Only in Utah! However, it's really too bad that there are a lot of Mormon Utahans that don't adhere to the Book of Mormon teachings - they give Mormons a bad name. Those Mormons living outside of so called "Zion" think that Utahans are living in la-la land with big hair, and that "you're so sweet" and "oh my heck" mentality. Outsiders make fun of you!
Re: EM | 6:46 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Don't get me wrong, I hate the "holier than thou" Mormons as much as the next guy, but to paint all Mormons in Utah with the same brush is stupid.
Re: EM | 6:49 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Yeah! -- those 90% are giving the rest of us a bad name.

I thought this was an article about street names. Not holier than thou stuff.

Anyway, don't forget Arizona, where I live on a street named after a prophet and in a town named after an apostle (Moses Thatcher).

...are we supposed to care that outsiders make fun of us? Not exactly a sharp criticism, when you look at the state of the world today. I'd much rather be mocked for being "weird" than live the way so many people these days live their lives.

Thank you Sarah Nichole. I love living in Utah. For those that think we live in la la land..... did it ever occur to you that we know as well as anyone the mentality of mormons outside of Utah and chose to speak and think and act the way we do despite you looking down your nose at us. I will take my lifestyle over the worlds any day. And it appears that many from other states will too. It's getting crowded here.

There is a Nimrod Avenue down the street from my house.

This is the most 'tacky' thing I've ever seen, and believe me, I've seen plenty of 'tacky'.

I live out side of Utah and once belive that Member's in Utah were stuckup till I went there to visit my Doughter and found out difforent. 99% of LDS members try to live according to our teachings, love one anather and respect others. It is the 1% that make the rest of us look bad. I have a quit form the Walt Disney Move Pollyanna, "When you look for the bad in people you will find it" and that seams to be what all you na sayers are doing. You look at our humen short commings in stead of the good in us. I too would rather be a weard member then to live the live most of the world lives. If you look just at what the Bible says then you are steel live contry to God's teachings. Most if not all of what we teach can be found in the Bible if you just look for it.

Did you read the article? "Only in Utah"?? it listed other states as well. You seem like the type of person that looked at the title and saw a chance to try and bash on Mormons.
Anonymous | 10:23 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Sea gulls are sometimes called Mormon bombers . Since the gull is the state bird , I think this could be a violation of the establishment clause of the First Amendment .

IN SANTA CLARITA,CALIF.THERE IS A KOLOB CANYON DR.

um, SFCRET DENNIS,
Do you really spell like that or are you just trying to be funny? It looks like you spell words on how they sound. Anyway no problem, I was just wondering?????

Interesting article. I have seen many names attached to Mormonism while on road trips.

I am amazed that so much of the Deseret News draws attacks from people about The Church. I live in the bible belt of the southern USA. It is an honor and pleasure to say that most of my friends are not members of the church and that they honor and respect my beliefs and choose not to bash or belittle me in any way. There is common respect for me and I have the same respect for them. When a national headline about the Mormons reaches our area I am given the chance to set the record straight because the news always distorts. My work associates accept my explanations readily and do not judge me because my beliefs differ from theirs. If you are going to live in an area where you are in the minority or an outsider, you do yourself a great service by being happy to be there and not trying to complain or find fault. This is good adivce I was given over 20 years ago. It has contributed greatly to my own happiness.
Mormon Bombers | 10:50 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Yes, seagulls definitely are Mormon bombers! Those seagull birds are deliberate about what they do as well. They actually look down from the sky, aim right and directly above a persons head. I have seen them in full action with my own eyes and the outcome is always devastating.
Gidgidoni | 10:52 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
As long as I don't live on Amalikiah Avenue, Shiz Street or Korihor Circle I'd be pleased to live on a street named after someone from the Book of Mormon. Oh, and I forgot to include Gadianton cul de sac.
Jambo | 11:28 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
I like the street directly south of the Jordan River Temple is called "Y Worry Lane"
Henry Drummond | 12:30 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
It isn't hard to name a new street. Where I live my neighbor came up with the names and just casually walked around the sub-division to ask anyone if they had objections. I think it would be fun to name a street after Hillary Clinton and see what that gets started.

