Wow... I thought the Chamber was for business. The Chamber sounds like an extension of Government ... increase taxes, fees and use taxpayer money to fund "stimulus" programs. I think Lane and the new political body should spend more time understanding what drives growth and productivity. I can assure you a dollar spent in the private sector goes much farther than government programs. How about getting behind capital gains tax cuts, State Income Tax cuts, etc. Only a politician could miss the folly of adding a gas tax and supporting a stimulus program. Don't they understand that embedded in lower gas prices is in fact additional dollars in the consumer's pockets who in turn will save, and spend according to what they want thereby stimulating the economy.
Close the chamber. It's a joke!
More tax on gas is dumb.
If we really really need a road or a building, now is a good time to do it, helping the economy. Other wise Gov needs to trim back, not take more from us.
Salt Lake Chamber is only one of many chambers in Utah. I'd be interested to hear what other chambers of commerce or associations may say on taxes.
I agree with what has been said about trimming government and not raising taxes. I also point out that citizens don't build roads alone. They do it through government. It's not in our economic interest as a state to leave I-15 in Utah County unfunded. It's not in our economic interest to ignore congestion problems on the western bench of Salt Lake County. So ... I'm grateful that business leaders step up and say the hard things. I also agree that it is best to pay for road improvements with user fees. Quit using sales taxes to pay for something that is metered through the pump.
The Chamber's proactive approach to our current economic condition is refreshing. I agree that an infusion into our transportation system is needed. The State contracts with private (non-government) companies to build roads and these companies can put people to work -- quickly. Our economy can't recover until people get back to work and gain some confidence in the future. Then they will ramp up spending -- driving demand for goods and services throughout our economy.
