Re: Utah boy 5:33 | 6:44 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
You made reference to BYU losing at least three and Utah two...BYU losing three certainly may be a possibility, but you certainly are bullish picking Utah to win 11 games. Who do they have waiting in the wings at skill positions to take over?

BYU is coming back with Hall (spare me the interception jokes cus he is gonna eat Utah for lunch next year), Unga, Pitta, Collie, Jacobson all on offense...can you spell L-O-A-D-E-D on offense? The defense was supposed to have a down year this year, and they still managed ten wins and a couple of shutouts. Cougar fans are crossing their fingers they land Manti Te'o and if they do look out. He's a legitimate game breaker. All in all...very optimistic about BYU's chances to recapture the Mountain West title.

If BYU happens to pull off a win against Oklahoma all the better...but even a close loss that early in the season won't sink their BCS chances if they take care of business the rest of the way. Their home schedule for conference games is extremely favorable.

Just my opinion.
dkn | 6:43 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
BYU fans have been fooled by Holmoe and Mendenhall that they have done a wonderful job for 4 seasons because of their wins. They still have not beat a national power or a ranked team in those 4 years. But all BYU fans think they are awesome and have done a great job. Look at the teams they have played. The only semi good teams that they have played they have been beaten by. Next year will prove this theory. Oklahoma 66 BYU 21. FSU 35 BYU 17. 0 and 2 to start off the year. Year over!!
Bring It | 6:47 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
Excited about the schedule, and I guess I'm taking a page from Witt's playbook that "one loss does not break a season." So, if you're going to lose, do it early...voters don't seem to remember much a month later if you're putting a good season together.

Congrats to Utah...now kindly step aside.

Did BYU dump ASU to get the Oklahoma game? And did ASU return the favor by dumping BYU in 2011? If so, I'm not so sure it was worth it. Priorities might be mixed up. Just asking.
Ute Fans are Hypocrites | 6:51 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
You Ute fans are a bunch of hypocrites.

First you're whining that Cougar fans aren't supporting Utah in the BCS bowl game...now you want to bash on the Cougars for helping bring more national attention to the MWC? What's it gonna be, Ute fans?!

I agree that BYU's schedule looks intimidating and they probably won't win every game, but why can't you guys practice what you preach and support OUR team playing Oklahoma just like we supported YOUR team playing Alabama?

I'm all for smack-talk when we play each other, but until then, give some support!

How did ASU feel about cancelling their two games against BYU? Did BYU dump them becasue a "prettier girl" came along? No way to treat an old girlfriend.

This schedule is going to be tough....It actually makes me very nervous..... It's VERY possible to go 6-6 next year, especially if they continue to play the way they did the last 6 games.....

Come on Cougar fans, Utah deserves all of the credit right now. They have been to 2 BCS bowl games. I love that the MWC is starting to get some reconigtion. BYU PLEASE GET SOME GOOD DEFENDERS NEXT YEAR TO GO WITH OUR OFFENSE. That means speed & agility, not the nickle package with average speed. Congrats Utes, you deserve it. Go MWC next year. Play the tough teams even if you win some and lose some.

The problem with this schedule is the Cougs have very rarely won the big game. Bronco Mendenhall did a great job of turning the team around into a winning team, but they still can't win the big one. They don't seem to play with any heart like Utah does game in and game out. With out a good change with the defense the Cougs will lose to 3 of their 4 non-conference games. They will beat Utah though because it is at home and they haven't lost at home for 3 years.
Anonymous | 8:34 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
A BYU win over Ok and Florida State would remind the football world that the Utah win was no fluke. a loss isn't going to hurt much becasue it will be expected. Very very possible BYU wins one or both. Remember @1 Miami losing in the first game of the year to BYU. BYU usually plays well early in the season and at home. This is a good time to schedule it and the best part is that it will be on national TV and not the mtn.

I was at the Weber game up in RES.. and the Utes were pathetic. They were lucky to walk away with a win. And the New Mexico game? again they were lucky. But the blind to the truth yewts (who have wondered who BYU played in 1984) have spent the past week crying about a National Championship just because they are undefeated. Lucky games in a weak schedule.. sounds like what they've cried about for 24 years. Maybe they should schedule some teams like the Y.

WE still know the kids on the hill are still the little brothers.. the schedule says so.

A sincere congrats to BYU on your 2009 schedule. Schedules like this with hopefully alot of W's creates national respect for our conference. It would really help if the entire conference would quit scheduling cupcakes. No more high school teams from Iowa, Northern Arizona, or Weber County. As for Utah St. once every four years is good enough. Who cares about the stupid Beehive Boot anyway? Does anyone even know where its at anyway? Retire it or donate it to D.I. or something. Lets focus as a state on increasing the exposure of our football prowess. And that can only happen by beating so called "big boys" (yeah right) on the national scene.

So can anyone tell me why they dumped Arizona State? I was really looking forward to those two games in Tempe and Provo. Rather see ASU than Tulane or USU any day.

Truth you are a dreamer. Now to be totally serious. Utah IS King of the Mountain West Conference until rightfuly displaced by another team. We'll see if that happens next year. Until then show some respect for Utah. It has been rightfully earned.

Strategy Change 2009 | 9:46 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
If we want some wins lets take some lessons who are having success. All season long I would hear how big our BYU offensive and defensive lines were, outweighing our opponents lines by a wide margin. What did we learn? We need SPEED! Our linemen were schooled by smaller teams with fast guys. In particular I remember the game against Utah. Having BIG linemen doesn't mean their good. As a minimum it just means their FAT. I look at our linemen when I watch BYU play on TV. Sadly they just remind me of all my fat uncles...big bellies hangin' over their pants. Bronco !! Heads Up !! Lets get some guys who are fit and FAST!! I'll bet we'll have better success if you can just do that one thing!

