Wow, and I thought diversity in Utah meant differing preferences for Rush over Hannity or Glen Beck.
The diversity has to be held where???????????
Doesn't Utah have a neutral auditorium or building?
How about the U?
Holding this in the Tab' really sends the message doesn't it: we are in charge, we are over you, and look how you have to come here to be anything.
Next year, hold it at the U please.
I see the other side of the coin. They are all the religions JS said were wrong; he was given the tablets to restore the "true religion" and here they being part of all the wrong religions. Hummmm!
Re:"i love it", Get a life, the Tab was donated for use by one of Diverse Religions, it just happens the dominant religion of the area happens to have the proper sized structure to hold such an event! Some people just Have To Criticize? Yet the Savior still manages to help the LDS maintain a spirit of peace, and love and willingness to share! The day the "Big One" (Earth Quake) strikes this valley, you'll be glad the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is here, because the rest of the churches combined won't have the resources, or storage or ability to help that the LDS church does! Guess what, they won't leave YOU out in the cold, they'll feed and cloth and warm your sorry ?$%@!!!
"Holding this in the Tab' really sends the message doesn't it: we are in charge, we are over you, and look how you have to come here to be anything."
?!!
No it sends the message that the Mormons in Utah are one part of Utah's diversity. If you don't want to accept that diversity, what good will it do you if you go to the U? You will only watch, but you won't be changed.
Lots of people in Utah want to see diversity, they want to eat the food, look at the dances. Then go home to their 1st world homes, pat themselves on the back for being liberal. But they don't want to be changed.
The U might have changed, but that attitude was pervasive in the 80's and 90's. The Tabernacle is a better venue. Mormons accept diversity without being patronizing.

The LDS Church is a world wide church. What a fitting place to celebrate diversity.
Terrible title, "Event Celebrates Utah's Cultural Diversity." I hate hearing the common expression, "diversity makes us stronger." Diversity itself is divisive.
Wonderful article and wonderful people involved. They get it! It's finding our commonalities despite our diversity that allows us to bond and makes us strong. I would rather have seen this great article titled something like, "Utah's Culturally Diverse People Celebrate Their Commonalities." I believe folks were celebrating being part of a whole, and that is what needs to happen in this country. We need to come together like this instead of concentrating on our "diversity" and the special interests of any one "community." We need to stop this type of separation and be one bonded and respectiful whole community, like we used to be.
I would love to have been there!
Why is always the adversity. I would like to CELEBRATE my own BRITISH HERITAGE! Throw a little Celtic heritage into it for a change. We should also be proud of who we are.
Utahn diversity... Now thats one of the funniest oxymorons I have ever heard.
In the words of Steven Colbert... Not only do you guys have republicans, but you also have staunch republicans.
The next celebration in the TAB will probably be a three ring circus with a bunch of monkeys.
"Utahn diversity... Now thats one of the funniest oxymorons I have ever heard"
Sure there is lots of diversity. Have you ever heard of the Mormons? There are lots of Mormons in Utah. The Tabernacle was built by the Mormons. It is down on Temple Square. Go down there sometime. You might learn something.
Is this your first experience at being in the minority?
Utah isn't the coast, but you can't believe the linguistic diversity in Utah. You could probably go into some small rural town and find someone who speaks Japanese or Korean. Once I saw a 6 ft tall blond guy walking down the street talking to several 5 ft tall dark skinned men in Laotian or Cambodian. I have met people who speak Mangarevan, Kosraen, Quiche, Aymara, Tuamotuan in Utah. Have you ever heard of those languages?

when do we start appreciating rahter than descriminating?
When the LDS church tries to reach out..people always say they are just flexing their muscles over others. When they try to be silent..people say they only care for themselves and not a good neighbor.
This even is not unusual... last December the same inter-faith concert was held at the catholic cathedral here in downtown...you don't hear any bad comment about it...why is it that the venue so happen owned by LDS people think bad about it?
Why is it its not always good enough?
wow you actually so one white guy talking to a few not white guys in another language once, and if you go to a small town you may find one person that does not speak English as their primary language? That is a lot of diversity! (sarcasm intended)
want diversity? come to ca and find out who is at the end of the line
WOW! Great way to Break the Sabbath Day! You called it a Musical Celebration in the article. I seriously doubt the Church would EVER put on one of those Musical and Cultural celebrations held for New Temple Dedications on the Sabbath day. So why this? Come on....hold it on a Saturday Night brethren.
Please forgive "Keep the Sabbath Holy" 11:51 pm for their overly orthodox notions of proper behavior.
1. Jews and Muslims each have a "sabbath", but it is not on Sunday.
2. Singing and dancing does NOT break the sabbath and much of the music was religious in nature.
They would probably have a coronary if they found out that Mormons in old Nauvoo used to hold dances in the temple!
My kids who are 3 & 5 have a new drum set and they do wonderful unknown native music. I wondering where they got their talent?
Having two children involved in this event was a blessing. All of you who commented negatively have to think through the brain of a child for this to work 100%. My kids (3, 5, 9) saw Muslims and Jews singing together and thought it was cool. They saw the unique and interesting customs and prayers from other religions and that exposure is priceless. Who cares where it was held? You think the kids care? It's important for the adults to understand but, let's face it, this was for the children.
The music, energy and good spirit ran high. Hope to participate again and again and again.
For those who may not know, I understand that this event has grown each years since the Olympics and has been held at numerous locations. This was sponsored by the Salt Lake Interfaith Round Table, not the LDS Church. This year the LDS Church graciously hosted the gathering at its facility, for which the participants are very grateful. What a wonderful location! This was not a "Mormon" event. This was a human event. As one non-Mormon who attended, I was blown away. Yes, there is fabulous diversity in Utah.
