Western Oregon ? | 11:28 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
Utah is playing Gonzaga and LSU and BYU is playing high school teams like Western Oregon----WOW tough schedule---Oh wait you got whipped by Wake Forest
Look whose talking | 11:38 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
I bet Western Oregon would beat Southwest Baptist.
Whipped by Wake Forest???? | 12:12 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Did you even watch the game? It was close throughout. Also, Gonzaga and LSU are no powerhouse teams to be bragging about. Anyway, BYU will beat the "firewater" out of the Utes in Provo AND in Salt Lake.

How can you say anything about who we are playing? I'll give the utes credit for beating good teams, but c'mon, wait for a season where you didn't lose to southwest baptist and Idaho State! Our loss to Wake looks a lot better than your losses to "high school teams"
Southwest Baptist | 6:49 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Hey Ute Fans,

If your team loses to Southwest Baptist its first game of the season you lose all trash talking rights for the entire season.
Shell shocked??? | 7:53 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
NOT!!!

It was obvious throughout the game that BYU wasn't playing with any fire or intensity. It was a great scrimmage and a chance to give some of the bench players some extra playing time.

On to MWC play. Let the real season begin.

i think i'll cross over to utah!

i'am tired of watching these uninspired byu players!

coach rose may have gotten their attention for TWO OR THREE HOURS when he subed like he did!

if byu had any passion they would be 14-0!
Western Oregon | 9:12 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Last time I checked both Arizona St and Wake Forest were ranked much higher than Gonzaga and LSU. PLease don't go there Ute fans. Southwest Baptist. Please!
NCAA Tournament | 9:13 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
To all BYU Basketball fans: please stop embarrassing the MWC. Your team has not won a Tournament Game in almost 20 years. If you want national respect the formula is simple. Tourny Victories equal respect. 20 years is a long, long, long, long, (did I mention long) time not to have won a single Tourny Game.
John Lambert | 9:19 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
The Deseret News should stop publishing stories about BYU basketball until BYU wins at least one Tournament Game. It brings down the reputation of the MWC to not have won a Tournament Game in almost 20 years.

Maybe the solution is for the MWC to make BYU play in the WAC for basketball. It would certainly help the MWC reputation and strength.
Go Cougs | 9:28 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Embarrassing the MWC? What's more embarrassing - losing to SW Baptist or losing to one of the top 64 teams in the country in the NCAA tournament? Since SW Baptist can NEVER be in the tournament since they're, what, D-10?, I'll take the tourney losses! Yes, I would love to see us finally break through this year, but Ute fans (and Aggie fans too...I know you're in here somewhere) should drop that argument post-haste! Aggies haven't fared much better in the NCAA tournament! And what have the Utes done since their run to the title game?
re: NCAA Tournament | 9:41 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
hollow advice coming from a fan of a team that isn't even good enough to get to the tournament anymore.

The DN should block all comments from fans whose teams have had losing conference records the last 3 seasons.
Go Utes | 9:44 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
"And what have the Utes done since their run to the title game?"

We have been to the Tournament several times and been to the sweet sixteen a couple of times and the final eight.

What has BYU done since 1991? Nothing. No Tourny Wins. Nada.

Unfortunately for BYU, Tournament wins are the only thing that matters as far as garnering National Respect. I really hope BYU wins a Tournament Game this year. It would help our conference strength ranking. Less bashing and more support for our MWC teams.
To Go Cougs | 9:49 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
If I had to pick, I would definitely say that not winning a Tourny Game in almost 20 years would take the cake. It really is a hideous statistic to have hanging around your neck.
Sitting Just About Right | 10:26 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
BYU played the AP/Coaches number #4 team (Wake) down to the final minute and #20/16 team down to the final second. In my mind that means the Cougs are probably a #20-25 team right now but the voters won't give them quite the same benefit of the doubt I will. The voters have them #44 and 33.

Our two biggest problems that need to be addressed in conference are our inability to hit big shots and free throws in the final minute or two and Cummards unexplainable disappearance against big competition.

Conference prediction - we will split with SDSU, UNLV, and Utah. Losing 3 - or 4 conference games if UNLV sweeps both games. We will make it to the finals of the MWC tourney to lose again to UNLV. But 8 or 9 losses will still be enough to get us into the dance as a low seed - where we will make it 21 years in a row without a win against some long, athletic team. Cummard and Tavernari will end up with around 18.0 per game but Fredette will explode in conference play and average 23 to be named co-mvp with Winky.
McKay | 10:47 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
I know it's splitting hairs but BYUs last tourney win was in 93, they beat SMU, and in 91 they beat Virginia... so that is 15 years ago, not 20, regardless of when it was, it was a long time ago and is time for BYU to put all this to rest and win a couple tourney games.
Re: Go Utes, heaven forbid you let FACTS get in your way....since the title run in 98, the Utes have lost in the first round 1 time, made it to the round of 32 3 times and the sweet 16 1 time, and no elite 8 appearances like you say...
Disappointment | 10:54 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Not winning an NCAA tourney game is a disappointment. Not making it to the tournament is a failure.