Mormonism has a significant effect on the naming of locations throughout the west. This is primarily due to the fact that Mormons were a major influence in settling the west. Mormon settlements stretched from San Bernadino near LA all the way to southern Alberta. It was members of the church who worked for John Sutter outside of Sacramento and discovered gold in 1848. It is no wonder you find Mormon influence throughout the west. For example, in Stockton, CA, there is a rail yard operated by the BNSF railway known as Mormon Yard.

Now, naming a subdivision after leaders in the Book of Mormon is going a little far. I don't see it as trying to create a "holier than thou" environment, but it certainly is a tacky marketing method to attract members of the church (unfortunately, those attracted to this sort of marketing often come off with this sort of "holier than thou" attitude). I have a hard time with this sort of marketing - I don't see it any better than the money changers in the temple.

I would like to see a Rameumptom Way for those of us that have been particularly blessed.

I have lived most of my life outside the United States but when I arrived I noticed that many American streets are named after impersonal objects like trees or they are simply numbered. I wondered why there weren't many streets named after scientists, poets, or philosophers as is the custom in most of Europe. I find the naming of streets after Book of Mormon personalities and locations to be refreshingly human. One doesn't have to be a Mormon or even a person of faith to appreciate the history behind these names.

I think all the trendy traffic roundabouts should be named for politicians.

Where is Zelph Lane? Hoffman Circle? Adam-God Way? White Salamander Road? Book of the Dead Fraud Lane? Principal Ancestor of the Lamanites Highway?

I am a member of the Lilburn Stake and work on Boggs Road. I guess that is the opposite of BOM names

LOL. Too bad so few people have any clue what you're referring to.

Anonymous @ 2:24, maybe those streets are near Plagerism Ln, Spaulding Manuscript Ct. and A view of the Hebrews Blvd...right up from More Crack Pot Theories Ave. Nice try though.

I think King Benjamin would turn over in his grave if he saw the houses in King Benjamin's Court, but King Noah could probably relate. Oh yah, I almost forgot, the target market wouldn't buy if it were named after King Noah.

You and I are on the exact same page. I've driven past that subdivision and thought "King Noah's Court" would be a much better description than "King Benjamin's Court." Those houses are enormous.

Don't forget in Iowa their is a small High School whose name is called the Saints. I had a friend who went their. She was the only LDS person that she knew of that went there. It is near Mt. Pisgath, IA(sp sorry) which is on the Mormon Trail.

Whats in a Name? | 4:13 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
If Street signs are named BOM names, I have got a friend that I know of facebook and she is the oldest in her family of 12 children, all of them begin with bible or BOM names, like Elizabeth, Tabatha, Nephi, Moroni, Ammon, I think it is quite cool but pretty soon you will run out of names, The daughter still carrys on the tradation in her family as she and her husband start their own family, It is not bad as having a mom named Jill and haveing her little boy named jack, He will get teasewd the rest of his life for havving his parents do that to him,

There is a town in Iowa named Lamoni, in case anyone is interested.
Running Fish | 6:26 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
If I remember right, the name of the street my wife and I lived on in Taylorsville years ago was "Sunstone Avenue." That town in Iowa is Lamoni, and I believe that many of its residents are affiliated with what was knows as the Reorganized Church.

The "true keystone" of the Utah LDS church is the D&C/PoGP.

The "true keystone" of The Church of Jesus Christ (whq: Monongahela, PA) is The KJV only and the BOM only.

P.S. There is a Moroni Manufacturing Company located somewhere in Italy. I have seen their color ads in a fastener trade magazine.

Carlo Caroli | 7:46 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Bickertonite from Michigan, Moroni, is a common Roman Jewish last name, in case anyone wants to know. Ciao from Carlo in Missouri. Check the Rome, Italy White pages.

On my mission part of which included Barbados and St Vincent in the early 80s there was an Adam-Ondi-Omen street and a house named after the church. Some houses have names instead of addresses. There was a Alma House and a Stripling Warriors but I think that got dropped later.
