Will the real Mitt please stand up? Is the real Mitt the one who supported abortion rights in the 1990s or the one who doesn't support them now? I guess I'm disoriented....
re: Oh Please | 1:45 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
and will the real Oh Please just lay down and go to sleep...you'll feel much less "disoriented" in the morning
C'mon Mitt | 1:55 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
I don't have a problem with Mitt changing his position on abortion. But I do have a problem with how be basically attacks those, like Obama, who hold the same view as he once did.

I'm pretty sure he explained his views and the reasons for his change in position ad nausium in the Republican primary campaign.

...or are you just trying to discredit the man by painting him as a hypocrite and supposing the uneducated masses will take your word for it?
0802 | 2:00 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
One word sums this guy up, hypocrite.
Stalwart Sentinel | 2:54 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Though I do not always align with Mitt on his policies, I do respect him as a capable politician who has potential to do our nation good. That being said, he is currently playing to the Reich Wing with such a disdain for dignity it is difficult to hold him in high regard.
Aaron | 2:59 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Romney's finally saw the light. Is that a bad thing?
Bot | 4:29 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
The real Mitt has been apparent for the past two years. You obviously haven't lived in Massachusetts if you think an abortion opponent can be elected to ANY office in that liberal bastion. "Secular-progressives" control every aspect of that state.

Would it have been better for Mitt to have been defeated as Massachusetts Governor, or for him to compromise his principles? It is your call.
Grandma | 4:52 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Haven't you ever changed your mind when you've found a better way, or found you were wrong? Aren't we allowed to change our minds? Thank goodness we are allowed. It takes a big person to admit they made a mistake and be willing to change their attitude.
No, please... | 5:07 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
don't bring up the flip-flopper charge again. When Romney became governor he was able to show how conservative he is, opposing gay marriage and wholesale abortion in Massachusetts. I wish people would stop attacking him because of things he said in the campaign against Ted Kennedy. Nobody could have mounted a credible campaign against Teddy without appearing to be moderate on touchstone issues in the people's republic. However, once he became governor his true character came through. The same could be said of Huntsman, who did exactly the opposite, portraying himself as a conservative on touchstone issues like illegal immigration and then moving the other direction once he got elected.
Romney isn't the one to criticis | 5:23 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
"Romney criticizes Obama on abortion"?

I also don't like Obama's position on abortion, however

Romney was "pro choice" for as much of his life as it suited him politically. Shortly before his run for the presidency, he became pro life.

He says he didn't think it through until the time of his switch, I find that hard to believe, if so he is rather shallow in the face of a halocaust.
Hold your criticism | 5:56 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Mr. Romney, how is it that it took this long in your life, until you came to the realization that Abortion is wrong?

If you always did realize it, then you ignored it for political purposes.

If you really did recently come to this realization, then you come across as a shallow person, too involved in their political career to think instrospectively about issues of the day.

Another possibility is that you just switch when ever it suits you for political purposes.

In short, your criticising anybody on this issue comes across as unseemly.
Dr. C | 6:01 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
I am against wholesale abortion, but am uncomfortable with opposing Obama's plan to stimulate the economy.

The Republicans have to accept a huge part of the blame for failing to establish control systems that got us in the financial debacle we are in.

I was a classmate of Mitt at BYU. I admire many things he has accomplished. . . and I think he needs to give Obama's stimulus plan a chance.

Last time I checked the economy was in the worst slump we have seen in thirty years. If you don't like Obama's plan, contribute a better alternative with specific details.

I like the idea of investing in infrastructure and education.
RoyBoy | 6:03 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
How ironic that a leading member of the political party that got the country into such a mess has already begun criticizing the one who is doing his best to solve the problems. You're politics at its worst, Mitt, and no longer credible.
Oh Please you | 6:21 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Who cares what Mitt Romney previously supported. He now stands against abortion. Who made the rule that you can't change your mind on a position? Don't you ever change your mind on anything important? One of the biggest complaints against George Bush is that he was so hard-headed that he would never change his mind on any decisions. But of course if he had changed his mind, he would have been called out for that immediately.
Look to Life | 6:21 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
It sounds like "Oh, please" has never changed his mind on anything--that he's never made a mistake. In reality, he's just written to poke fun, instead of attempting to charitably deal with the real issues of life and death. I would encourage all of us to put a higher priority on the sanctity of the lives of unborn infants.
sarah jane | 6:22 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Mitt should be our President. Obama is going to get us into a horrible mess. Sending money to other nations to fund abortions is absurd. Also taking the rights to refuse to perform abortions from the medical profession should be protested from every state in this nation.

Mitt was the only good choice we had during elections. Too bad so many were blinded to Obama's true colors. I wasn't.
Hey MITT | 6:25 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Obama is a DEMOCRAT. Their party supports abortion rights on the whole, even if individual members differ in their level of support for it. So for Obama to support a pro-choice or abortion measure isn't extreme or wildly liberal. It's par for the course for a Democratic president, just as an anti-abortion measure is for a Republican one. Get a grip, find out which side of issues you are REALLY on, and make informed comments to the press next time.
The Anti-Prig | 6:27 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Saying you think there are times when aborting a baby should be an option, as when the life of the mother is in danger, is now considered a full-blown support for abortion as birth control?

