this is an important ruling.
prior to this, they could charge you about 7 cents per kilowatt hour, but only pay you 1 cent per kilowatt hour for excess energy you provided back to the grid from your renewable resource.
this will make a big difference in the proliferation of solar, wind, waste-heat, and even small hydro development.
it's about time
This is a great way to start adding new jobs to Utah and put more people back to work in all sectors of the state. This will help the solar industry in Utah grow and become one of the new players of energy in the state. Thanks for all of the people that testified at the PSC meetings.
If Rocky Mountain Power charges customers $.07/kWhour that means that it costs them less than $.07 to produce it. How is it moral to force them to pay $.07 to purchase a kWhour from some bozo with a solar panel when they can create their own kWhour for less than that?
This is immoral.
Why immoral? It doesn't cost RMP anything if somebody produces power. Those producing the power have to pay for the equipment they use and their connection to the grid. The price is passed straight through to the end consumer. RMP does the billing anyway so where's the cost to them? Paying anything less than dollar-for-dollar value would be immoral. Besides, you know RMP will raise their rates to offset this potential (albeit small) loss to their revenue. That'll be immoral too.
As a Private Home producing My Own power I can reduce my bill to close to $0.00 as Possible and if the power goes out in the daytime I STILL HAVE POWER. The cost IS HIGH to put this in; and RMP don't maintain it, pay for it, they just USE IT. With this change I actually might eventually pay for my investment before the HIGH COST maintenance is Required in 15 years.
