was this a game of coaching or players making plays?
Riverton is one tough team. I said it early in the season after watching them play a couple of times...I think they will be 5A state champs.
Straight to the coaches? Amazing! All sports are players making plays. Coaches prepare and adjust, but inevitably the players have to execute. This game is an example of how exciting and good Womens' basketball is in Utah. I think teams will not want to see Riverton at state, and won't be as intimidated by the toughness of Bingham. They both make you play ball. I think only American Fork, Syracuse, and possiblly T-Ville can give these two a game. Riverton might finally be the team to beat! Btw, thanks Amy for your great coverage of the women.
i have to agree with you on that i just don't see anyone beating them, they are very well coached. I can't wait until state maybe someone will give them a game. We might see a sleeper team like them titans get pass the first game and give some teams some problems. I just don't see anyone competing with riverton. American fork is so tough too. That titan does have some talent. But they won't fair against those salt lake schools.
The gap between Riverton and AF and the rest of the field (PG, T-ville, Syracuse, Bingham ect) is far too great!
Once again as in the first game the Riverton posts dominated the Bingham posts. Every attempt by Gines was basically a blocked shot by Sorensen.
Riverton was great last night. There was a lot of pressure for our kids and we kept our cool. It's fun to see how much respect we have when AF is in the stands and the whole team watching.BTW, what is the rule for a coach chasing down a ref at halftime? Can the ref give a technical during that time, or does it have to be during regulation play?
a ref can give a technical whenever. i think did the right thing by not giving one. a good ref realizes frustrations that come with coaching. personally, i think the coach had a logical argument at that point in the game. his kid was bumped into the back court and got called for over and back. riverton then hit a 3 which was a huge momentum swing going into halftime. bingham is still very good but riverton is bigger, as quick, as tough, and stronger on the boards. congrats.
I participated in the Bingham basketball program for 4 years. I have watched the following teams for the past 5 years. While Bingham may have lost both times to Riverton this season, I do not think that Riverton can now take the Miners lightly in the state tournament. I have seen the miners come back from upsets like this in the past. They will be doubly dedicated from now until the state tournament. They will watch films. They will learn how to better defend the 2 seniors off the bench. They will never give up. Miners never believe that the championship is out of their reach. Never.
Wow, where are all the Bingham fans who said the second time around was going to be WAY different, as in a win for Bingham? Looks like it was way different, this time Riverton up by 24 with two minutes left in the game. Great Defense Riverton! Way to not back down from Bingham's always aggressive play. Riverton learned from Bingham that you got to be tough to win. They're showing it now. Won't predict cause one game at a time but would love to see RHS 25-0 Utah 5A State Champs 08-09!
So Bingham lost to Riverton twice...shouldn't that move them ahead of Riverton in the rankings?
The Bingham coach has great respect for the Riverton coaching staff and players. He has told me many times how good they are and how the Riverton coach has really got their program right where it should be. Win or lose, he enjoys the battles along the way and feels it's great for women's high school basketball in the state. From what I have heard, the Riverton coach has patterned his program after the Bingham program. Looks like they have more than figured it out.
Relax. Before yesterdays game, Bingham was ranked behind Syracuse who they had beat. Both had only 1 loss. Rankings mean nothing. Is good to know that people are still jealous of us. We love it that way.
Its good to know that riverton finally changed the way the program is run.. Bingham knew how to be a successful program and always did! so you won two games against bingham... woop dee freaking doo. enjoy it while you can cause really how good will you be next year? exactly! Enjoy it while you can. Because i know for a fact that When bingham looses there good players they just reload with new one?? How long will it take riverton? :)
thats actually 4 straight wins against bingham and now 2 straight outright region titles (4 stright including ties) riverton has been as good as bingham for the past several years. as a matter of fact, riverton has been the only team to beat bingham in the regular season the past two years. the sophs and jvs beat bingham as well. looks like the future is bright for riverton.
keep in mind that Bingham's sophs and jv's beat Riverton's the 1st time around. they also rotate players on both those levels. they also don't play their best juniors in the jv game. the 2 best freshmen don't play in the soph game either. riverton is good but so is bingham
the first time bingham played riverton jv was up by almost 30 until the ref's started doing cheap calls. you can ask anyone. riverton only had 3 players left to play. where's the fairness in 3 against 5? thursday jv had ref's that actually called things and riverton won.
The Bingham Program has averaged 19+ wins a year for 20 years. Even with the opening of Copper Hills and Riverton they have maintained excellence. 4 state titles and they lost track of the region championships.
They will continue to be good and so will Riverton. But, will Riverton survive the new school as well as Bingham has? Only time will tell. When Principal Park opens the new High School. (Oquirrh Mtn. Patriots) Will he take Jill Ames as the head girls and Ron Ence as the head Boys coach? If he is smart and he is,he should make that a top priority. Many kids will follow. Riverton will still survive but they may never see a class like these girls. Riverton's group of Senior athletes are a once in a decade group that any school would love to have. Region champs in Girls Soccer, Volleyball, and now Basketball. Track will also win. All sharing the same girls. Softball could be on board also if they
didn't schedule "open gym" in another area while their classmates are in the main gym beating their top rival for the Region Championship.
