I love the previous comment, I 100% agree with the above person's comment, very
Besides having to do time, my friend is forever going to be seen as a sex
offender because he forgot to ask for I.D. from a 16 year old promiscuous girl,
who, by the way, was already a teenage mother. She also testified that it was
consensual. So I totally agree that some of our laws and officials should be
re-evaluated,especially the public defenders who just want to make a quick $500
dollars by convincing their clients to plead guilty by promising little jail
time and a few years of probation. I agree with s.c, don't be to quick to judge.
untill it's your family member who is in there for 8 years don't be so quick to
My fiances Now ex husband RAPED HER daughter and beat the other kids DCFS
Theatened her with arrest every time she tried to turn him in for the abuse,so
for you people to say that these people are wronged in this is insane. Here in
vernal,ut. DCFS stands for (Department of Child and Family Separations)if you
look you will find that they have a website for caseworkers only that has photos
of children and I quote "Not Yet Taken" these prisoners are one thing and some
of them never deserve to see light again in there lives but another problem BIG
problem is these idiots with badges that play at being legal and legit but use
the law to thier own means these are the ones that are worse than every other
criminal out there they are right up there with child abusers and sex offenders
The truth is we are spending to much money on those in jail. Period. It's not
supposed to be a hotel, it's prison. So whats the point of spending so many of
our tax dollars for jailbirds when there are better things in this country to be
spending it on right now. I also wonder why some get special treatment and why
more of the petty criminals can't just be put on house arrest. And in case you
didnt know, taxpayers pay approximately 19,000 dollars a year for EVERY inmate
for things such as enjoyment (weight facilities), to medical bills. I believe
the money should be coming out of their pockets just like it comes out of mine
when I go to the doctor or to the gym.
You all talk of locking criminals up, but you have no idea what hard time does
to someone who just needs help. that is why we call it CORRECTIONS not
WAREHOUSING!! There are those in there that want to change - they should be
going through the system and releasing those indivuals into programs. There are
some that will not change and they need to stay, but there are alot that do and
funding to help them change is being cut. This needs to be addressed because if
it is not, we are all in big trouble. It think the answer is much shorter
sentences(much less cost) and more programs and therapy. This way we get people
the help they need to change so that when they do get out, we won't have to lock
ourselves and our children in the house. someone who truly is working and wants
to change only needs about 1.5-2 years to do it. Lets get back to correcting and
out of the stone age of just bread water and through away the key. They are
people too, just need more help than the rest of us.
I think that the state should look at each casein question, alot of
inmates are being held in lew of restitution. So we the tax payer are
spending 46,ooo dollars a year to keep pepole in prison whoowe money
to the state. Make perfect sense to me
SOME OF YOU PEOPLE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOUR SELVES.DEATH PENALTY?BREAD
WATER? TENTS.?CONVICTS ARENT JUST A NUMBER ALSO ON THAT NOTE THEY ARE
STiLL HUMAN AND SOME DECENT HUMANS MAKE MISTAKES..YOU TALK AS iF THEY ARE
ANIMALS.;BEFORE YOU GO POINTING FINGERS MAKE SURE YOUR HANDS ARE CLEAN;MY HUSBAND IS AT USP. FOR A NON VIOLENT CRIME.AND HE HAS LEARNED HIS
LEASON WITH OUT THE NEED OF 'BREAD AND WATER'.GRANTED THAT JUST RELEASING
CONVICTS. WILL NO DOUBT BE A HORRIBLE MISTAKE . BUT WHAT OTHER RATIONAL/MORAL
CLAUSE DO WE HAVE?'THE DEATH PENALTY' 'IRAQ'PEOPLE GET A GRIP.
Is not always right. Some of the $$$ he is saving, is being spent on some costly
lawsuits....... Ever heard of the ACLU???
I do not support letting illegal immigrants break the law. My comment on the
other story was not meant to support illegal activity, it was meant to encourage
a respectful dialog on the issue.
If you've got to do it release non-violent offenders only.
Maybe there should be more focus on those who are about to be released, provided
them resources so they are productive once they are released back into society.
I bet there are more then a few that are repeat offenders.
Most have it right. Arizona Sheriff has it right. Put them in Quonset huts on
the south west desert near St.George Area where it is warmer. I lived that way
in WW2 Navy and got along fine on spam and beans, why cant they do the same.
Find cheaper ways to house them. Government spends way too much money, WAY TOO
MUCH MONEY ON PRISONS AND PRISONERS, HEAR ME FOLKS, WAY TO MUCH MONEY IS BEING
SPENT ON PRISONS AND PRISONERS. dO NOT RELEASE THEM EARLY, SPEND LESS AND KEEP
EM TO SERVE THEIR TIME. WHY CANT WE GET THE POINT ACROSS TO OUR
go to a 12 bed system, when # 13 goes in #12 gets fatal shot. we would never
have more than 12 inmates. ever again.
