Future job losses in Cache Co. | 2:47 a.m. Feb. 5, 2009
Time's a commin. Don't rest on your laurels. Time's a commin.
Logan | 6:22 a.m. Feb. 5, 2009
Logan may have low unemployment but I would guess that a good majority of those jobs are extremely low paying as well.
Hello... | 7:34 a.m. Feb. 5, 2009
They are. That is one reason my husband and I commute to HAFB every day. Most jobs never see above 10 bucks an hour. Great place to raise a family. Surviving on Logan wages, not so good. Even with college degrees...

Of course Logan's #1 employer, Utah State University, will be experiencing unprecedented cutbacks for the next two years, and lay offs are imminent... and you're absolutely right about Logan having some of the lowest paying jobs on earth...

That said, USU's Space Dynamics Lab is looking to hire a new Head Researcher, so if any highly qualified PhDs wanna live in Rural Utah... there's a nice possibility there.

six bucks and hour | 8:04 a.m. Feb. 5, 2009
Logan has tons of six-dollar-an-hour jobs.

Just feel the need to ditto the comments of everyone else, Cache Valley wages are very low. It's been hard to support a family on a single income because wages are just low here, but the good news is at least the unemployment rate is low.
Impressive | 9:10 a.m. Feb. 5, 2009
So in Logan you can work yourself into the poor house! Very impressive!

I'm just curious how many of the people commenting here live in Logan? Yes, wages are lower here, but lower is better than none. It is also much cheaper to buy a home or pay rent here. Everything is close so you don't have to drive very far to get what you need so you save on transportation. And if you want to ride the bus, it is FREE.

To all the posters that are dissing Logan--you are absolutely correct. It's not where you want to live. It's cold here. Wages are low. Too many students. Lousy football team. Worst air quality in the nation. Blah, blah, blah. So do us all a favor and don't even think of moving here. You'll lower the average IQ for the area, increase unemployment, and lower our quality of life. Yes, I'm quite sure that where you are living is much better than Cache Valley.
I live here | 11:02 a.m. Feb. 5, 2009
Logan's unemployment rate is so low because everyone needs 2 jobs here, just to survive! Isn't called "Starvation valley" for nothing.

C'mon logan cheese and doritos is all you need to survive

Was in Logan last week to audit a PCB manufacturer located there. No turnover at higher level positions so they must be paying OK. Even the management that transfered from outside the state (non-LDS) said they loved Logan. We loved it and are looking forward to working with the company (they passed the audit with flying colors).
Re: Northwest Visitor | 1:04 p.m. Feb. 5, 2009
That's interesting, since the domestic production of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was banned by Congress in 1977.

Or is there another abbrevation I'm not getting here?

Logan is great. I would live in Cache Valley over anywhere between Ogden and Provo. I make well over $10/hr in a pee-on job. My husband is in more of a pee-on job and is making very close to $10 as a student. I know that's not the norm, but we also have cheaper rent here than we've ever paid anywhere else we've lived. We could actually afford to buy a home here (if my husband weren't in school and we knew we were staying here for awhile, we would). Looking at real estate anywhere else, there's no way we could buy a home. I love Cache Valley!

Logan boasts low people, too. Big whoop.
SLC and Provo | 3:11 p.m. Feb. 5, 2009
....unemployment around 3.7%?

Did I read that correctly? That is some of the lowest in the nation--not the lowest but anything sub 4 is pretty good. Who runs this State anyway?

El Centro california, land of Democrats, tree huggers, political correctness, immorality, homosexuality, welfare state, high taxation, and generally anything goes, and their unemployment is 24%.

Well gee, what a shocker.
Have to leave | 6:36 p.m. Feb. 5, 2009
Cache Valley is awesome, but if you have a degree and a job that requires your degree and you loose your job, more likely than not you will have to move, or look outside the valley to find one. So one reason unemployment is so low is that if you loose your job you move out.

I grew up in Cache Valley & graduated from USU. I love the Logan area. The only problem was when I graduated 8 years ago, the best job I could find in CV had a nearly 30% lower salary than a couple of offers I had elsewhere. Cache Valley is nice, but there are lots of great places to live. Where I live now, the cost of living is fairly comparable to CV, but wages are much better. My work commute takes me just over 5 minutes from my driveway to my desk. I still visit CV at least 4 or 5 times per year. Cache Valley is a great place to raise a family & live but I really enjoy where I'm at and I have many of the same and also some other opportunities that I wouldn't have in Logan. It's all about trade-offs.

Latest stats released by UT Dept. Workforce Services
