It's nice to see a real conservative working for us. Chaffetz tells it like it is and he is listening to his constituents. Unlike Chris "amnesty" Cannon, Chaffetz is working for U.S. citizens and not illegal aliens.
Anonymous | 11:06 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Why should Limbaugh be required to give the victims of his lies equal time? If he doesn't lie, there's no problem. That's simple.

Why do republicans defend the right to use the public's air waves to spread lies? They can't coexist with the truth?

You ended the fairness doctrine to turn radio in to your propaganda machine. The party is ending.
IM2 | 11:12 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Great! Is this what we sent Chaffetz back to DC to do, deal with the same thing Cannon was dealing with? Great job 3rd District, we've elected someone who is doing 99% of what our last congressman was doing and we gained nothing.

We lost leadership and seniority for the same voting record.

Surely not Rush and Sean! Give me a break!

Perhaps the "Fairness" doctrine can be applied to MSNBC and NPR. It would be nice to have some balance to them and their bias.
RoR | 11:24 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
"...what they perceive to be Democratic threats to talk radio."

The Republicans have not "perceived" anything. Sen. Shummer, from NY, has stated several times that he wants to reinstate the "censorship doctrine." If it was really about fairness as the dems state, they would ensure that their is fairness on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, NY Times, LA Times, NPR, etc.

I am not a big fan of Hanity, I like Doug Wright better to listen to, but either way, I agree with Chaffetz on this. I don't see any reason to stop the "talk radio", as long as it isn't gov sponsored.
a question | 11:38 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Can the liberal agenda be spoken on the radio if they want too. Why dont we have left wing talk shows as well? Serious question if anyone has the answer.

i want my free speech protected liberal thug!thats why our forbearers made free speech the first amendment!!!!!!!!!!!!you socialist liberals wont stop until you have totally destroyed my constitutional rights!the major networks and cable gave the marxist obama 100 times more publicity!you werent crying then were you?if you want slavery back and censorship, you are my enemy!!!!!!!!!give me liberty or give me death!!ever heard that before?probably not, patrick henry!
Liberals on talk radio | 11:45 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Yes, it's true. There are Liberals on talk radio with actual radio shows.

The problem is nobody wants to listen to them.

Besides the lib's always have CNN CBS,ABC,NBC,MSNBC,NYTIMES,LATIMES,CHRIS MATTHEWS LITTLE KEITH OLBEMAN,WaPo, OPRAH ELLEN, Huff Po, DU,.......

The right has Fox, Hannity, Rush, Ingraham, Beck. Sounds fair and balanced.
Voter | 11:46 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Go Jason!

The threats are real.

Those who dislike conservatives on the radio can change the station (to NPR), or watch TV where NBC, CPS, ABC, Public TV, MSNBC will give them all the liberal slant they can stand, with NONE of the conservative messages they dislike. Or, they can tune into FOX News and get both sides.

Interestingly, the rabidly leftist Air America was unable to get enough listeners or sponsors to be economically viable. Looks like the marketplace of ideas cannot sell liberalism, at least on radio.

Jason gets it, and is working for us. I am grateful!
Stewart | 11:49 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Just as bad is the fact that the FCC requires T.V. cable companies to carry the antenna networks whether the customers want them or not. Even worse these T.V. stations, that provide their programming for free over the air, are allowed to charge the cable companies, and their customers, while the customers are not allowed to drop them. Cable companies in Utah for example are required to carry Channels 2, 4, 5, and 13 on their Basic tier and charge for it while providing it free over the air to those without cable. The cable customer cannot get out of paying for something that they may not even want.

Spanish Fork Cable is already warning of a price increase.
RoR | 11:48 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
RE a question

The liberals control all three major networks, CNN, NPR, and every major newspaper in the country. The really don't need any more voice. But in answer to your question, they have tried their hand at AM talk radio and failed misreable. Nobody wanted to listen to their sophomoric rantings against the Republicans.
Senhor Tambor | 11:53 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
As usual, those who profit the richest from the status quo are loathe to change it. One way to preserve the status quo is to confuse and anger those actually involved in the conversation, so no action may be taken.

