So what kind of impact does miles of solar panels and millions of wind mills have on endangered species?
now go for the other stuff!!
The "Messiah" is throwing a temper tantrum. That will really help the economy.
groups will cause the USA to become a third-world country if they are not checked. It is amazing how a handful of people calling themselves a "group" can bring our country to its' knees.
And for Salazar, an unelected bureaucrat to cause so much destruction to our economy is unconscionable.
Normal people, who are the majority, need to stand up and say ENOUGH!!!
Good point. Solar panels only work when there is sun, which is less than 50% of the time. And windmills are said to work only about 35% of the time.
What are we supposed to do for our electricity at night or on a calm, cloudy day?
I believe the recoverable amount of oil is 800 Billion barrels. Good old DNews has it at only 800 barrels. We need accurate unbiased news reporting.
Salazar is single-handedly (with the help of some environmentalists) tanking the economy of a large section of Utah, Colorado and Wyoming with this decision and others he has made. Remember how just one person, Madeline Murray O'Hare, made such a difference with her atheist rantings? Well, I feel many of the so-called environmental groups are doing the same thing. I agree we need to have diversified methods of producing energy. But the solar and wind sources are not without impact, either. It takes a huge amount of space to place enough of either to produce significant amounts of energy, compared with a few acres to drill an oil well, which is then reclaimed after drilling is finished. I don't get it. Salazar is shooting us in the foot, and it affects our jobs here in the Basin. We resent that very much.
are great at finding problems, but very lacking in offering solutions.
You can find an environmental group that is opposed to every form of generating energy except natural sunlight:
Nuclear: double check, forget it
even though it is by far the most efficient and Japan has been using it safely for years to generate most of their electricity
Hydro-electric: check
dams up rivers and ruins fish habitat
Solar: check
inefficient and kills birds
Wind: check
even more inefficient, kills birds, destroys views
Coal: check, you must be kidding
acid rain
Natural gas: check
not renewable, could drive up the cost to heat homes
Ethanol and Bio-fuel: check
growing corn for fuel uses almost as much energy as it produces and creates huge dead zones in the Gulf of Mexico from the fertilizer run off
So what's left, conservation?
Start with getting all of the Hollywood elitist-types to move out of their 10,000 sq. ft. mansions and convert their property into smaller homes and condominiums. Then get them to abandon their limos and private jets and use sub-compacts and public transportation like they expect the rest of us to use.
Why aren't the people who purchased these leases suing to preserve them? If I buy a car from a dealership, and the dealership changes hands before I take delivery, my signed purchase contract can't be rescinded. Why can these lease agreements?
Blame the environmentalists for all our economic problems! Everything is their fault. Come on folks, the problems we face are much more complicated than that.
Finally. Honesty and Competence are returning to the BLM, after many years of total corruption. Who could be opposed to that?
And is Salazar re-evaluating the 11th-hour shenanigan Bill Clinton pulled when he locked up the Grand Staircase without even stepping foot in Utah? This isn't about whether these energy deals were well thought out. It's about party politics. What better way to punish a whole region for the way it votes than to take jobs away in an already desperate economy?
SUWA is so out of touch with reality. How in the world do they expect companies to answer the questions associated with oil shale development unless they are allowed to work and experiment on these research and development leases?! DUH! Stephen Bloch, you make no sense!
Contrary to statements in this article and in these posts, the latest BLM analysis for the research and development leases has been on-going since late 2005. After an extensive public process covering 2006, 2007 and ending in the fall of 2008, the EIS associated with such leases was completed. It was NOT a last-minute effort of the Bush Administration, but an effort to comply with the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which was adopted to facilitate energy development to meet our demands. True, oil shale is not viable at $35 per barrel, but it will be when oil gets back up to $100 per barrel or higher this summer! Thanks, "Salad Czar " for nothing!
Let's see if our Governor goes to bat for us on this one. Or, is he on such a roll that he doesn't want to ruffle the feathers of anyone back East?
Thank goodness we can stop the madness and make decisions in the light of day instead of like thieves in the night.
The only reason these leases were put up for sale in the first place was because Bush and his ilk were ashamed of their illegal plans.
Why do these people like basinboy (4:43pm) think the BLM was doing their job properly. We have a banking industry that fell apart and destroyed our economy with the same type of "bush" league oversight. That is why these decisions cannot be trusted.
We now have a chance to work on oil shale while gas is cheep. We will be paying $ 4.00 plus before long and still we will not have touched the oil shale Why do we have to all suffer for a few left wing nuts who have not even seen the area they are trying to lease. When will the majority get to do the right thing for all.
This article seemed very one-sided...I would like to here the opposing opinion so I can make a sound judgement on what is best for Utah, its economy, and its environment. As a long time resident near Canyonlands National Park, I have a vested interest on what happens to this land, but I also understand the economic benefits if done right. I want to hear the whole story.
To often we get the liberal point of view without hearing, objectively, the other sides argument. I know what the environmentalists want. This article quoted one group after another. Why can't we get objective news? Especially from a news source that leans more to the conservative side? Those who deny a liberal bias occurs in newspaper and TV are clueless.
All I want is objective news from both sides of the argument and then let me make up my own mind. Why is that so hard to understand???
I thought I heard Obama say something about us being dependent on foriegn oil?
Libs are a mentally disturbed.
How do we depend less on foreign oil? By developing our own oil, here.
Makes too much sense.
We shouldn't stop oil research just because of environmental reasons. It would be nice to have all of the alternate energy ideas in place and working before we destroy what does work. Eventually that may be a good idea but certainly not now. Keep researching all of the ideas.
