Crises generally aligns attitudes in any family. But it sounds like Republican leadership is doing better at leading. That's good to hear.
It is a strategy of radical organizers to cause dissension among allies, to agitate and divide. In my view, the radicals won by intimidating our Republican leadership into distancing themselves and even responding to Buttars' comments.
Republican leadership should have simply left it at "Buttars has a right to free speech" and stayed out of it. Instead, they gave power to the Alinksy agitators running the campaign of oppression pitting the cultural "haves and have-nots" against(e.g. marriage) each other.
I suggest that Republican elected officials read the Rules for Radicals manual today.
How can a legislative session filled with the vitriolic hate spewed out by Senator Buttars and supported by the the senate leaders be kind and gentle?
These guys are self delusional Maybe some shock therapy will bring them back to reality.
I read the D-News comments with the faint hope that I'll eventually see some weakening of the Taliban mindset prevalent in Utah. Alas, I can't say that there is any less strength in the ultraconservative dominance in the Legislature and in the general public. After nearly 30 years there, I'm relieved to be somewhere else now, but saddened that such a lovely place remains so firmly dominated by such a benighted and retrograde majority. This new civility by the extremist majority in the Legislature is probably nothing more than a curious artifact.
divide and conquer is what Buttars and the eagle forum seem bent on doing, they seem bent on creating a mentality of us against them where as the new leaders seem to have actually adopted a philosophy of inclusiveness with regards to representation by allowing senators to speak during session (not ignoring the lights requesting time), unfortunately there is still enough of the old school left to kill bills in committee without a fair and open debate of the floor. So you are right heir does seem to be this radical movement but it seems to be coming from the other side with Buttars and friends seeking to silence and vilify anyone that does not march lock step with their radical Christian philosophy. Dont make the mistake of thinking just because you consider yourself Christian that you are safe from their wrath, people like Buttars only see the way to be Christian one way, their way.
Perhaps there's a lovefest among legislators, but what about the rants and badgering that several legislators have greeted citizen testimony with? Have you forgotten Rep. Dougall threatening a Park City Sch. District employee? Rep. Oda even harassed university students? These guys are bullies, and no one has stopped them so far.
Kinder and Gentler?
If you don't consider a woman's right to GOVERN her OWN body.
If you don't consider a gay or lesbian being discriminated in HOUSING and EMPLOYMENT.
Kinder and gentler MIGRATION from Utah by your LGBT and progressive youths in STAGGERING numbers, taking with them Utah's future.
Angry Mark?
Did no one explain to Buttars and Monson that a TOTALITARION STATE needs a great wall or fence surrounding it?
OTHERWISE, your most intelligent, most creative, most talented, most affluent, and most oppressed will simply LEAVE.
totalitarian...typo
I totally agree with Mark! Down with Butt ars.
Ugly comments re: Buttars and President Monson are not going to solve anything or correct Mr. Buttars comments. He cannot take his words back and sorry won't get it. Mr Buttars does not represent the Mormon Church. He is not one of the leaders. He is an individual with personal views. He too lives
under "freedom" of speech. Every individual has the right to choose how he/she lives life and manner of behavior. If you notice, Mr. Buttars has made his bed now he must lay in it. However, President Monson has made a statement concerning the marriage issue without slandering anyone. Intelligent folks
should pray for the gift of making correct decisions. Some times we need to learn to hold our
tongues. "Let sleeping dogs lie" and speak only truth.
I ask a simple question...if your relative commits
murder and you were home sound asleep, should you be punished for the crime?
