I attended the ceremony with my daughter. We traveled to the city from suburban Maryland on a Metro train arriving just before 9 am. We found our way to a ticketed security checkpoint and stood in line for about an hour and a half before entering. There were a lot of people but I wouldn't call it a crush. People were clearly moved by the moment and its historical significance. I went to take advantage of an opportunity to witness a truly American experience. To me the most significant aspect of the ceremony is the peaceful transition of power from one man to another--from one political faction to another. Clearly the expectations for the Obama presidency are very high. He has convinced a lot of people that he can lead us to security and prosperity. So far we have just words. I am incredulous about many of his approaches including the notion that we can solve our credit problems by borrowing even more. While people waited in the cold they entertained themselves by cheering or booing dignitaries as they arrived and were announced. Why cheer for Colin Powell and boo Clarence Thomas?

Underwhelmed

Yes, it was historic. And we're big enough to allow that the first half-African American President is a significant thing. But not all "Change" is for the better. I was less than moved by his speech -- unlike during the campaign when he gave some real spell-binders. What leaves a lot of us (middle class, white america) cold is his black preacher's irreverent, and even juvenille poke in the eye at the end telling that "yellow could be mellow" and "white embrace the right." It was a definite put-down of white America and an inasupicious and undignified ending. I hope this isn't the harbinger of more to come.

Like the rest of the mortals, I will turn to my God, My Family, My Guns and and UTV. God will never Lie to me. Friends and Family, maybe but are still worth working with. UTV and Guns will never lie to me or mess me over like this government will. With no hope left for the USA, life will still move on.

Underwhelmed: Seriously?!? Someone does something back that you (white people) have done to them for decades and your miffed? Really? Get Over Yourself. Pretty much everything white people have done to black people is undignified.