Congratulations to the reporter who wrote this article. It should be enshrined in the Smithsonian, being the first article ever that did not call the person criticizing HRH Obama a racist.
Look to Life | 6:35 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
I would correct my above comment to "putting the highest priority on the lives of unborn infants." When we remember the weakest of us all (namely the unborn), we are remembering all of us. We are remembering that we all have weaknesses and that we all can succeed.
To Oh Please | 6:40 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Evidently you weren't paying attention some months ago when Romney clearly stated that he changed his views on abortion a number of years ago. I suppose politicians don't have that right like everyone else.
A noose around our necks? | 6:50 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
When Mr. Romney says of the bailout that:

"we could precipitate a worldwide crisis of confidence in America, leading to a run on the dollar ... or hyperinflation that wipes out family savings and devastates the middle class"-

it reminded of Georgetown University historian and Pres. Clinton's mentor Dr. Carroll Quigley's statement in his 1966 book, "Tragedy and Hope", regarding the Anglo-American ruling elite's attempt to eliminate the middle class in order to establish a New World Order and what a "tragedy" it would be for ordinary Americans to resist the tide:

"There is no point in struggling against the noose around our necks, because resistance will merely guarantee strangulation."

truevoice | 6:59 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Oh Please :

It is clear that your level of information is quite low. Governor Romney changed his position on abortion several years ago when he was governor of Massachusetts and he has been determined to be pro-life ever since.

shuttdlrl | 6:59 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Mitt needs to run for Senator and save America.
RoyBoy | 7:24 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
How ironic that a leading member of the party that got the country into such a mess is already criticizing the one who is taking decisive measures to solve the problems. This is politics at its worst, Mitt, and you are no longer credible.
Chris J | 7:33 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Oh hush up.
Obvjiously | 7:34 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
he is till running for president. He doesn't know what he stands for. I like him personally but politically he is a mess.
Bikeboy | 7:45 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Forget it, Mr. or Ms. Oh Please. Your drivel just reflects the sound bites from the media and does not have the precision to even tell us the facts of what the real issue was or his position at either time.
patrick c | 7:45 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Nice posturing Mitt. Now please go away.
Bear Laker | 7:46 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
I guess you are. Do you think it would be a good idea to read the article? It was pretty clear to me. But then I am of average intelligence, clearly able to understand such stuff.

@Oh Please 12:49 a.m. | 7:49 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
The "real" Mitt is the same as he's always been. I'm sure you'll recognize him -- he's the one who will say anything it takes to get elected, even if he turns around and says the exact opposite moments letter (when he's talking to people on the other side of the issue). Mitt is nothing more than a political hack.
Hypocrite | 8:04 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Romney seems to have amnesia. I'm actually surprised that he's still pretending to be a right wing zealot; the checklist didn't get him elected and it won't work if he tries it again. "...infect our own criminal population..." what? Since when has Romney cared about criminals and how they live in prison? He's concerned about American criminals? That's why we should keep Guantanamo open? Wow, the guy is so fake it's amazing that anyone still lets him speak at their little retreats.
Oh Please! | 8:04 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Obama is in knee deep in issues. Let's give funding to the abortion groups so that they can kill and then we will release the terrorists from Guantanomo so that they can go back to killing. Sounds pretty stupid to me. Who cares if Mitt's ideology has evolved, what matters is that he doesn't enact on this horrendous legislation.
Anonymous | 8:08 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Yep you are
Anonymous | 8:11 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Dear 'Oh Please,'

Get your facts straight. Romney did not support abortion rights per se,' but supported the right to choose, what Mormon's refer to as "Freedom of Choice."

He's gone on record both then and since that he was and is personally opposed to abortion, but where the issue of freedom of choice and forced choice (which Pro Life really is about) is concerned, both his Mormon religious teachings and upbringing taught him that Freedom of Choice is the basis of life and that without that Freedom of Choice anything less (which would also include Pro Life agenda) would still be of Satan, no matter how well intentioned.

I too was taught this as a small town Mormon (very conservative and traditional indeed) in Sunday School, 4 years of Seminary and BYU seminary.

I wouldn't vote for Romney if given a choice, but hey, this guy is probably one of the most honest and straight up of any offered by the Republican party, like him or not.

Eugene | 8:13 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Yes, "Oh Please", you are confused as are most who continue decry Mit as a flip-flopper. For some it is "disorientation", for others it's activist liberalism attacking a credible opponent and for a unique few it is simple although veiled anti-Mormon rhetoric.

Mitt is a man of honor and has explained his change in stance as many times as can be explained. Every individual on this planet evolves their views as they learn and experience their own evolution of life. Mitt is no different. This is a fact of life.

To not allow Mitt to participate in this life-long learning process of the human race is ridiculous. I actually respect a politician that actually has the guts to change his mind after receiving credible facts. We have too many stubborn politicians that disregard facts and stick to their guns even when their stance is wrong.

