled not to go to strip bars, have multiple partners, or look at porn that they are repressed.

I would suggest that those who look at porn and go to strip bars are probably more sexually frustrated than the average married man.

I thought that having a Home, Wife & Kids was still what the average guy really wants. Everything else is just a poor substitute.

>>OOOOh a study from a University who teaches global warming, and liberalism. I'm sure this study is on the up and up.

Harvard has zero credibility on social issues. >

Regarding, HBS, you forgot Henry B. Eyring and Robert D. Hales, genius. The were gifts of Harvard Business School, too.
Edelman is Bogus! | 2:55 p.m. March 3, 2009
Kudos to the poster who caught Edelman's reference to the non-existent Forrester Research that erroneously reported that pornography is a $12B business in America and therefore should be considered "mainstream". Forbes wrote an article in 2001 exposing this MYTH.

So what should we do? Abandon our "repressive" stance on pornography? Why? Because 5 people in a zip code with a population of 50 (even at the height of the tourist season) look at porn? So what?

Should we overlook the fact that the distinguished professor Edelman cites a BOGUS REPORT that hyped a number promoted by no less a reliable source than the AVN ~ the Adult Video Network? And should we, YET AGAIN, be intimidated by his HARVARD credentials and take him at face value?

Hey, stupid Utahns, stop trying to cozy up to the Eastern Establishment. They HATE you because your bouergois values get in the way of their drug use and kinky sex. WAKE UP and stop being suckered in by the IVY LEAGUERS WHO openly and obviously LIE!!They want nothing less than TO DESTROY YOU!!! Stop making excuses for them, and stop being impressed by HARVARD.
Honest Mormon | 2:56 p.m. March 3, 2009
It would be nice if mormons tried being honest with themselves and everyone else for a change! You know your husbands are sneeking around looking at porno! They use to have to go out of town to buy it so no one would recognize them in the stores. Now they just have to go online!
We use to have our cub scouts clean up the roads leading into our pre-dominate mormon neighborhoods until we discovered they were picking up more playboys than fast food litter! We came to the conclusion that all the men from our neighborhood were chucking their magazines out the car windows before they got home so their wives wouldn't see that they had bought them again!

And the claims that this is a conspiracy against UT and Mormons begins in 3, 2, 1....

So many whiny victims on this message board that think the world is out to destroy the church.

Personally, the results are not surprising at all. Sad, but not surprising.
Spencer | 3:00 p.m. March 3, 2009
Anyone notice that the only high porn zip code in Salt Lake County is the University of Utah?

The others are little podunk communities where the men are lonely miners etc.

Concerned | 3:01 p.m. March 3, 2009
I wish there were more focus in the media on the harm done to women in and through porn. I think the focus of our discussions about pornography is too often limited to the question of religious morality.
In the U.S., study after study has shown that many women in porn were sexually abused as children, are drug-addicted, or are coerced by pimps. ALL people need to stand up for women and girls by standing against pornography, which depicts women as less than human objects who exist solely to sexually service men. Let's end the shallow debate about whether pornography is moral or immoral, only in the strict, religious sense of the word. There is so much more at stake here.
Tyler | 3:17 p.m. March 3, 2009
Do the math people! Even if we have more hypocrites, we only have 2 more per every 1000 people than other states! And last time I checked, we had a lot more than 5 in every 1000 people that DON'T go to any church on Sunday...
@Mormon Bishop from Cpt Kirk | 3:23 p.m. March 3, 2009
I agree with your primary concern.
Those who counsel with others know there is a problem and for each individual addicted to porn it is a big problem.

My point is that we don't need a message of lies and distortions that blares
"UTAH IS #1 IN PORN SUBSCRIPTIONS"
This is just bad journalism and does not help anyone and hurts the reputation of everyone who lives here.

I'm not trying to downplay any real problems .. I'm just denouncing dishonesty of thus article.

Whether these people are mormon or not, watch your kids every minute. Keep your eye on them when they are in the back yard and don't let them walk down to the convenience store alone.

btw if you mistakenly believe porn is only marketed to men, I would point out the sanitized and women marketed porn on Cable channels. Also in the Bible Belt of the South, the pay per view channels which once had first run major movies, are now 95% porn, and so embarrassingly putrid titles, I wouldn't even want a kid to scan the names.

"at least we are sober'
Really, that is the biggest lie about Utah you've ever tried to sell. Your repressive private clubs don't stop a single alcoholic, and probably making it a taboo, makes it MORE popular. I learned to drink with my Mormon cousins, I've been in my uncles home when a brethren drops by and ashtrays and beer bottles fly under couches like a RAID.
Even though the room smelled like a brewery on fire, every one plays along with the charade.
Porn is the same thing, you make it TABOO, and it is even MORE POPULAR.
Rick | 4:28 p.m. March 3, 2009
Having lived 25 years in Utah, and 25 years out of Utah...there is only draw one conclusion:
Utah - [Mormons and non-Mormons alike] is a collection of extremes.
A state full of - See what I've got and what you've not.

Whether it's:
55 or 95 on the freeways.
Flaming-in-your-face-Gay or a Homo-phobe.
Saint or Sinner
Everything seems to be in the opposite extremes.

