Lincoln also said that Mormons are like tree stumps in a field, just let them be and plow around them.

The real nemsis of Joseph Smith was Stephen Douglas
of the famed Lincoln Douglass debates. He continued to hound the Mormons until the day he died.

Amazing how many aspects of Americana the Mormons seemed to touch.

Polygamy was (and is) a form of cultish slavery. Lincoln certainly was against it.

Justin, Please read the book "How Wide the The Divide". An Evangelical, Professor Bloomberg freely admits that Mormons are not a cult. Now, stop with the silly name calling be a good little boy.

Little known is that Lincoln had many relatives in the church. My Gr-g-g Grandfather,Ebenezer Hanks-Founder of Hanksvlle,Utah also helped start San Bernardino Ca.,Cedar City and Parawan Utah plus many other southern Utah cities and towns, also was Mayor of Provo Utah, was a cousin of Abraham Lincoln whose mother was Mary Hanks. Also if you go back in the Hanks line you will find Rev. John Lathrop who is a common ancester to many Church and U.S. Presidents including Joseph Smith,Brigham Young,Abraham Lincoln of course,George Bush and most importantly,ME,Michael Skewes. So there is your history lesson for today.Any questions feel free to ask.

Wow Justin, I agree with you that polygamy was nothing more than a cultish horrible thing. I am sure those cultish slavery-loving beasts like Abraham, Jacob and other Biblical polygamists are rotting in hell! With tongue firmly in cheek I can't help but smile at your pathetic ignorance and bigotry.

I recently read Joseph Smith's presidentail tract published in 1844, the year of his death. I was surprised and impressed how much conquering slavery was a focus of his goal as a national candidate.

That was in the 1840s in Illinois.

I happen to think that this tract and similar ideas may have influenced Abe Lincoln a great deal. Abe was born in 1809 and Smith in 1805.

I happen to believe that Joseph Smith, Jr. was an inspired man called by God. Perhaps Lincoln was another person that was profoundly affected by him.

We all know that Lincoln was an unpopular figure that greatly influenced our nation, who waged a war that killled more Americans than any other before or since. Joseph was a military commander, feared by many. The South knew that Lincoln would mean trouble for them, they seceded because they felt directly threatened by President-elect Lincoln.

I am fascinated by the shared history of these two men and the rest of the American drama.

Two martyrs who were champions of freedom. And perhaps they shared more in common than usually believed.

Lincoln introduced a bill on Jan 10, 1849 to get rid of slavery in the District of Columbia. If he had been president instead of Polk, Texas would never have been annexed to the Union. There would have been no war with Mexico, no California, no SW, no land from sea to shining sea! It was because of slavery in Texas!

Lincoln and his Republican/Abolitionist Party wanted to abolish slavery and thus divided the nation. Then he started the Civil War which killed 500,000 whites and destroyed the South. AND HE IS PRAISED AS BEST PRESIDENT

Slavery is not a sin. God had laws regulating it. Paul told slaves not to care if they are called as slaves. But if they could make THEMSELVES free, they should. The onus is on the slave to free himself, NOT A WAR. I Cor. 7:14.

The principle: Israelites were to be the head. Gentiles the tail. We are an Anglo-Saxon, Israelite nation. But we are great sinners so the curse on us is the tail becoming the head and the head becoming the tail. Thus BO.

Michael Skewes, Inasmuch as you are very intrigued with the family history of the Lincoln-Hanks et al lineages, try delving into this: There has been a commendable case for Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis being step-brothers! Look at their pictures, especially profiles, and consider their origins and dates of life. St.George historian Bart Anderson ran such a story in the local St.George Spectrum several years ago.

Jake

No man is perfect, Smith, Lincoln or otherwise. But what a remarkable comparsion and fascinating study to read about the two. I'm intrigued by this novel. The author does happen to be my uncle, but it's my understanding that the novel is more of a study of these two fascinating men and not a political debate of hotly contested issues such as polygamy.

Brian

Harold and others,

Need I remind you that the Civil War was NOT started by Lincoln, but by soldiers firing on Fort Sumter? The issue thast started the war was not slavery, but States' Rights. Slavery entered into the fray after Gettysburg and the Emancipation Proclamation in the MIDDLE of the Civil War! Read some history books!

Lincoln did the best he could to hold this country together during one of our darkest periods as a nation. So yes, I believe he was one of the great leaders this nation has ever had.

Kathy

Um...John R Clark - I have no clue whether or not Lincoln & Davis were step-brothers, but even if they were, there would be no physical resemblance between them. Step-siblings are individuals unrelated to each other. Their only relation is that their parents got married.

Patty

Abraham Lincoln was friends with Jonathan Browning when he was living in Nauvoo. He spent the night with them on at least two occasions. You can read about this in Jonathan's son John Moses Browning's autobiography.

To Harold Reiman: Did you realize that some NUTCASE is writing blogs and posting them under your name?

Re: ajarizona

Actually Joseph Smith ans Stephen Douglas were friends,

and at that time, Stephen Douglas was a very great man.

Joseph Smith prophesied that if Douglas did not turn his back on the mormons, he would become president.

Unfortunately, Douglas did, he stopped being friend with the mormons, he did not become president, and did not have a very good life after that.

Just some interesting triva.

Harold Reimann

I was not temporarily insane when I made my comments. I showed you that Lincoln was against slavery in 1849! The South said it would secede if the new Republican Party, which was abolitionist, won the election. Abolitionists and Lincoln divided the country over slavery! Then when the South wanted what was theirs, Ft. Sumter, Lincoln wouldn't give it to them. So they took it. It was their land! Would a war have started if Lincoln had given them Ft. Sumter? NO! Then Lincoln, who divided the Union, said he was going to save the Union and attacked the South. Do you see the BS?

Harold Reimann - You seem so caustic. I feel sorry for you. Do you ever have a happy moment in your life?
Did anyone see "Looking for Lincoln" on PBS the other night? Very informative. According to the research on this program by Henry Louise Gates, Jr., Lincoln was not the abolitionist African Americans had hoped, but he "did the right thing" by freeing the Southern slaves. It was a fascinating program and discussion of the "real" Abraham Lincoln. There was no talk of the Mormons, as I recall, but a great program.

It has been very intersesting to read your comments and ponder your thoughts and feelings. I wonder if some of you are more worried about how smart you look than whether you are sharing knowledge or learning something yourself. Isn't that what these kinds of conversations should really be about, learning and sharing? I think the real question here should be whether these men knew our beloved Savior, Jesus Christ. For me, I believe they did. To have the integrity, fortitude, courage and strength to accomplish the things which brought us our freedoms and rights, they must have all known Him. They were in the work of righteousness. In knowing Him they knew each other, for they were in the same fight and we can know them all if we join the fight for right. May we all learn to fight this fight together that has been fought for so long by so many good men and women of all persuasions.

Dear Southerners, THE CIVIL WAR IS OVER!

The ongoing theme of the Bible is the freeing of the slaves, from Exodus to the crucifixion. If you are a Mormon, you believe it started before the creation. The Word of God is the first thing to go when nations are sold down the river, and the first thing people turn to when rising to claim their freedom. Tyrants know it. This is why they will employ any means to remove it from the hands of the people. How long and how deeply has it been deleted from public consciousness? How many generations have been deprived of its light in their education? The Reformers knew its impact. They died to translate it into the language of the people. The founders of this nation knew it and referred to and applied its principles more than any other source.

Any pharoahs out there? Play magic tricks at your own risk.Let the people go, or expect there will be plagues, like being on the losing end of a war, or financial disasters, etc. In case you missed the point, the slaves could not and did not free themselves. The battle is the Lord's.