The problem isn't what people say on the radio, or even who says it. Free marketeers are correct on this point. The big lie is that there is no 'free market of ideas' if the same half dozen media conglomerates own the entire market from coast to coast. If every restaurant in the US were owned by McDonald's, Burger King or Wendy's, would you expect anything but hamburgers when you eat out? If you order something from their menu that's not hamburger, can you expect it to be palatable? It's the same with radio. It's wholly owned by Giant Corporate America, and their menu will reflect what is best for Giant Corporate America.

We don't need to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine. We need to reinstate regulations as to how many media instruments per market are allowed. Then see how the 'market of information' looks.
what is fairness | 11:53 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
If people like Hannity, Limbaugh, Beck etc, aref orced to work under the fairness doctrine then woh will police the others? NPS, ABC, CBS, NBC. Is there really anyone that belices these coperations are fair?

If people want to listen to the conservitve shows then why should anyone else care? Find a liberal station or show and have at it. There is a freedom of speach issue here. Where does the government stop?

Taxes
Air
Food
Drugs
Social secrity
child care
housing
banking
IRS

On and on. Our government has overstepped everything that our founding fathers invisioned.
Anonymous | 12:04 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
>>The liberals control all three major networks<<

On what planet?

NBC is owned by GE, a giant defense contractor. Real leftist threat, there.

ABC is owned by Disney. They gave us eight years of Pro Bush propaganda, and even produced a fantasy version of 9/11 blaming Clinton.

CBS, Dan Rather aside, is owned by AOL Time Warner, an outfit who put NeoCons and Jesus on their magazine covers at about the same rate.

You really need to turn off that AM radio and think for yourself. Eat something else besides hamburger.
Madden | 12:04 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Amen - the government needs to stay out of the business of communication and entertainment, they just mess it up like everything else they touch.
radio? | 12:21 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
As a "liberal" I'm just a bit too smart to waste my time listening to a lying blowhard, no matter which side of the aisle he sits on. "Liberal" talk radio doesn't exist because we have better stuff to do...
RedShirt | 12:22 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
To "Anonymous | 11:06 a.m." why do you only want to have conservative shows censored?

"Why should Limbaugh be required to give the victims of his lies equal time? If he doesn't lie, there's no problem." I am not sure what you mean by your possible answer to that question, but I will add a simple and clear answer. It is called Freedom of speach. Rush is not employed to give both sides of a story, or is even employed as a reporter. He is a political commentator, and is hired to give his point of view on what is going on.

"Why do republicans defend the right to use the public's air waves to spread lies? They can't coexist with the truth?" Republicans can coexist with truth and lies because what it gives us again is freedom. Freedom for its citizens to speak out against the government

Here is the analogy of the day. If you are listening to a Jazz game on the radio, do you want the commentators to say what the opposing team needs to do to win along with what the Jazz need to do? If not, why not?
Roscoe | 12:22 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Apparently the lack of integrity demonstrated by Limbaugh, Hannity etc. doesn't bother their listeners. NPR may have a liberal bias but to compare it to these other shows is plain asinine.

Limbaugh etc. hammer constantly on "liberals" they demonize everyone they disagree with. They're constantly negative - it's evil stuff. NPR has guest experts on the issues discussed. Who are the experts Rush has on his show?

I think he has to abuse drugs to live with his miserable self. Do yourself a favor and tune these losers out.
John Reynolds | 12:31 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Long live free speech in radio.
Thanks for your great courage Jason !!
If you don't listen... | 12:38 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009

So the other side is also full of "lying blowhards" too?

I think we know who the lying blowhard is.

Hey, "whatisfairness":

Where, indeed, does government stop? Do you like a robust military? That's government, homie. Want secure borders? Who will do it? The Free Market? Like those interstate highways? Schools? Firefighters? Think the corporations you toady for would ever have provided them? As far as housing food and banking are concerned, they did just fine until the regulations were TAKEN AWAY AND THEY WENT AMOK.

