BYU can beat mediocre average teams such as the mid to lower tier of the MWC or the dregs of the PAC 10. They cannot beat top 25 level teams. A couple of big reasons for this are that the offensive line is too big and unathletic...too slow. They simply cannot blow good defensive lines off the ball..which is needed for a balanced attack (need to run the ball with some zip). The offensive skill players are not blazing fast which is needed to make defenses pay for in your face tactics. We have the thunder backs but no game breaking offensive threats. The offensive play book is comparable to that of a pop warner outfit.
Defensively the lack of speed, poor athleticism and instincts in the linebackers and db's, and a very weak nose tackle are the main causes of a weak defense. Don't look for a true top 20 team unless these fundamentals are addressed. This last year BYU was not a true top 25 team...simply biased rankings. The only teams we beat this year were rather weak, or very weak teams. Not sure what the solution is. Hard to get speed and keep it at BYU.
QB Coach Doman | 9:04 a.m. Jan. 10, 2009
Coach Doman failed to help Hall. Hall did not improve; in fact he got worse throughout the year, and did not learn from his mistakes. Besides the defense not attacking, Coach Doman hurt the team terribly.

What Bronco Dosent Get:

Execution dosent matter if you are slow. You can execute perfectly, but if you are slow getting to the play it dosent matter. Slow guys who chase fast guys, even though execution is perfect, will lose every time.

When it comes down to it. Our recruiting pool is somewhat limited. I'd bet that not many football players want to go to the most "stone cold sober school in the nation." Thats not to say that there aren't great upstanding young men in other programs, but BYU players all have a lot to live up to. We should be thrilled that the program is doing as well as it is. I would love to see the cougs break into the BCS, but I don't know that we will ever be able to recruit the couple of real athletic players who might make the difference in the end.

QUIT DAWGING BYU ABOUT SPEED. I get so tired of hearing it. BYU lost their games because of TURNOVERS, not speed. Did speed cause the turnovers, or did turnovers cause the turnovers? A lot like the question on Remember the Titans "Did the blockers fumble the football or did YOU fumble the football?"

Did speed beat BYU in 2006? What about 2007? It didn't really even beat BYU in 2008, THE FRIGGIN' TURNOVERS DID. Lack of speed is an excuse by whiney fans and haters of why BYU fell short. Speed has an impact but it is not the difference in the game. Aside from all of this, BYU IS FAST ENOUGH. Just because the offensive lineman don't run 4.2 40 times doesn't mean that BYU lacks speed. BYU is not the fastest team in the league and it doesn't need to be. Don't be egotistical enough to claim that BYU is the slowest team in the league either, because they're not. If it was the slowest, then apparently speed isn't important at all because the rest of the "faster" teams in the conference usually loose to BYU anyway.
Vanilla Milk Shake | 11:53 a.m. Jan. 12, 2009
what you get with Bronco is a Vanilla Milk shake. Whitingham provides a double chocolate crunch. The vanilla approach of Bronco will never produce a BCS worthy team but BYU seems content with that. I fully believe as long as BYU gets 8 wins a year that is good enough. I don't see any evidence that Bronco is looking to elevate the program to compete in the BCS so fans might as well just lower their expectations in that regard. BYU is NOT Utah and I really think Utah is going to jump into the PAC 10 at some point because they are committed to athletic excellence rather than just mediocrity like BYU. Bronco is the PERFECT coach for what BYU wants in a football coach. He puts the integrity of the recruit first and winning second. Hard for a hard core football fan to get too excited with that sort of "good enough" attitude but it is as it is I guess. There are lots of "other" fun things to do in the fall anyway rather that waste an entire afternoon watching mediocre football in Provo.
FIRE BRONCO | 12:05 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
I am so sick of hearing this "execution nonsense" from Bronco. Like Crowton, Bronco just doesn't seem to get it and instead is content making lame excuses for obvious shortcomings in his program. Execution had NOTHING to do with why his corners got beat so badly game after game. Speed and athleticism IS the problem but Bronco apparently feels all he has to do is practice a little more and everything will be fine. What a sad joke! Execution won't help much with undersized defensive linemen and linebackers either nor will it execution increase the speed and strength of OVERWEIGHT offensive linemen. BYU will continue to lose more games each year until it once again finds itself with more losses than wins. Bronco fits what Tom Holemo wants I guess. It is good that Whitingham didn't go to BYU because he would be totally frustrated trying to squeeze blood out of a rock in Provo. I say FIRE BRONCO but then I think, it really isn't Bronco, it is the bone heads above him who think mediocrity is good enough.
0-6 start in 2009 | 12:11 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
after the Y starts 0-6 next year I think Bronco's execution excuse will have worn pretty darn thin with fans. BYU players are sub-par for divsion one and the 2009 season will bring that point into FLAMING FOCUS. My prediction is that once attendanced starts to fall off dramatically the administration will only then start to re-evaluate their head coach and realize that they need a football coach and not a seminary teacher running the program.
Collie right to leave. Unga next | 12:28 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
Collie was right to enter the draft. I'm sure if Austin felt like 2009 would be better than 2008 he would have stayed because it is BIG risk going into the NFL combine as a junior. Obviously Austin feels his best days at BYU were behind him so might as well not rish injury and take what you can get in the NFL. I'm sure Unga is kicking himself for not going to the U right now. Expect Harvey to doing something after next years mediocre season.
work to be done - FIRE COACH | 12:31 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
first order of business - FIRE the head coach!!
let's hope...... | 12:41 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
....Bronco is smarter than his comments. Let's hope he see's and understands that execution is a product of speed and athleticism. Let's hope Bronco understands that a program is only as good as the athletes it recruits. Somehow, I don't sense a real deep understanding from Bronco about any of this. If BYU comes back with the same defense it finished with in 2009 then expect no better than a 6-6 record in 2009.As I said, let's hope the coach is not telling us everything!!

Bronco eliminated the 'bend don't break' philosophy when he threw out the old defense (3-3-5, I believe?).
Doubting Tom | 4:33 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
I have gone from a believer to a doubter in one year ...with Bronco. Not sure what to think at this point. One thing is clear, all the Crowton recruits are gone and the team is living off the Bronco recruits now. Not real impressed with the caliber of athletes he is getting. Seems to be going after the academics rather than the athletes and that will produce only one thing ... losses.
