I'm as politiaclly conservative as the next guy, but this is just another example as to why the overwhelming political majority in Utah is not healthy. Without any checks and balances, we are on a collision course with disaster and zealots are driving the bus.

Reality Check

I completely agree with Tuffy. The article says "rather than eat a piece of humble pie", I think this is ridiculous that one should even suggest he apologize to local politicians. I believe this man has shown more integrity and character for standing his ground and defending his wife. I would recommend he search for a position outside of Utah where he can be respected for his actions and successes rather than having to make nice with the incestuous politics of Utah county. The last time I checked, UVU was a State owned educational institution. Local politicians should be grateful the school is even there.

Just Asking

Let's see, Dr. Hill enters a political race as a spokesman for his wife's campaign, hammers the incumbent and his party, their campaign insinuates unethical behavior (of course without evidenc3), and then he complains that the environment he is in is political? Is this "I'm a victim" mentality really the "right stuff" for a University President applicant to demonstrate?

Dixie Dan

You are dealing with a mentality where reason does not apply. Utah County would still vote for George W. Bush if they could.

flatlander

only in Chicago and in Utah do politics come before ability.

I have known Ned for over thirty years. He is one of the finest men I have ever met, and, though I am sure UVU will find a good person to fill the presidents seat, it is a loss to Utah that Ned will not do it. It is also a shame to watch relatively few people in Utah County care about what some of our political leaders do to stay in power. They maintain the Republican name for votes, but their corrupt values and lack of integrity do not reflect the leadership we deserve.

too bad

Ned Hill is a great man. It's not surprising he wouldn't go along with what is being insinuated- too much integrity.

At least we can feel safe knowing that whoever they do get will be in bed with all our favorite Utah County Repubs!

Shame on the Regent and legislator who said this apology was needed. Let Ned Hill rise or fall on his own merits (which are considerable), and if there's typical Utah County Republican reindeer games afoot, I'd just assume not know about it. It just causes indigestion.

And now I feel bad for whoever gets the job, and hope for their sakes that their qualifications are far superior to Mr. Hill's, which I find hard to inagine.

2 party system

Utah County Republicans ---this would be the same group that attacked Bill Orton (Democrat) years ago about his lack of family values simply because the guy was not married. The old school Republican Party has a serious problem in trying to impose their will on the public. I, like Mrs. Hill believe that so long as our legislative bodies are ruled by a dominant party, there will be no reasonable discussion or consideration of different points of view.

irondori

UVU is cutting off it's nose to spite it's face in refusing Dr. Hill. Period.

Surprised?

Should we be surprised? It was just this past year that the Dixie State President resigned. Later everyone comes to find out it was because he was forced to by the board of regents. Anyone that comes across as progressive in anyway are not on favored by the board of regents.

Bob Lonsberry skewered him this morning on his show and Bob was completely wrong. He judged him with very little facts or personal knowledge about Dr. Hill, who is as good a person as there can be. Bob also criticized Dr. Hills statement that he could have done it and I would have done it well." What gives? That is exactly what any of the competent people in Atlas Shrugged would have said. Why is ability and awareness of ones competence being degraded by a conservative?

Immature politicians should not be catered to. There is no reason to apologize, so Dr. Hill shouldnt. The worst guilt is to accept an unearned guilt.

Bob I think its time YOU eat some humble pie and apologize for that juvenile tirade.

Ned Hill is Amazing

I was a student at the Marriott School and I have had the privilege of meeting Ned and his wife on a few occasions and I have to say that they are among the most amazing people I've ever met. It is a shame that UVU will lose out on such a remarkable leader because of some stupid politician that got his feelings hurt a long time ago. UVU should have begged for Ned's services.

Big J

The suggestion that Ned Hill would refuse to "eat a slice of humble pie" over a political "squabble" will surely be a shock to anyone who has known him as dean of BYU's Marriott School for the last 10 years. His success as dean is largely due to his willingness to eat much more than his share of humble pie. While the school has risen impressively to the top of national rankings, completed a significant building expansion, and increased its endowment by $100 million, Dr. Hill is the last person to take credit for the school's achievements. Instead, he lauds the students, faculty, staff, donors, alumni, and the school's mission and values. Rather than believing that this man of integrity has suddenly taken up small-minded political maneuvering, please consider the possibility that his withdrawal from the UVU presidential search was simply the right thing to do -- even with a hefty dose of humble pie.

An honest man

Dr. Hill is a man of integrity and honor. I have known him for many years and there is not a dishonest bone in his body. I feel badly for UVU as they are truely missing out on getting the best man for the job.

Doesn't Get It

Ned Hill has been insulated at a church owned school for far too long. He just doesn't get it. As a president of a state university, he would spend hundreds of hours on capital hill each legislative session asking law makers to prioritze his funding requests. Someone was trying to do Ned a huge favor by telling him that there were some bridges to mend. If Ned had been appointed as UVU President only to find that the legislators from his own county would not go to battle for him, he would have been doomed to failure.

An apology IS in order here: the Board of Regents and the Utah County Republicans owe an apology to Dr. Hill.

Which foot is that shoe on??

Those liberal progressives, who can't stand that conservatives have the abundant support of voters, have no problem with the fact that Obama, Pelosi and Reid own Washington and have our lives in their hands to crush us at will. They will ram the "stimulus" liberal pork chops down our throats, like it or not. Watch the "fairness doctrine" be introduced. One party rule, bad??? Depends on which foot the shoe is on. Right?

Suck up to the legislature

or be dismissed as a liberal? Is this a joke? How small minded can people be?

Perhaps the legislature should remember that people who have have actually achieved something of consequence during their lives deserve to be treated with respect.

The fact that UVU may fear the political retaliation of the loser legislature tells us more about the legislature than about UVU or Ned Hill.

Apparently the Utah Valley delegation cannot be counted upon to do what's best for the county without being paid off, literally or figuratively.

How do you spell corruption?

This has nothing to do with party affiliation or Rush "I-fear-the-fairness-doctrine" Limbaugh's elitist demagoguery. It's about unchecked political power turning into legislative tyranny. Wake up or regret it.

Oh my heck!

Let me get this straight? Bob Lonsberry skewered Ned Hill. Wow, I bet that makes Hill want to renounce the fact that he raised 100 million plus dollars for the Marriott School while he was the Dean. In fact the University will probably close down the new building that Ned raised the funds to build. If Lonsberry isn't on his side I'll bet Cornell University will want to withdraw his Ph.D. in finance. I mean Cornell now has a "world class" thought leader it must worry about offending.

What was Hill's sin? He supported his wife in an election campaign and during that campaign questions were asked about ethics in the Utah Legislature. Questions that virtually every person in Utah would like answered, but apparently anyone who asks any questions about legislative behavior must remember that only fools will tell the King he is naked. After all unlike the rest of us the members of Utah Legislature are perfect!

Utah Legislature

The political involvement of Hill's wife should have nothing to do with his bid to be President of UVU since they aren't the same person. To suggest that Hill has anything to apologize for because his wife chose to run for the State Legislature as a Democrat is disgusting. Hill's political affiliation should have nothing to do with his bid to be UVU President and his wife's affiliation may or may not be the same as his but it definitely has nothing to do with Hill.
