The Utah Legislature has made a major step towards stopping this senseless killing that is abortion. Keep up the good work! Well Done!!!
Abortion is termination of pregnancy. Does the bill have exceptions for the life of the mother? What about cases where the feus has deformaties not compatible with life? Should a woman be forced to carry a fetus to term if the baby has only half a brain?
Pregnancy decisions should be left between a woman, and her Dr. God will be the final judge of those decisions. If people are really concerned about the destruction of embryos, then they should also be against in-vitro fertilization which results in the destruction of embryos. Before Roe v Wade there were over 1.2 million illegal abortions/year. In 1930 18% of maternal deaths were due to illegal abortions. And, of course, poor women will represent a larger share of those who died.
murder is still murder, if a woman chooses death over life/ she should pay society back for robbing it of potential. It's also apparent to me that Ms. Hyphenated_Last-Name, believes there are no rights accorded to the LIVING fetus that ends up DEAD because a woman's so called right to choose. I wouldn't want to be facing God with that on my consience...oh right...she has no consience. I bet she wouldn't have wanted to be aborted. God forgive her & her ilk for worrying more about our environment than the unborn.
Way to go UTAH!
right back to the dark ages. Utah Republicans won't support sex education, won't support social programs to help single mothers and then want to take away a woman's right to choose. I just don't get it. Only in Utah.
Why doesn't the legislature come up with ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy? Nobody thinks abortion is a desirable outcome. The approaches taken up by Utah don't seem to address root cause. How about some real sex education based on science?
Making abortion illegal doesn't stop abortion. Countries with the highest rates of abortion are also where it is illegal. Don't like abortion? Maybe education and easy access to birth control are better ways to decrease abortion. Why doesn't the LDS church take a position on Roe v Wade?
It would have been better had the law been written to REQUIRE pain alleviation for all fetuses being aborted after 20 weeks. It is preposterous to assume a fetus doesn't feel pain at that stage. Don't anguish the mother with having to think about the baby she is going to kill - just require it be done, no consent, and aid this being to their death. We sedate persons on death row.
And shame on you women having abortions after 20 weeks.
Hey, Here we go. Many other states have similar approaches to this issue. So get off the anti-Utah, anti-Mormon ship. It's not just Mormons and it's not just Utah. And how is conceiving unwanted children and then killing them before they are born an enlightened act? That sounds more like the dark ages to me.
It's amazing to me the twists of logic people go through to try to justify abortion as simply a woman's decision.
As was said in the article, "If an unborn child is killed by someone punching a woman in the stomach, it is murder." But as long as the woman WANTS the child murdered, and uses a licensed murderer, well that's just fine!
You can't have it both ways. Either an unborn child is a non-person, or it is not. Either their "termination" by any means is murder, or it is not.
And advocating the killing of special needs kids in the womb is no more defensible than killing them outside of the womb.
It is unfortunate that the debate on when life begins has been simplified to either conception or birth. I don't believe that a fertilized egg is a person, but any mother who's felt their baby kicking away inside of them knows very well that the baby is no longer simply a part of her body. Somewhere in between is where the line should be drawn.
I have mixed feelings on abortion. The biggest problem I have, with people on both extremes, is in the (lack of) comparison of fetal rights to animal rights.
Basically, I don't see why a lump of flesh with human DNA but no neural activity should have more rights than a fully developed animal. On the other hand, it doesn't make sense to say it's wrong to murder animals but it's okay to have an abortion.
It's a complicated issue, but I would really love to hear a deeper philosophical and scientific exploration on the topic. I think there are aspects of the topic that many people haven't thought about before.
I am a father and I watched one of my babies die before my eyes because a negligent doctor did not think the baby was viable and set the baby aside to deliver what he thought was the viable twin. The twins died before "viability". I personally believe the "fetus" is alive. They move on their own in the womb. They respond to noise while in there. They are precious children.
I haven't commented on this issue yet, but now I must. How many of you who are against this bill have adopted one of these unwanted children? How many of you have given your own money towards programs to reduce unwanted pregnancies? How many of you that get on your high horse about those on welfare and taking government handouts are usually the same ones that are having these unwanted children or can't afford to take care of them, thus perpetuating the very issues of welfare you so vehemently decry? How many of you have a real solution to this problem of unwanted pregnancies that would reduce abortions? How many of you think it's okay to have abortions in the case of incest, rape, or the health of the mother? Remember, as one poster put it, murder is murder, so you can't have it both ways. How many of you even know how many children are waiting to be adopted. Maybe it should be mandatory for every couple to adopt an unwanted crack baby or a baby with severe disabilities. Maybe it would be different if it were men having the babies.
If they don't want the baby why don't they give it up for adoption???? is that so darned difficult????? My word! Abortion should be outlawed as long as there is adoption around. I would even support gay adoption before abortion if there was no other choice.
Utah extremism: By your logic we should also make murder and rape legal in order to decrease their occurences. Killing a baby should be considered WORSE than killing an adult.
Also, athiestgoddess (probably the most ironic name I've ever seen on here), your comment about not causing the mother additional anguish is equally ridiculous. If a mother is about to murder her child, she should DEFINITELY feel as much anguish as possible, hopefully to the point where she might change her mind and not commit such a heinous crime.
I can't believe we live in a society that is allowed to murder our babies...
I think these measures are great, and hopefully will be a step in the right direction for utah, who can then hopefully be an example to other states. Let illegal abortions be regarded as murder. Let women who want to kill their babies understand exactly what they are doing. Way to go Utah!
If you can't accept the responsibility of parenthood. Stop having sex. If you judge yourself capable of having sex, you should also be capable of dealing with the consequences without prematurely ending a life.
WHAT ABOUT RAPE AND INSEST ETC. I'M NOT FOR ABORTION BUT SOMETIMES THE BABY MAY BE BETTER OFF. LIKE GOD WON'T GIVE IT ANOTHER CHANCE
Utah doesn support social programs to help single mothers, but why must the state always be responsible for sex education? Who's raising the kids anyway? Shouldn't parents be responsible for educating their kids about sex, just like they're responsible for not allowing them to drink underage, or drive a car without proper training, insurance or a valid license?
I have a hard time with anyone saying that any baby would be better off dead. I have worked with handicapped individuals and they are usually very happy and they CERTAINLY would not rather be dead. I'm sure babies of rape and incest would also rather be alive than dead. It comes down to a selfish decision to kill the baby rather than go through with the pregnancy. It is murder. They should be given a chance at life! It is not fair to decide for them that they are better off dead. Killing handicapped people (or babies) is still murder in every sense of the word.
The Legislature just made cuts to the state budget - painful cuts at a time when spending can help our state economy. Why are our Legislators bound and determined to spend the state's limited tax resources on defending Legislation that they know will end in a protracted legal battle costing millions of dollars? Rep Wimmer and others can claim that their bills are not an end-run around Roe vs Wade, but they clearly know that a legal challenge is inevitable.
