Senate Minority Leader Patricia Jones is obviously from Holladay. How many illegal immigrants does she really come across every day? People like her have NO CLUE about the problems and societal drains illegals impose on OUR communities. Do your JOB Patricia and other politicians. Put into effect the bill that was passed last year. You are supposed to be a voice of the people and the large majority of Utahns want this bill passed. Stop with your own agendas.

Utahn

So I wonder what the ACLU attorney would say about Utah's laws which allow illegal aliens to attend college paying in-state rates, or granting a driver privilege card using an IRS ITIN number. Both of which are clearly in opposition to Federal law. Clearly, Utah is exceeding Federal authority in these cases. It's also silly to think that this issue will be resolved in 3 or 4 months by Congress. This same argument is made year after year without any sort of Federal resolution.

At the very least, Utah should roll back all policies which grant illegal aliens benefits not authorized by Federal law.

I am aware of several studies which show that illegal aliens are a net drain on state coffers, including one done for the State of Oklahoma which was done before they passed the law which SB-81 was based on. I wonder why this report wasn't able to cite any of those?

Jim

Enough with the stalling and wasting time! Bills that will improve this law by creating task forces and the like are welcome additions. Anything that lessens the impact of the law or delays it is bad politics at its worst.

What a load..

Typical delaying tactics. Google "impact illegal immigrant studies" and you'll get a half million hits. There, I just saved us years of study and $150,000. Get off your cans and implement this bill.

Re; RJ

That's because upper-class east bench residents like Senator Jones are the ones who benefit from illegal immigration.

They get the benefits of hiring cheap nannies, maids, gardeners and pool boys, or lowering the labor costs for their businesses, while paying none of the costs.

The illegal immigrants usually live on the west side of town and send their kids to the local public schools. If their gangbanging kids were going to Skyline or Olympus it would be a different story.

in a sorry State

Why is it that illegal aliens pretty much get a easy ride and not much fear of being deported coming into the US but legal immigrants need to spend thousands of dollars for INS processing and face deportation and more fees if they are late submitting paper work?

Go figure.

Please this Law hae a negative impact in our State

Crime Stats

The FBI just released a report showing that 80% of the crimes committed are caused by the growing gang problem. The most vicious gang is MS-13, which is mostly comprised of Spanish-speaking illegal aliens and their offspring. How many people have died in Utah in the past year due to these types of gangs. I can think of two cases right now, and I'm sure there are plenty more.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO more delays! the public, through numerous opinion polls (and in the 3rd district bouncing pro-illegals Cannon in favor of Chaffetz) has said time and again they want an end to illegal immigration and enforcement of immigration laws. Why does the legislature fail to listen?

we have no problem with legal immigration, be they brown, yellow, black, or whatever, but we do have a problem with illegals. requiring a causasian from Europe to pay thousands of dollars and wait years and years and jump through all sorts of hoops to get here while allowing an hispanic to wade a cross a river or sneak through a desert and stay here for as long as they want is blatantly racist in favor of the hispanic.

Enforce SR81

We'd instantly solve our unemployment problem in this country if we enforced our immigration laws. The 30 million illegals would have to leave, salaries and demand for workers would go up. Problem solved. We would use less water, power and help the environment with 30 million fewer people trespassing on our property. Schools would be able to use the same amount of money on fewer students, improving their education. Our neighborhoods would be better off with only one family per home, versus the 15-20 people trying to live in one home. This is just common sense, why do more studies have to be done???

Be kind

Hands off these poor immigrants who have come here for a better life. We've got plenty of room and food and indoor plumbing and good schools and good hospitals.
They aren't hurting anyone.
Besides, they are good for business. Why else would the Chamber of Commerce support a path to legalization?
We don't want their kind of work anyway. Who wants to hang drywall or roof houses?

MEDICARE KID

The illegals and the Chamber are stealing from the rest of us that have to pay for the illegal's education, their medical bills, and we have to house them in our prisons(it's billions). There is no free lunch. Those that employe them are the public thiefs, stealing from the public troft, and they should should be prosecuted, and sent back to Mexico with the illegals..

re: Be Kind

I roofed my own house last summer and hung my own drywall. I don't need an illegal to do anything for me in my life that an American citizen won't do. If you think 15 million plus illegals aren't hurting our economy, schools, infrastructure etc. you are extremely naive or just plain dumb. Get your compassionate head out of the sand and stand up for America.