IF WE .... | 7:09 a.m I like death is the ultimate conservative solution to
crime and poverty. We can't feed you, house you are provide basic medical care.
What is the silent solution?
Whiggy, weren't you the one defending illegal immigrants in your posting on
another story? Don't you think that a disproportionate amount of forgery and
theft in this country is committed by those entering illegally? Or else how
could they get a drivers license, or proper employment? I wonder how much jail
space is occupied by Mexican nationals.I'd be curious to see what
the real problem is with "overcrowding". Why not just fit more to a room, or
have another row of bunks? Heavens forbid that these inmates' acccommadations
are less spacious.
Hey "Whiggy", & "John Charity Spring":There is this thing on your computer
called a "Spell Check". Try using it!
It is not better to let forgers, theifs, and other "property crimes" defendants
out of prison. These people cause a tremendous amount of damage to people's
lives. A minor stab wound heals much faster than identity theft does.
If you treat them like animals... guess what? That's exactly what they'll
become. Of course prison is a punishment, but how far are we willing to go to
"punish"?... I'm already starting to hear the de-humanizing of convicted
criminals. Some of the posts read: "let the inmates sleep in cots"... "put them
in tents"... "ration them with bread and water"... "implement the death penalty
more liberally"... Look, times are tough. And when times get hard our first
instinct is to lash out. But please people, let's not lose our civility. In the
end, that may be all we can take with us.
We are slip sliding away.....
Can't afford to house and feed them - don't want to release them back out into
society...Looks like the death penalty should be implemented a little more
liberally to help offset the overcrowding in Utah.
Given that people are in lockup for writing bad checks, using small amounts of
drugs, or in other words for crimes which they could just as well be on home
confinement, using a gps monitor instead, why not let a lot of them go, the non
violent ones, put them on home confinement? It would be better for them and it
would be better for us.
We in Utah are being duped. At the very same time we are housing over a thousand
inmates for ICE and deportees for federal government, our esteemed prison system
wants to turn loose convicted criminals. What should be done is that the federal
prisoners be put in a detention camp surround by fences in tents and keep the
criminals in jail. The jail should not be allowed to overturn convictions by
trial. It is ahborant that our jail system allows this, we spend thousands of
dollars to convict criminals then the jails just turn them loose on the public.
If any thing is done, send the federal prisoners to federal prisons to house.
Then cut the ammenities to bread and water and hard time as prescribed by law.
Criminals rights are restricted to obeying prison rules and constituional laws
are in abeyance until time is served. The prisons have no right to overturn our
justice system to suit their failings.
If territalks ran this State, criminals would be allowed to raom at large. We
cannot allow these new fangled notions of loving everybody no matter how much
they harm society to override goog old fashioned punishment of criminals.
Send them to Iraq to finsh there sentence. 3 year dudy. Maybe when the come back
the will have more respect for life...
Sheriff Joe let's his inmates sleep on cots...maybe they would think twice if
they knew they were going to be camping out for the winter in SLC.
Why don't we just put them in tents like they do in Az. Works out great for
Buy some cots and give 'em another roommate. I get tired of hearing that the
only choices we have are either to spend more or "let prisoners go free and take
away the education of our children." Cut administration costs and cut any perks
that prisoners get. Give the prisoners cheaper food, take away their cable TV,
and pack 'em in a little tighter. It's a prison, not a hotel.
what x-actly is the goverment protecting us from in these cases? i don't know
what the # s are in this state but many of the prison population consists of
crimes that hurt nobody x cept the person incarcerated such as marijuana further
there are many crimes that were nonviolent such as hot checks etc.why don't we
have a system for these type of crimes in whichj the responsible parties must
support there own selves while being punished.they are not a threat to society
and why should the tax payers suport them? we also should change some laws as to
what you go to prison for.yes you are going to see an increase in crime because
the people being released must also support themselves and with all the layoffs
already taking effect in this country how will they do that? we need to reform
the prison system in ways that will not leave the hardworking taxpayers footing
the bill!criminals won't think they are not accountable/because they don't go to
prison-prison already makes them unaccountable.[they eat sleep and play on
the taxpayers dollar GUARANTEED!]
This is absolutely shameful. The whole purpose of the government is to protect
the public. If the legislature refuses to fund the corrections system,
prisoners will be released and the crime rate will skyrocket. Criminals will
get the message that if they commit crimes, they will not be held accountable
because they will not go to prison.