Given the choice, 99% of fans would rather see their team lose a first-round NCAA tournament game, than not get into the Big Dance at all.

Apparently, Utah fans disagree.

They'd rather win a game in the BCI.
UNLV | 11:09 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
BYU Who? We have your number every March.
Yoot fans | 11:19 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
livin' in past glory. Different year, different players, different coaches. Live in the present or are you still bragging on Bill "The hill" McGill one of your great "scholar-athletes"?
CALBLUE | 1:16 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Hey UNLV: Yes you have won all the tournament games played where? O yes, at UNLV. Lets pay the tournament in Provo or even Salt Lake City, have a few homers for refs and see where UNLV ends up in the MWC Tourny.
UNLV invitational farce | 2:03 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Win a game in Provo, then the Rebels have something to brag about.

If the Rebels can't win the regular season championship, and have to rely on homecourt advantage in the MWC tournament to steal a tournament championship, their "championships" will always be preceded by an asterisk.

In this way, the MWC isn't so much different than the BCS. Conducting a fair tournament is irrelevant; the only thing that matters is $$$.
UNLV Rebel | 2:20 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Hey BYU fans, here are two interesting statistics:

BYU Football 1-21 against top 25 ranked teams

BYU Basketball hasn't won a Tournament game since 1992

It would really be hard for me to root for a program with those two massively embarassing statistics hanging around your necks.
Re:UNLV BARNEY REBEL | 4:33 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Barney?

Your not even the best team in Nevada!

Keep your night job sweeping the floors of the Casino, because barney rebel tickets are not worth the investment!
OKlahoma Garth | 4:44 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
I wood like to give a nice firm Oklahoma hand slobber to BYU. They are such great hockey players! but the point is UNLV stands for unkept.newts.licking.very delicious Bk Whoppers! But the pointier point is that unkept newts couldn't afford such pricey burgers! I mean that's pretty ridiculous right? I mean who wouldn't just buy a great burger for a little hobo homeless newt? crazy right?! Jazz Rule!
re: UNLV Rebel | 4:49 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Hey rebel fans, here are two interesting facts:

rebels don't have the guts to play outside of vegas come conference tourny time, if so, they would not have any success in march.

rebel football, can you say bowl-LESS, you should be abel to, because that is what it is. No bowl invites gives you no voice in trash talking, NONE. Go find a fan from lets say, a high school team to trash talk with. But be careful, they just might be able to beat the good ole' rebel pigskin teams.

rebel football is the the true "massively embarrassing" program hanging around any neck. (with one and only one exceptiion when they beat the utes last year for their only win, 27-0, ouch!!!!!!!!).
D Bone Sam | 6:53 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Ute fans are so stupid. How much did the Utes beat Coug basketball team by in the last 2 years? You don't hear me saying garbage about your football team, for the same reason you should all keep your mouths shut about basketball.
UNLV | 11:55 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
I guess I missed the part where we decide that the tournament is played in Vegas. That may have been the dumbest comment I have ever seen.
UNLV Grad | 1:00 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
BYU fans need to keep quite until they when a Tournament Game. It has been almost 20 years since BYU has won a Tournament Game. Tournament victories are really the only way to earn National Respect. Something BYU hasn't had in almost 20 years.

P.S. BYU's Football team is 1-21 against ranked teams. That is a very shameful statistic and brings down the reputation of the MWC.
re: UNLV Grad | 2:46 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
false advertising; more than likely scamwow is still working on that 8th grade diploma.
Zelph, the Sport Guru | 5:19 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Why all the hate? BYU and Utah both need to do well so the MWC can get some respect.

Props to Utah for there great football team and basketball teams. Utah has done a great deal to gain respect for the MWC.

Props to BYU for having some great football teams in the past and for playing some pretty decent pre-Tournament basketball.

Let's spread the love, not the hate. Koombaya.
John Lambert | 5:34 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
re: UNLV Grad,

How was scamwow's comment false advertising? BYU really is 1-21 against ranked teams. BYU basketball team really hasn't won a Tourney Game in almost 20 years.

If your going to post that someone was being false, at least tell us how.

Waiting for your answer, homeslice.
