Yeah, I understand your frustrations with germ-paranoia and the Little Einstein crew, but I think anyone who's ever been in a crowded theme park with a toddler could appreciate the leash. Sure, holding hands and teaching them to obey is ideal, but there are places where the consequences of the child deciding to take off on his/her own could be terrible. And anyone who's been a mother for more than five minutes knows how fast the little nippers can take off when your attention is diverted only for a moment. If you've ever felt the cold panic of knowing your child is lost in a public place, you'd start thinking a leash (and possibly those locating chips that they put in cats and dogs) is a pretty great idea.

I have to disagree with you about the leash. I have 6 kids and every one of them has had to use it at one point in their life. It's not so I don't have to watch them more carfully, it's so they don't drop my hand and run off (which they do even on the leash). I was sold on them when my then 5 year old droped my hand and took off straight for a hot pot at Yellowstone park. I was never more greatful for the abilitly to stop him before I managed to catch him.

How about those silly helmets they sell for kids learning to walk? As if generations of children haven't already learned without one, and without brain damage.

I also disagree with the leash. I had a child who is extremely active and wouldn't sit down for very long at the age of 18 mos. I was stuck at the Los Angeles airport with my 18 mo old and a newborn for three hours. If I had not had that wrist leash my 18 mo old would have disappeared in an over crowded airport.

As with the other products occupying a child's time does not necessarily make a smarter child. I believe that what ever you born with is what your born with and you can enhance abilities with learning tools, but the best care is communication with your children.

I think the leash can be a good idea. If you are stuck somewhere for a long period of time you don't want to have to get up and chase your child every 2 minutes. I think this article is funny though.

I love the Baby Einstein videos! The best use I ever found for them was when I was up all night taking care of a sick 10 month old. She watched Baby Mozart and calmed down, and I got some rest because she wasn't screaming!

Haven't had to use the leash, but there have been times I wished I had one! Like the time I couldn't find my daughter in a K-Mart because she decided to hide.