I live in Seattle,
I couldn't tell you who is or is not anything.
Mormon / non-Mormon
Gay / straight

Maybe I'm to simple to believe that,
We're all sinners and we're all going to hell.
No one escapes it.
And just like the sinking of the Titanic,
we'll all drown eventually.

There is only one salvation,
and I rejoice in accepting Jesus the Christ as Lord and Savior of the Universe.
So, Yes, I'd gladly give my life preserver to my friends. Isn't that what sharing the Gospel is supposed to be?
Dave | 4:31 p.m. March 3, 2009
Where you and I see naked bodies, legislators see a new "revenue stream". Don't tell legislators how many Utahns like it, they'll probably figure a way to tax it!

ONline is only place in that NON-MORMONS can get porn.

There is absolutely no reason to assume mormons are accessing porn any more than anyone else in utah.

This survey does NOT say WHO is accessing the porn.

But of course NON-mormons and ANTI-mormons love think the worst of mormons.

And mormons outside of Utah love to think they are better when they are really no different.

All this survey proves is that if someone can't get it at a store they will find porn somewhere else.

NOTHING ELSE CAN BE CONCLUDED!

I am not surprised by all the all comments that the LDS people are making trying to explain why this article is wrong.
Face it conservatives, you are the biggest Hippocrates in the world, everyone knows it and the sooner that you face the fact you will be able to help yourselves.

How embarrassing for the "traditional family" that these high porn states try to defend. I for one would prefer a non- traditional family with morals and values then one of these fake conservative/LDS hypercritical families. Just what are they trying to protect? They are the whole problem.

Anyone notice that the highest rate in the highest state was in the zip code surrounding the University of Utah? I'm not suggesting anything, just pointing out a fact... Quit dinking around and get to class! The Utes truly are #1 in spite of the BCS. Also, if I understood the data, Utah is not #1 per capita, but rather #1 per household. Since the average household in Utah has twice as many people in it, does that mean the problem is only half as big as it looks? :o) Last, but not least, if the trib threads are any indicator, porn use is pretty common among mo-haters. Heck, some of them probably subscribe to multiple sites and cover the quota for a couple thousand households all by themselves. When porn is less accessible through adult entertainment stores, video stores, and on news stands, people access it via the internet. When I lived in Chile, practically every newspaper had a naked woman on the front cover. For that and other reasons, I'll bet their subscription rate is considerably lower than our national average - but their porn issues are much more serious. Porn is a problem everywhere!
no one | 5:12 p.m. March 3, 2009
should look at Porn Mormons, catholicsm bhuddists! These posts by crazy utards is hilarious. Please stop with you sheltered comments about how the church is better outside of utah dn that you now live in california or whatever. I live in corona calfornia and lived in provo while in college and there are hyprocrites where you go. That comment about the church is better is stupid and ignorant so go back to utah with that attitude.
Sad Story | 5:18 p.m. March 3, 2009
I agree this story is sad, It not good to be #1! However, journalism is always misleading. Here is an example. ( A Sevier County zip code is listed in the story. This zip code is for a town named Sevier in Sevier County. This town has at the most 20 houses. So, it made the list of zip codes with the highest percentage of subscriptions, maybe all 20 houses have subscriptions, or maybe it is just one house. Maybe if it is just one house he is LDS or maybe he is not. (Or she) sorry I made that assumption. Is this an LDS problem? or is it a problem of the LDS opposition living in Utah? Assumptions??? Is the LDS church causing this with it's teachings? You know the repressing sexuality theory. Or are those individuals responsible for there behavior? Journalism? or social engineering?

For all of you, using this as any pathetic attempt to attack the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, get real. As someone already clearly stated, this was only where there were low LDS populations. This only proves that people ARE in fact living what they are supposed to.
Let's try some constructive criticisms next time. I don't recall too many people suggesting plans on how we can lower that awfully high rate...
what the world needs now... | 5:41 p.m. March 3, 2009
Does this study have statistical flaws? Yes--a review of the comments will expose most of them.

Do Mormons have trouble with porn? Yes, and I don't really care if their rate of use is greater or less than non-Mormons. I think the key is, for those who become addicted, we need to get them help. A bishop posting earlier noted what a problem it is. If it is affecting your life, if it is causing you to view people as objects, if it is taking time from your family--you need help. If you're Mormon, see your bishop. If you're not, there are a lot of good addiction resources/groups. Please find one for your sake and your family's.

As for the non-Utah Mormons bashing the Utah Mormons, what's up with that? Aren't we all different versions of the same, flawed children trying (and often failing) to follow what we know is right? Don't we get enough bashing from detractors?