Sorry, your logic just doesn't hold up. You want government, too. I just want it to do something different than you do.

Anonymous | 12:43 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Come on liberal loonies!

It's not about limbaugh integrity,

it's certainly not about lying, (he gives his OPINION afterall)

It simply about ideology,

liberal want the conservatives to have no voice no say in government.

NOTICE NO COMPLAINTS FROM THE LIBERAL LOONIES ABOUT LIBERAL TALK SHOW HOSTS!

NO COMPLAINTS about the HATE, INVECTIVE, AND VITRIOL that spills out of liberal talkers mouths.

Yeah, we know what it is about.

To "Anonymous | 12:04 p.m." it doesn't matter who owns the station, what matters is what is said during the "news" broadcasts.

Do you forget Chris Matthews saying "I Felt This Thrill Going Up My Leg".

Do you forget the media blitz to get any information on Palin that was no where near what was done on Obama?

Have you seen Disney's WALL-E? It is full of environmentalist propaganda.

Per George Town University's Center for Public and Media affairs "On the broadcast network newscasts, evaluations of Barack Obama and Joe Biden have been over twice as favorable as evaluations of John McCain and Sarah Palin 65% positive versus 35% negative for the Democratic ticket compared to 31% positive verus 69% negative evaluations of the Republican ticket."

According to the UCLA news room "'Overall, the major media outlets are quite moderate compared to members of Congress, but even so, there is a quantifiable and significant bias in that nearly all of them lean to the left,' said co‑author Jeffrey Milyo, University of Missouri economist and public policy scholar."

Please explain how, if the major news networks are not liberal there are findings like this?
Un-Fairness Doctrine | 12:45 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
The idea of the Fairness Doctrine actually dates back the 1930s, and it was used quite blatantly to suppress discussion that was considered to be in opposition to the powers that were. Many station owners in the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s were bullied by administration officials, threatening to revoke their licenses because they criticized some decision. (This was both Democrat and Republican administrations). Most stations gave in, because it was too difficult to fight the FCC. Maybe some here in Utah remember Herb Jepko and the Nighthawks, who broadcast overnight on KSL. He took calls from all over the country, as long as they didn't discuss any "controversial" topic. (That show evolved in to the Larry King Show after the Fairness Doctrine was repealed.)

Its not just about "fairness." The government should not be regulating what can and can't be heard. We should not be afraid of open discussion and advocacy of ideas. You don't have to agree, but remember that ultimately, the USA is better off with more debate, not less.
Anonymous | 12:56 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
>>it doesn't matter who owns the station,<<

Horsefeathers!

If you go to a McDonald's, you can't expect health food. Plain and simple. Anything else is just spin and rationalization.

If a network reports on a volcano wiping out an island village, is it "negative reporting about volcanoes"?

I'm not a big fan of the Democrats. But the other guys ran the sleaziest, most negative campaign I can remember. (Lapel pins, Muslim, birth certificate, Paris Hilton, )Can there be any question why the coverage was negative?
Senhor Tambor | 1:02 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
>>Its not just about "fairness." The government should not be regulating what can and can't be heard. We should not be afraid of open discussion and advocacy of ideas. You don't have to agree, but remember that ultimately, the USA is better off with more debate, not less. <<

I couldn't agree more. The problem is the government isn't the one limiting your choices. The half-dozen media conglomerates who own every radio and TV station in every city are. And they will continue to do so as long as Yahoos are arguing about "liberal v. conservative" baloney rather than what the ACTUAL PROBLEM IS.

To "Anonymous | 12:56 p.m." you did not answer my question. "Please explain how, if the major news networks are not liberal there are findings like this?" (see my 12:42 p.m. posting for the findings)

While you are at it, if the media is not biased or liberal, explain Chris Matthews saying "I Felt This Thrill Going Up My Leg".

