The Utah Constitution makes Polygamy illegal. Either enforce and punish those practicing it or change the Constitution. What is happening now makes a joke of the law.

THIS IS A MORE SUBTLE WAR OF ATTRITION.

ER

There is abuse in Polygamy as there is abuse in Monogamy; both should be prosecuted. But while I would never enjoin that practice myself (What is the punishment for having two wives? Having two wives!) but I will not decry it on the basis that it does not conform to the way I do things. I find a woman having 5 kids out of wedlock with five different men with none of the men fulfilling their responsibility to the children much more an abomination than if a polygamist family is a tight loving family (without abuse). If many people want to redefine marriage to include a same sex couple then why should a non-abusive polygamist family be wrong?

More appropriate

This a far more appropriate way to handle than the writing books and spreading hate that very well known and trusted ex polygamist is doing. And I agree with ER. Abuse is in every kind of family, and isn't exclusive to any. And if you want same sex marriage, you have no business claiming these people are less than you and don't deserve.

Polygmy is God's gift to man. It is a better way of life for those choosen to live it. Polygmy like monogmy can be a wonderful way of life or it can be less than good, it all depends on the people. But, one thing is for sure, and that is there is nothing wrong with polygmy for those able to live it and there shouldn't be laws or opposition to its practice.

Its funny because if someone read this title to you the you would think either "non prophet, which is what should happen lol or nonprofit" Its kinda funny.....

This is really rich

Shurtleff says he desn't have the resources to prosecute polygamists.

TRANSALATION: I can not prosecute polygamists unless I want to prosecute everyone who co-habitates with others that they are not married to.

It's a no brainer. Polygamists can not be prosecuted for sleeping with more than one woman becuase only the first marriage is legit, the others are merely spiritual unions not reconized by anyone to be a REAL MARRIAGE. Hence why he can not tough them for that. Now for child rape and abuse oh yes he can and he will prosucte- for which I commend him.

From Missouri

Major Ditto's to ER. I agree 100%. What is wrong with a man having more than one wife. It is the weirdos that give pologamy a bad name. There are so many people out there living in illegal relationships. If the gays want to be recognized than why not pologamy? There are so many abuses in regular families. There are many good pologamy families.

re-ER

Or why not have two husbands for that matter.

Anonymous

Legalize it but make the participants be over 21. Make the "father" be able to provide for his families and if there is welfare fraud, put all of the adults in jail and let the kids be adopted out.

Cosmo

Repeal the law against plural marriage.

Have the minimum age for monogamous marriage at 18.

Have the minimum age for plural marriage at 25.

Corruption

Only in UTAH..the loose goose and the loose gander. Who needs morals in Utah?-------------ABSOLUTELY NOBODY!

The Piggery State

WOW!!!-Utah could certainly use some more piggeries. What a wonderful legacy. Oh, yeah, thin out the male population while your at it- less men more women.

A minor observation

Funny how so much opinion is posted by those who do not even correctly spell polygamy.

John Charity Spring

This issue is not just about polygamy. ER is absolutely correct that a woman who has multiple children, each from a different man who does nothing to support the child, is a complete abomination. This is a result of modern media's emphasis on immediate self-gratification without regard to the consequences. This sort of behavior is ruining this Country.

Shurtleff shrugged

Seems like the Shurtleff motif, advanced by his Chief Deputy Murphy, is to embrace lawbreakers and utterly abandon the constitution of this pretty, great state. I get it, polygamy gets him more headlines and that is the primary driving force in his administration. But couldn't he get headlines by going after those who swindle Utah citizens? I know, some (most) of them hold leadership in that church that doesn't embrace polygamy, so no headlines and no black tie events for him there.

your kiddin me

So how many polygamists support their children when the mother has left the husband, or God forbid gotten a divorce? The truth is just as many exwives of polygamists as monogomists who leave or divorce their husbands, DONT get financial support from the Husband. I will tell you who supports them! WE DO! The taxpayers with welfare, food stamps, and any other handouts they have to get.

Willard

I commend Shurtliff and others who are reaching out to help these people in desperate need. For many years, there was not a way out of the poygamyous communities. Women had many children and no means of support if they left the community. Some tried to leave and were not sucessful. When they came back, since they had no place to go, they and their children were often treated worse than before. I have great sympathy for those who had to drink Warren Jeff's cool aid. He is wicked and mentally ill at the same time. Those old "too Close" genes do funny things to people. Please help this cause, and others like it, such as "Lost Boy's."
