I like these ideas.
How about a $20 co-pay, like the rest of us pay? Then let's pay prisoner's a market wage for their work in prison, minus costs for their "rent" and food.
I would love to see a person exit prison with $1,500 in their pocket so they could return to normal life. They would spend their time in prison learning to be part of the normal job market and economy.
I've always thought it ridiculous that they can get the education they do while we foot the bill. Half of them use it to research laws and find ways to claim "unfair trial" because they have done their "research" and they just know that they weren't treated right by the courts by the time they are done.
I feel for those wrongly accused - but that is such an incredibly small percentage. The rest of them get way too many luxuries! I know a guy in there who had dropped out in the middle of 9th grade (true story) and yet he graduated from high school in about 3 months. Makes no sense at all!! Then started into "college". (Yes - I hope he rots in there!) Educate them - definetly! But at THEIR expense!!
Yes, we should "definetly" educate them. Maybe some of the posters on Deseret News also.
Its hard enough for us when we get out to find work. Everyone needs schooling to make it out here. I know I sure do wish I would of made a change in my life yrs ago but I am a better person today but need more schooling.
I agree with "Economics". Put them to work. Let them cover the costs of their own incarceration, repay any fines or assessments from the court. Education and training are fine too if they are applying it to their work, which should be the priority.
Prison never was meant to be a reward.
Think about this everyone. Those who are in prison and can't get a job in there because of their legal status, are they supposed to be denied treatment because they cannot pay? And of those same people money will be lost because they will end up being deported. It's a 'lose lose' situation.