Re: Enforce SR81

Actually it will only resolve our employement woes if everyone who is unemployed is willing to kill and pluck chickens, pick strawberries and wash dishes for a living. I'm so tired of people with skills or an education claiming that an immigrant working a low skill job took away their employment. And by the way, this is a bill, not a resolution so it would be SB81, and you don't enforce a bill, you pass a bill.

Elaine

If the Utah government is knowingly allowing illegal immigrants to be here, which is against the law, I will be the first to see them in court if any illegal ever causes me or my family any type of problem. Their is plenty of documentation showing the state of Utah is aiding illegal immigration. The government should be held accountable, as should every politician who votes to allow illegal immigration. You politicians had just better hope nothing happens to me or my family. This will be the beginning of many state, federal, and civil lawsuits you can't afford.

John Reynolds

SB81 must NOT be watered down or delayed !
The longer we wait, the more damage is done !

Re: Enforce SB81

Here is a copy of some of the most ridiculous, factless rhetoric on this site: "We'd instantly solve our unemployment problem in this country if we enforced our immigration laws". You are a joke. People who actually believe that cannot be taken seriously.

I know of the Public Policy Institute of America (non-partisan) that reports immigrants add over 80,000 dollars to the economy across their lifetime. That does not include the BILLIONS of dollars that they put into Social Security, which they will NEVER receive. For those mentioning "studies" that prove otherwise I would love to know where I can find them.

You need to find a new veil to cover your discriminatory feelings. You all make me sick. Perhaps you can go hold hands in the Celestial Room and ale pale ale about it and see if all the brown people just disappear. I can see why you are all so angry because your entire lives are based on a lie and you are so used to following blindly you make the Emperor's New Clothes sound silly.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I get tired of these people who claim illegals only take jobs we don't want. Roofing and hanging drywall are hard work, but they actually pay pretty well when illegals aren't suppressing wages. Many of the jobs they take are higher-paying contruction jobs (of which there are fewer and fewer nowadays). I know at least 2 people who have remodeled houses who specifically look to hire illegals because they can pay them less to paint and work on the houses being remodeled. jobs that would otherwise go to citizens are going to illegals.

With the construction jobs drying up, many illegals are going home because they don't want to wash dishes or pick strawberries, either. But as long as my crooked 'friends' have no moral problems with breaking the law and encouraging illegal behavior, we need actions like SB81.

Jascha Clark

Elaine you need to stop and consider that SB81 is almost certainly going to expose the state a much more costly set of lawsuits that it cannot afford. Legislation that other states have already gone through and lost and legislation that the bill which SB81 was based on is currently going through.

I would certainly wish that nothing bad happens to your family at the hands of an undocumented worker or a United States citizen. I also wish that you and everyone else on this site could take a step back and look at how the issue of immigration is 1) a human issue and 2) an extremely complicated issue with no quick fix. Any type of reform will have far reaching effects and we need to consider ALL of these before jumping into legislation that may not successfully complete its goal and may cost the state significantly more than it would save.

Misleading studies

The two studies cited make no differentiation between legal immigrants and illegal aliens, thus rendering them inaccurate and completely useless in determining the effects of illegal immigration.

In-depth studies have already been done about the costs to American citizens from ILLEGAL immigration (try visiting the FAIR website), including one in our neighboring state of Colorado. Why not simply read those reports and adjust proportionately to our population to come up with a reasonable view of the costs of illegal immigration?

I am convinced that the people behind these attempts to delay implementation of SB81 are those who profit from it while the rest of us bear the astronomical social costs. Shame on them and shame on the legislators who listen to them!

Our legislators profess to be concerned about ethics reform. How ethical is it to support law-breaking businesses who don't want SB81 enacted so they can pretend they don't know their employees are here illegally.

It's time for some real ethics reform in this state. I am weary of greed and dishonesty being the guiding principles of government.
