Glad to have an executive at the head of these companies, particularly the Deseret News, who has had actual experience in managing a newspaper.
Mark it a terrific guy and he will do great things for the Des News. Good luck Mark.
I think that he will do a fantastic job as well. He has been a great executive, and admired man in his accomplishments, charitable, and a great mission President!
Mr. Willes's experience as a CEO is undoubted. His success as a CEO is somewhat more spotty. He was never a good fit at the LA Times and did little or nothing to make it a better paper.
He is a good man and the Church has great confidence in him. That may be enough to help him be more successful in this current position than he was in his last jobs.
"He was never a good fit at the LA Times and did little or nothing to make it a better paper." Not sure what you base this on other than some of the nonsense that's been published. Running DMC is similar to running Times Mirror (LA Times parent Company) which Mark did very successfully (just ask Wall Street and the thousands of people that made a fortune on the stock price during his tenure). A few controversial decisions regarding a single operating division (LA Times) does not paint the entire picture. Not sure who you are but you seem pretty confident in your opinion for someone who, to me, is amazingly uninformed!
This guy has caused major layoffs and controversy everywhere he has gone. I know I switch from reading LA times to reading Washington Post after showed up at LA times. Why would the church appoint him to another such promonent position, were he can yet again reek havoc?
"The Internet contains 'a lot of misinformation (that) gets taken for fact.'" Well, hopefully that doesn't apply to the online version of the Deseret News, so I don't catch Wille's point as to the online edition versus the printed edition.
"major layoffs" & "I know I switch from reading the LA times to reading Washington Post after showed up at LA times." Once again another uninformed comment! Do you honestly think the Washington Post has not had layoffs during the past 10 - 15 years?? Besides, please quantify "major" for me? The reality is the numbers were incredibly small from a % stand point. I might also add that your english is terrible so my guess is you've actually never read either paper!
He was obviously not referring to the online edition of The Deseret News but rather to all the other misinformation that can be found on the internet from so-called credible sources. To locate any of these non-credible sources I would ask that you follow-up with "????" and "Why".
