Impressed with Coach Whittingham.... I think he has many attributes of LaVell Edwards, and of course his dad.
I was pleased that the Utes did well in the Sugar Bowl, that they represented the State of Utah and the MWC well, and that Coach Whittingham (unlike Urban), keeps the rivalry respectful.
Go Cougs!
What a truly classy coach, father, and husband. Thanks Coach Whitt for winning with class and doing our school and state proud.
Doug is a good writer and Kyle a good coach. Two goods like that equal a great story in my opinion.
Great article on Coach Whittingham, his family and his approach to a difficult job.
The Utes football team is a reflection of this good man in the players discipline and approach to the game. Utah is very fortunate to have a coach of this character to head its program. Kyle's attitude, discipline, and character will be manefested on the field among his players for many seasons to come. I am proud to be an alum and would feel fortunate, indeed, to have one of my sons, or grandsons, play for this man. GO UTES!
BYU fan and graduate and that was a great article to read. THanks!!
Kyle is a wonderful example of a True Ute.
Well, it isn't hard to be impressed with Kyle. Nice article. I love Bronco too, they both have found their niche and are doing a spectacular job. Go Cougs!
In 1984 Kyle was an assistant high school coach at Timpview. He was a class act then, and he's a class act now.
Lucky for Ute fans, that Al Davis didn't offer Kyle the Head Coach position for the Raiduhs.
I love the old 80's pics...those were some nasty uniforms back then!! And I couldn't help but notice the caption on one of the pictures read "Kyle Whillingham."
After reading this article, I wish we could trade coaches. He is a real class act.
Kyle will admit he got most of his coaching style from his mentor Lavell Edwards while he was a COUG at BYU. Yes, the attributes of BYU has rubbed off on a most impressive husband, father and spectaular coach.
Hum, how can the UTES fault this?
Great story. Well done by the writer and well done by Whittingham to let the D-News get to interview him for that long. Much better than your typical run of the meal sports article. Great job.
Kyle is the perfect example of a strong, high-profile LDS member leading purely by example. It is interesting that Coach Whit and many of his players regularly do firesides like Mendenhall and the Cougars and he is a temple attending member - but he speaks and comes across as a normal person. I think in the end, this may draw more to the Church than others who have to talk about the Church in what seems to be every comment (Bronco, Collie, etc). There is a realness about Whit that at times seems to be missing in the Cougs.
I was sorry to lose Kyle to Utah, he's BYU family. But it's worked out well, both teams have great coaches. Must be tough on those anti-Mormon, anti-BYU ute fans to have an active LDS/BYU player for a Head Coach, several LDS/BYU assistants and over 50 returned missionary players! People really ought to wise up and realize there is very little difference in Utah and BYU. Rivalry is great but the nastiness is inappropriate.
Like many successful men, he's got a great wife. This article is a fine piece of writing. Kyle is more than just a football coach. He's a wonderful example to his players, the school and everyone in Utah. Us BYU fans are very proud of him, although we do hate to lose to the utes. We'll get them this year!
Coach Whit is da MAN! The Utes' success last year wasn't by accident - Whit deserves every accolade he's gotten. GO UTES!
Thou almost persuadest me to be a Ute fan. I guess now I can get over that Wyoming mistake and move on with life. Go Kyle and Go Cougars!
I remember Kyle's father Fred quite well. I have thought many times how proud he must be of Kyle and how he has dealt with good times and bad times. Fred was a great defensive coach and really deserves a great deal of credit for BYU's success. I also remember Doug Scovil who most BYU fans have never heard of but who really built the offense that BYU lived off of for so many years. I was very pleased four years ago when Kyle decided to stay with Utah and chose to look to the future rather than trying to recreate the past.
