Nothing short of an uprising will stop the insanity of anti-energy, anti-growth, anti-capitalism, anti-freedom, anti-democracy wackos like this one!
We need to all speak out against those who put us in the energy hole we're in today, sent all our money to the Middle East and Venezuela, and gave us coal-fired power plants that pollute the air because they naively opposed nuclear power.
Thinking citizens unite!
OK, Tim - put your actions and lifestyle where your mouth is.
I want to see you void your ENTIRE life of ALL plastics (credit cards, phones, synthetic clothing), all electrical devices (which includes your central heating system), all petroleum products (including a gas-powered vehicle), and in fact, all man-made items (there goes your home full of paint, carpet, wiring, plumbing, metal, etc.). You want to force us do do the same - well, buster, lead the way. Live the example you want others to follow. Given your public statements, ONLY A HYPOCRITE WOULD REFUSE THIS CHALLENGE.
DeChristopher will be made out to be a victim by the national media. Looks like the usual suspects showed up to spout out their normal rubbish at the rally. Really, does Rocky Anderson have a life?
Somebody has to stand against the destruction of our environment by greedy corporations. Greed was the cause of the financial meltdown and greed will be the cause of the utter destruction of our landscape.
I am amazed that Utahns are content with storing piles of nuclear waste and allowing unscrupulous companies to exploit our state.
Real "difference-makers" solve problems. DeChristopher and his supporters only create chaos and ramp up the emotional content without creating a stage for solutions. They steal time and attention away from those real players in improving the environment and so many other issues.
Energy, transportation, housing, poverty, crime, environment, etc., etc. need fine-grained, pragmatic interaction between the players (in his "game") to apply technology, rationality, economics and concensus to move society's needs forward. Hurling rocks over the fence without real engagement only furthers the lack of reasonable resolution or understanding of the problems or opportunities.
One small example, so-called environmentalists decry or block the movement/disposal of hazardous waste (which is typically highly diluted chemical with mostly dirt and water) on the highway when the real risk is the pure chemical in the tanker being delivered to an end user. The public is misled and poorly served.
If the environmentalists with keen vision would work in-concert with agencies and industry to effect better public policy, smart compromise and timely implementation, we would all be better off. DeChristopher's call for civil disobedience only diverts our attention while the real problem solvers desperately need our support. Always playing David against Goliath is getting old.
Nothing is more dangerous than the certainty that one is right. . . .
I don't know which is worse for the environment, bad science (aka Al Gore), or the people who take the view that unless you see things their way, that you must be a bad, evil person. (aka Al Gore)

What Tim did was and is wrong. Enviromental groups had already made sure that several areas near parks and monumnents were not part of the sale. If he had gone there to purchase any additional ones he felt were important, and then not develop them, fine. He didn't. He purposely interupted the auction, and not just to bid on specific pieces he planned on purchasing.
5 years, and restitution would be a good start. He is no hero. We don't need more of this.
Tim acted for the public interest. Luckily a US district court has issued a restraining order against many of the leases. Let's see how that affects the government's case against him. Both the litigation and Tim's civil disobedience have got results so far.
For those of you with short memories or lack of knowledge, the reason the US buys its oil and gas from overseas is due to that radical president: Mr. Eisenhower. He purposely proposed and pushed our buying oil and gas from overseas with the logic that first we use their oil and gas, and then when that is used up, we have our own to continue on.
Blame IKE, that radical...!!!
This man who has messed up the intricate, inside network trading in oil and gas leases deserves a gold star and our applause. He had the guts to stand up and say "Quit it." It is hard to think of progress as being "green" or "fair" or... but it is. Progress is not more and more and more profits and drilling by international companies. Yes, my good friends, there is no "American" company. They are and have been international companies for decades and decades now.
Go to the library and check out the old book: Seven Sisters, which relates how big oil and big gas colluded with each other and divided up the world. It is a not radical book. It is a factual, 1950s book. Very insightful too.
Tim won't go to jail if he has to pay for the land the money will be there. People care about the land.
The environment is not being destroyed, what a line of pure baloney. The environment is strong, resilient, and tougher than any of us.
I've lived in a lot of places, including Utah, and I've never seen anything even resembling an "environmental disaster." What, pray tell, is this guy alluding to? It can't be global warming, because that stopped in 1997 and the earth has gotten cooler since then. Plus, there is no credible evidence that man, or CO2 causes global warming anyway. This guy needs to be "reeducated" and get the brainwashing out of his head.
An uprising coming. This nation is so entwined in draconian debt and financial corruption that within 12 months radical environmentalism will not even be a blip on the radar.
Nothing will hurt the cause of environmentalism more than a wave of lawlessness and high-profile monkey-wrenching.
Just another nut....where do they come from????
Isn't it interesting that the former mayor was there along with the dean of the graduate school. Many of our problems start in the colleges and universities. Many of the professors are out of touch with reality, but speak as if they are experts on everything.
Thinkin'Man, what baloney! If Tim Christopher and SUWA had never existed, and we had tapped every last cubic foot of gas and barrel of oil in the U.S., we would STILL be in the "energy hole!" All the "anti's" you racked up can be checked by anyone typing in "Amy Goodman" and "Tim DeChristopher" in Google, to listen to DeChristopher's interview. Then judge for yourself, based on the posting below, who the real "thinkin' man" is.
I publicly denounced DeChristopher's act, though I am an environmentalist (whatever THAT means) myself. After the hue and cry and forced the BLM to remove the worst of a truly bad set of leases, I didn't think what was left rose to the level of civil disobedience. But Tim has accomplished one thing; he has exposed the BLM's fumbling and flawed process for all the nation to see, and I welcome the increased scrutiny.
Congratulations, Tim! And for thinkin'Man: please do not equal care for the environment with anti-freedom and anti-democracy. It's that kind of "thinking" that makes a discussion impossible. No doubt solutions are difficult to find in this complex area. But at least Tim provides a counterweight for local, irresponsible destructions. Give him the freedom to voice it.
I think it's funny how the movement started out as global warming but now here we are freezing our butts off and it's called Climate change...
"Our team is getting slaughtered. The referees have been paid off. There's no rules, and the other side is playing with dirty tricks. It's time for us to (stop standing on the sidelines and) rush the field."
A few questions for the educated DeChristopher.
1. If there are no rules why are there referees?
2. How can you do dirty tricks if there aren't any rules? Dirty tricks can't be done if there aren't any rules to be broken. See the below definitions.
Definitions by merriam-webster
Dirty Tricks: underhanded stratagems for obtaining secret information about or sabotaging an enemy or for discrediting an opponent (as in politics)
Underhanded: marked by secrecy, chicanery, and deception : not honest and aboveboard
Also I don't know that it is ever appropraite to "rush the field" in a game because someone is breaking the existant or non-existant rules. Try getting a better example next time or for that matter try being a better example! Hurting the economy will worsen the environment. Less $ = less to spend on fixing the environment or finding alternatives.
This dude should definately pay for his actions and purchases. The best way for him to fulfill his responsibilities as a noble citizen is to work for $0.05/hr in a federal penitentiary until he can afford to pay.....by his own means.
Lots of money due divided by $0.05/hr equals a long time in jail. JUSTICE.
