What about long term job creation? When those little pet projects are done what's next? Will those pet projects then pump revenue back to the government? Tax cuts will do so much more for the long term job creation and stabilization of the economy. Plus is there going to be better government regulation on credit? What's wrong with saving? Saving is way better than spending.
If the Whitehouse says this stimulus is going to do all these wonderful things then it must be so, right?
Who believes this garbage? Frankly same with the Republicans supposed results.
Neither group has any data to back up what they say. It is only more politics.
When will the whitehouse be releasing the details of the 10's/hundreds of billions worth of pork/ government expansion included in this legislation?
My guess is we won't be getting educated by the Whitehouse on that part of the legislation any time soon.
Why? Because the PROK and govt waste in this bill is in complete opposition to Baracks campaign promises but hey.....the campaign was over a long time ago right? Who remembers all those silly things he said only to exploit you for a vote to get himself into power.
Don't be naive people.
There is a reason why over 1/2 of Americans do not believe that this stimulus will work.
The govt is force-feeding you this garbage.
Don't buy it.
Truthfully, they would be better off dividing 900 billion by the population and mailing checks.
Its all about getting people to spend right?
This is socialism.
We don't want it.
"Stimulus could bring Utahns jobs, tax cuts, affordable college," or it could cause massive unemployment, huge tax liabilities and through-the-roof tuition costs. Just a thought.
I agree -- we don't want it. Increased government spending in this manner won't help anything that needs helping.
I don't believe any part of the HYPE story. What we need is less government NOT more goverment,
We can do better by pulling ourselves up by the bootstraps.
(and turning our heads at the unemployed, the homeless, uninsured children ...)
I agree wholeheartedly with Well, Gee. You are right on the money with this one. This so called stimulus package is worse than the first one of $750 billion that did absolutly NOTHING to help the economy. The banks did not refinance mortgages, people are still losing their homes, people are still being layed off all over the country, and cars are being repossessed, because people cannot pay their debts. If the government wants to fix these problems they need to either give the money to the citizens so they can pay off their debts and put fresh cash back into the banks, or they need to stop collecting taxes for a year or two, so people can live on their gross pay less any other deductions that they currently have. This way there is more money out there to spend and save, which will stimulate the economy.
For all those who are turning their noses up to the Stimulus. Think about the over 500K american's who have lost their jobs during 2009. I agree more long term jobs are needed but lets help those unfortunate before the highest jobless rate turns into the highest homeless rate.
Guess who got caught up in the King Obama love story? What is wrong with you? Have you ever taken an economics class? Massive quantities of debt to cover runaway spending would be the absolute worst thing that could happen to our economy! The stimulus would only happen through investment in items that would increase the GDP! GDP is the key! Cut business taxes, eliminate the capital gains tax, give credits for equipment purchases, make an EZ path and tax incentives for building of nuclear power plants, coal power plants, refineries, factories, mills, etc. Cut all spending not necessary unless it will create a long term increase in the GDP. Put E-Verify in place and make sure that those that are employed are legal! We spend billions on illegals being here every year! Allow banks an easier way to lend to businesses for expansion or production increases, keep interest rates low, keep highway construction funds in place for infrastructure improvement for improved productivity and kick everyone out of Washington DC that tries to slip in a PORK project or EARMARK for their constituents! There is no room for idiots in a recovery program! Sorry Obama, that includes you too!
The declaration tells us that we have the right to throw out the government.
Aaron is completely correct. The legislature should have planned better during the years we were having record budget surpluses. If there had been better planning and saving, we wouldn't be in this mess now.
"... The legislature should have planned..."
I don't know what universe Whitty comes from, but in mine "should have" and "ought to have" are pointless.
WE MUST GO TO WORK ON TODAY.
Whatever happened to Obama's campaign promise to tax the wealthy? Whatever happened to Obama's pledge to REDUCE the size of govt.? Whatever happened to Obama's pledge to "eliminate the pork"? If I FIRST heard of fed. employees forced to take pay cuts, or be furloughed I would have SOME confidence in him. If I heard of a tax on wealthy folks or the things THEY consume, instead of a tax on the poor buying cigarettes, I would have confidence in him. Instead, I like many others, have ALREADY lost confidence in him. The ONLY thing that will keep us out of socialism the next 3 yrs. is constantly letting our Senators know they are being watched.
"...we have the right to throw out the government."
Now that should be interesting to see.
You people are way too hung up on the old "leave our cult alone" BS and can't seem to distinguish between what was then and what was now.
Obama said tonight he'd like to get rid of all that "cable chatter" out there that is standing in the way of a clean sweep on this legislation. "We've got to think big."
These will be temporary construction jobs created that will all be gone in 2-3 years.
How is giving the unemployed more money going to stimulate them into getting jobs.
And now we'll send more underqualified kids to college to earn liberal arts degrees and become environmentalists.
. . . "500 million Americans are losing their jobs every month" -- check it out on You Tube -- hilarious. She's the Speaker of the House? And these are the people who are running our government? Wow, what a country! For sure, let's all line up and vote for this stimiulus package right now -- we're smart, just follow us.
For your prescient contribution to this article that Americans will just put tax breaks in their pocket and save it, since it's so clear to all of us little people that you're so in touch with exactly what we would do.
Either way, Obama is in trouble. If the stimulus doesn't pass, he is going to be seen as ineffective. If it does pass, it will do nothing to spur the economy. We are just now starting to see the real Obama. He actually said that if we don't pass this, we may 'never recover.' That should throw up red flags for everyone. If he and both parties would get out of the way, we'd be just fine. I pray only one term for this president.
