Many people do not know the difference between a nanny, an au pair, and a mother's helper.
The word "nanny" is now a catch-all word and it shouldn't be. Our family has used workers from each catagory, the actual nanny being given the highest pay. A good nanny is hard to find. You want one who is educated. I never understood why families would want to give their children into the care of someone who not only does not know the language of the hiring family but does not share the same value and morals. The best nannies are appendages of the parents.

This is a great article. In times like today, when we need to protect our children more than ever before, we need to know the proper steps in hiring childcare. A nanny agency does the work for us but not everone can afford the fees. I have looked at a lot of the companies they mentioned. There is one that was left out. I found findthebestnanny.com to be very helpful. They focus on safety in childcare employment. I felt like they were looking out for me and my kids.

Nanny schools are also great places to look (although they're pretty rare in the US), since they teach the exact skills a child care provider needs to be a great nanny. One is Alexandria School in Solon, Ohio. The students take classes like infant care, creative play, child development, healthful eating, household management and professionalism. And their placement department is an agency for all their graduates.