God bless those politicians that make the right and moral choices when faced with the facts no matter what their political party demands.
Go AWAY Romney | 8:15 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
I agree. I actually use to support this guy, but now i get nauseated hearing him speak.

I still think he made one of the biggest blunders in history in how he "tried" to portray himself as this right wing crusader. If he would have been the moderate Mass governor (if that really is what he is) he could have had a chance..

now, i just want him to go away.
Broken Record | 8:15 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
The "flip/flop" tag on Romney is a broken record. Do we have any original thinkers in political junkie land?
Romney any day, every day | 8:23 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
In this kind of economy, the MOST urgent, desparate thing America needed to do in the first few days was to increase abortion funding????
ex-Guantanamo detainees on al qaeda tapes within days of their release ??? At best, Obama stumbled.
I'd take someone with REAL economic savvy right now.
I'd take Romney today, any day, every day.
What's Hypocritical? | 8:25 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Does Hypocrite 8:04 post know how Romney has ever felt about the prison population? I seriously doubt it. You're anti-Romney just for the sake of being anti-Romney. Secondly, and most importantly, Romney wasn't even expressing concern for other prisoners, he was expressing concern about YOU AND ME! If the prison population is poisoned because terrorists are in their midst and influencing them, the danger is how their conduct changes in prison, and more importantly, how their attitudes and conduct change when they get out. Many of them already have anti-establishment attitudes - will some of them with pending release dates be a greater danger to us when they're released?
cjsnyder | 8:35 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Wouldn't it be nice if we ALL respected each other's opinons, no matter how misguided WE thought they were? I think there will come a day when folk will cease to be identified by or with a party; then perhaps we'll get opinions based on THEIR statements & records, rather than a HARD & FAST allegiance to party, even in the face of a non-conforming reality.
A woman's right | 8:37 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
No man should decide whether or not a woman chooses to terminate a pregnancy or not. That needs to be hre choice, and if she chooses to have an abortion, it needs to be safe and legal. This should not be controlled by men.
RIGHT | 8:47 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
We're all worried about Mit???? Are you folks serious not seeing where Obama is taking us???? BLIND LEADING THE BLIND
Cats | 8:48 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
To ALL you anti-Mitt people: please remember that ANY intelligent person reserves the right to change his or her mind. Would you be happier if he had stayed pro-choice? He realized he was wrong, admitted it and changed. That was the right thing to do. Would you have him contnue to do the wrong thing? He has taken the right path.

I don't believe that he was ever, in his heart, pro abortion. As a stake president he advised young women in his stake NOT to get abortions. Unfortunately, he made the wrong choice when he ran for governor. He was wrong to do that and when he was governor he knew he couldn't sign legislation or executive orders that promote abortion. He refused to do it.

Please, allow people to admit they are wrong, repent and change. He's doing the right thing now and that's what really counts.

Love it!!! | 8:59 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Nothing scares liberals more than "mITt," the clown (according to them) that is out to kill their precious spending on welfare, arts, contraception, pork of all kinds, etc., because they know he would get it done!

I hope Obama is successful, or at least doesn't put the U.S. in an hopeless, downward death spiral. I have no confidence in his policies though, as I have half a brain and understand that we can't spend our way out of financial problems with borrowed money.

Ready for a revelation? Here is the only way to get us out of this and restore our financial credibility: cut taxes and spending.

RBC | 9:00 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
As for Mitt and change, I can only say that I myself am a different person than I was 10 or 15 years ago. I actually voted for Clinton--but never would again. 8 years of Bill and Hillary changed my mind. And Harry Reid and Ms. Pelosi have only furthered that mind set switch. So if you call Mitt a hypocrite for changing some of his opinions, I guess you have to call me one too. I changed my mind, for reasons that seem important to the future of our country. I guess they still let you do that in America.
Romney For Something! | 9:01 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
You have my vote.

Paid For By Rush Limbaugh.

to Hypocrite | 9:05 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
It is unlikely that Romney has deep feelings for American criminals and more likely that he worries that they will be indoctrinated "infected" by Guantanmo detainees to hate America and commit acts of terrorism upon their release from prison.
Indiana | 9:08 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
It is so sick and wrong to me that some people want everyone to stay in the same place emotionally and spiritually. Really folks, it is ok to change your standing on something especially when you change for a higher path. That is apparently what Mitt Romney did. He changed to a higher and better way of thinking. It is called repentance and change. It is called growing up and realizing what is worth the most in this life.

I am not so sure some of these ignorant comments are about that though. It maybe that some of you just cannot stand to see someone rise above you and your petty thinking!

Go Mitt! Keep being a great spokesman for copnservatism.. You know it is working when people get annoyed with you and call you names just like they did on the playground in 3rd grade!
Desert Dog | 9:23 a.m. Jan. 31, 2009
Well, quite frankly if we had Mitt in the White House we would actually have a chance of turning this economy around. With Obama's plan, as currently outlined, he will we sink this ship with fiscal irresponsibility. His recent economic plan is just a bunch of pork and has NO SUBSTANCE to improve our economy. The American citizens have been duped by a smooth talking politician with NO EXPERIENCE! We will reap what we have sown.