Oh, and would someone please send me a dollar for every time "hypocrite" is used as a slam on this board? I need to replenish my 401-K...
Re: Sad Story | 5:49 p.m. March 3, 2009
Also, remember that it is not households but Broadband connections (high speed internet). I bet very few of those 20 houses in Sevier (or also in San Juan County) have Broadband. But let's assume that all 20 do. At 5.4% that would be 1 household. Does not seem like much of a epidemic when you really look at the facts.
Jenifer | 6:07 p.m. March 3, 2009
You people need to quit covering your sins. At least the rest of us can admit it when we do something instead of sweeping it under the carpet continuously day after day, year after year. Sober up Utah, to the fact that you have a problem. Quit blaming the nonmembers and inactive members for everything that goes wrong in Utah. Own up to your own misbehaving.
G | 6:13 p.m. March 3, 2009
I knew this article would generate comments, but this is ridiculous. Many of the comments here are already pointed out in the article and most of the comments are just repeats of other peoples comments. Cant we stop wasting other peoples time and at least READ what has been written BEFORE adding to it.

For those of you who are so desperately falling over yourselves to criticize the LDS church just give it a rest. Mormons have sexual desires (Big Shocker!) but not any more than anyone else in the world.

LDS Church leaders have long understood that internet porn is a plague on the church. Those who once prided themselves in resisting all manner of impropriety, now find themselves sideswiped by the sudden ability to anonymously access the forbidden.

Instead of mocking the Mormons, as usual, we should be outraged at the people that foisted their porn on people that spiritually do not desire it (in spite of have the desiring as any human being).

Providing porn to Mormons is like providing alcohol to a recovering alcoholic. Mormons should have a right to be free from such overpowering temptations.

What a churchie retort.......The guy had his wife, etc. go on the internet "as he did not know if he could resist" (or words to that effect). I grew up in the midwest and was raised a Catholic------I don't need my wife to go on the internet for me to stay away from porn?! Yes, I do at times have an adult beverage, but as an adult I am able to control myself. Maybe they need a "CTR" class for all the local persuasion men in this state so that they will not "wander" off the beat'n path. GIVE ME A BREAK!!

"one possibility is that Utah consumers find it difficult to obtain their desired adult entertainment through retail purchases."

D'ya think?!?

I remember the pickets (my dad's Bountiful ward provided such on a regular schedule--it was, as I recall, an LDS Church "calling") at "adult" book/video outlets decades back.

I also remember vigilantes publicizing the license plates of customers entering salacious, but lawful, businesses.

As I recall, the Guardians of Virtue on one call-in program were outraged that anyone would assume that the standards of a community's residents -- as revealed by their commercial activity -- could in any way define or determine "community standards!"
Duh | 6:37 p.m. March 3, 2009
Duh....that's cause unlike most states, you can't go to the local grocery store or adult store and buy it yourself. This has almost nothing to do with concealment. It's the same reason why many Utahns visit Las Vegas, Wendover, etc. Because Utah is one of the few states that doesn't allow any type of gambling.

I have a family member who got hooked on porn. The FBI had been watching him. He was arrested, his computer confiscated and put in jail. It was printed in the arrest section of the paper. He had gone so far as to begin looking at child porn. What an embarrassment for our entire family. He was also a High Priest in the Mormon church and held a high ranking calling. I'm not writing this to say that non-mormons don't get addicted to porn, I'm sure it's a problem for many regardless of religious beliefs. I would like to tell you that the Internet is policed by the FBI and getting to deep into porn and having children's porn images will result in serious charges (sexual exploitation of a minor). My relative had a felony I believe. The FBI is trying to protect the innocent exploited children out there on the other end of the computer screen. Be careful you porn viewers...the FBI is monitoring.

the naysayers and mormon apologists flock to the boards thinking of and reciting every excuse they can find for this. What comes of that? The same thing as the teen suicide rate where Utah is number 1 for 14 years running now. Next year Utah will be 15 years running, the year after it will be 16.

It's the people who don't like to hear or see anything wrong with their church that are part of the perpetuation of these problems. And many more....unflattering, ugly statistics. Denial is an ugly thing. Total blindness in some of these things borders criminal.

Utah Legislature should tax the porn subscription sites. This could be the answer to our budget woes.
mark | 6:55 p.m. March 3, 2009
Maybe a queer legislator in Utah, (you know the guy,) should author a bill which lets all the consumers of porn, have their names and addresses to be published in the newspaper, just like sexual predators.
How many Judges, and Police Chiefs, and even BISHOPS would find that legislation....embarrassing?

the real story | 7:53 p.m. March 3, 2009
this is not a surprise, we've heard similar reports on google searches. The REAL story, and I would LOVE to get a break down on this is:

WHAT IS THE BREAKDOWN ON THE TYPE OF PORN?

I mean, there are many flavors of porn and various sites target various types. Wouldn't it be the ultimate irony to find out that it was primarily GAY porn? And the next question, what is the breakdown on women vs men? Can we be so sure that there isn't a significant amount of women who participate in this for whatever reason?

I would love to see some detailed and FAIR research on this. No, not the mormon website FAIR, they're already too busy working overtime to prepare a logical response to this and it will only perpetuate the blindness to the problem. Let's get to the meat of the matter. See it for what it is....
TO: The Real Story | 8:09 p.m. March 3, 2009
#1 What researchers found is that porn goes down on Sundays in the areas where more people report they attend church on a weekly basis.

In Red States the type of porn tended to be wife swapping/web cam/ vouyerism. In Blue states it was adult escort type porn.