As for sleaziest campaigns, there is a factor of news bias to be accounted for. There was the son of a prominent Democrat that hacked the emails of Palin. The government workers that illegally looked into the government files on Joe the plumber. Why is it that we didn't hear much about those news points?

As for the most of the negative points that you attribute to the Republican campaign, they are viral rumors that were never actually used by McCain.
TBaggins | 1:18 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
If fairness doctrine passes maybe we can get Savage back on CNN or MSNBC. Libs would love that - backfire.
RedShirt | 1:21 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
To "Anonymous | 12:56 p.m." but if I go to McDonald's I can get healthy food. I can actually go there and expect health food.

If a network reports on a volcano wiping out an island village, it is not positive or negative about volcanoes. It is positive towards volcanoes if they say that the volcano housed a spirit that defending itself from the evil villagers that were using it as a giant water heater against its will. It would be negative if they said that the volcano wiped out the village because it was spewing out its hate of mankind and sought out to choke the inhabitants.

As you can see by my examples, there is a difference between reporting what has happened vs putting a positive or negative spin on events.

Note to Chaffetz' Press Secretary: Enough press releases! The only person who likes to see/read about Jason Chaffetz every day is Jason Chaffetz!
Note to Deseret News: do you really have to print every press release you are sent?

If I read or hear another "Chaffetz sleeps on a cot" story I will go crazy. If Chaffetz actually passes a peice of legislation, rather than just signing his name to every right-wing Dear Colleague letter, write about that.

Then again, Chaffetz won't be passing any legislation any time soon becuase he has cornerned himself so far to the right that all he can do is bloviate and try to get attention with silly gimmicks like sleeping on a cot and leg-wrestling Colbert.

Man, some of the liberals posting here are perfect examples of why they shouldn't be influencing politics that affect the rest of us.

You liberals who deny there is a leftist or liberal bias in the media only do so because your ideology requires that you deny reality as it is, and try to make it appear to be something else.

No liberal bias? Who is Keith Olbermann, Conservative Commentator of the Year?? How about Bill Maher? Chris Matthews? If the Fairness Doctrine were really fair, these guys would also be looking at sharing their airtime with Conservatives. Is that going to happen? Don't bet on it. I wouldn't want it to happen anyways.

Most news today is leftist editorializing; they have just learned to hide it with newsspeak.

"Why should Limbaugh be required to give the victims of his lies equal time? If he doesn't lie, there's no problem. That's simple."

Hey Anon - It's called AIR AMERICA. It's not Limbaugh's fault that no stations want to run their programming and no one wants to advertise on it.

You can't force people to listen to things they DON'T WANT TO LISTEN TO!

conservative | 6:53 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
To the comment about having liberal talk radio shows: There have been liberal talk shows. The biggest problem for them has been not being able get the audiences that the conservatives get. NPR is certainly a liberal radio show and tv is filled with the likes of Keith Oberman (He is one of the most extreme). And, by the way, there are plenty of liberals who listen to the conservative programs and call in to ask questions and give their opinions.

What will the liberals do if the conservatives take control and limit their freedom of expression as the fairness doctrine will do to conservatives since the liberals get to define what "fair" means.

Since when has the constitution stated that only acceptable opinions are allowed to be expressed.

The whole idea of freedom of speech centered around politics & religion.

I know it is wisdom, to have opposition, in all things. My hat is off to Mr Chaffetz !!! Keep up your great work. May God always bless America with LIBERTY, FREEDOM OF SPEECH and a very high MORALITY in our beloved America. A word to the wise is sufficient.

Of course Repubs are fighting the Fairness Doctrine. The Repubs own the press. They want everyone to keep believing that the media is liberal. Yet, every media corporation in this country is in bed with the Repubs. Yet we still hear the propaganda from the right. Stalin believed that by controlling the press, he could control the government.

No one has suggested reviving the Fairness Doctrine. This is like the war on Christmas or the monster hiding under the bed. It doesn't exist.
