Why a task force? How about a do something about it and get it done ASAP force. With no money and no clear mission for this ER task force it is just a way to put off voters, for another year, until the legislature meets again. Can't this task force be combined with the current "healthcare taskforce"?
If you need to see a doctor for minor yet urgent medical reasons such as a child with a high fever, there is no alternative to the ER. Doctors go home around three in the afternoon and dont come back in their respective clinics until about 11 am the next day.
25 years ago I trained as an EMT. Part of that training required that I work in an emergency room.
I was amazed at the Medicaid people coming in for the most trivial of problems. They did this because they knew they didn't have to pay for treatment.
The poor knew you can't get blood from a turnip so they showed up with headaches, coughs and cramps.
the reason people are going to the ER for non emergencies is that they can not be turned away for not having insurance. Work on getting AFFORDABLE health insurance for everyone and people will go to their doctors instead of the ER for non-emergencies.
