Cool pictures.
It is refreshing to see such a fine reminder of this Country's greatness. This ship represents the now old fashioned values that made this Country great: loyalty, honesty, fidelity, and public service.
You have to jump through a few hoops to visit the ship, or at least get near it. I haven't had the time to try it yet. I believe you can also see it on a cruise around Pearl Harbor, but I'm not sure how much is visible, if any.
I can still remember collecting pennies as a kid, to go towards some kind of monument.
I was stationed at Pearl Harbor and I have been to the Utah Memorial. It was finished in 2004 and is now much more then a plaque. I felt honored to be there both as a sailor and a Utah native. You can still see the large, rusty hulk of the ship sticking out of the water. It is one of the "unknown" monuments in Pearl Harbor because of its location on Ford Island. You have to be a guest of the officer quarters or military member to get there. It is well worth any hoops you have to jump through though. It is a great place to sit and contemplate what happened there without all the tourist snapping pictures and talking. I went in the morning around 7:00 a.m. with my father and it was almost like a trip back in time for us.