Kudos to the Y for scheduling a legit season. I hope they win them all except against the Utes.

Good luck to you next year.
My 2 cents | 10:48 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
BYU will doubtlessly play their guts out against Oklahoma which will give them a chance to win. Florida State will be a good game, but they will be a beatable team at home. Tulane and Utah St. should be wins, and the home-road conference schedule next year is in BYU's favor. 12-1 is very possible and 13-0 could even happen with a miracle win in the season opener.

The Offense will have to break in a new line but the skill players are 3 year starters, so the offense will still be I would say about the same as this year, which isn't too bad. I don't see it improving, but I don't see it losing steam. The Defense can only improve. It's not often 1 side of the ball looses 8 starters! This time it only looses 3 and we also bring in a couple new good JC recruits. The cougs can be way good next year!

Why are there so many utah fans commenting on this page? I sense a major inferiority complex.

The last thing I want to do is read an article about utah football, let alone make stupid comments about it, like those that have made-up insulting slogans for next years' BYU t-shirt.

I guess even when they win the Sugar Bowl they know they are the second best school in the state.

8-4 | 11:42 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
Amen! I am a Y fan, 0-3 will be what happens. BYU has to be the slowest team in the country! We have no Defense and will be breaking in a new O-line. OU and FSU will tear us apart with their speed. We can only hope for the best.
Oh, and by the way, the "priority list" is a joke!!! Bronco needs to get rid of that and the stupid Haka. I don't know of very many Coaches who try and fire up the other team before the opening kickoff! Why?
Cougar Man | 12:01 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Offense
With McKay Jacobson and Austin Collie, you couldn't ask for a better receiving corps. Throw in Dennis Pitta and Harvey Unga (yes, he's actually a decent mid-field receiver) and the Cougars look pretty good. If we can get Manase Tonga back, we should actually have a pretty awesome offense (that guy is a fireball). After Chambers and Kariya mature a bit in the off-season, we're looking at a pretty stacked offense, one that could give Oklahoma a run for its money.

Defense
Yes, it was a tough season from TCU on out, but our guys did pitch back to back shutouts. I think our boys will be a lot better next year after having played together for a season. I'm betting our offense is going to be more dominant, but our defense should be decent.

Will we finish 13-0? Maybe. It's very likely that the Cougars will lose a game or two, but you never know. Look at Utah; they didn't dominate every game, but they pulled out the "W" every time, and that's what counts. C'mon ESPN naysayers, start tootin' your horns and trash-talkin' the MWC!!!
Henry Drummond | 12:21 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Now now. We must remember that we need our cousins at the School Down South to beat up on these big name teams so Utah can look even more brilliant when we clobber them in Provo.

Actually this is really what BYU needs to do if they want to be serious contenders on the national scene. Cleaning up on North Central Iowa Community College doesn't impress people as much as rolling a big name team like ... oh let's just pick a name out of the air ... the Alabama Crimson Tide. :-)

BYU could | 12:27 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
learn a few things from OK. Like how to attack a spread offense and how to be a lot more creative on offense. BYU could effectively run a 3 tight end offense occasionally like OK.

I think the primary problems are in coaching and recruiting. The prevent defense is useless against a spread offense. The BYU offense is way too predictable and that is not Hall's fault. The offensive play calling lacks adaptation to the weaknesses of other teams.

BYUs record will improve when they recruit some defensive speed and do a much better job of adjusting during games.
psychic | 12:31 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
I'm glad everyone knows the future of BYU football 09. Now I don't have to watch because I already know what's up from the smarties on the msg boards.

If anyone had said at the beg of Utah's season that they would have gone undefeated and clobbered Alabama I woulda thought they were crazy. So, until BYU PLAYS these teams, maybe let's just say, "good scheduling."
We needed you, BYU... | 12:48 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
...to win your bowl game against Arizona for the MWC. You didn't come through.

Beating Oklahoma on a neutral field would more than make up for it.

Beating Tulane and FSU? Not so much. That's about like UNLV beating Arizona State and Iowa State this year. Yawn.

Still, when you are 1-20 versus ranked teams over the last umpteen years, you'll take whatever you can get.
Great schedule | 7:40 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
I love the 2009 schedule! Great job all around on this one. Should be a lot of fun to watch.

Little Brother Syndrome is strong today in Salt Lake with all of the comments from UofU fans. Their pathetic nature is so obvious when their team ends the season undefeated and they continue to read and comment on an article about another team's schedule that has nothing at all to do with their team. Sad really.

interesting | 7:58 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
I find it interesting that prognosticators on this board are suggesting BYU with 4-5 losses and playing in the Las Vegas Bowl. For those that actually know the bowl alignments being picked for Vegas - that means they were the top choice (likely conference champions). Las Vegas has the first choice of conference teams unless a team is selected for a BCS game. First choice is usually the highest finishing team in a conference. So if you are a team from the MWC going to Las Vegas is not an insult. It is an accomplishment. Sure it may not be the best bowl game or have a great match up but it is where the best of the MWC is supposed to be selected to go to.
Reality | 8:32 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
1. Wow - no one can cry "cupcake schedule" next season!

2. Yes BYU is loaded on offense. BUT it made no difference this season whenever Hall was under serious pressure. And that was with perhaps the most veteran line in history. My biggest concern is what will happen with a brand new line against even BETTER pressure in OU, FSU, TCU and Utah.

3. The defense will inevitably be better. A healthy So'to, increased speed at corner (JC transfer), better athletes at safety (Pendleton), and an offseason of experience will only help. If a miracle drops in our lap (Teo), this d could actually be special not just good.

4. OU loses its all-american QB, TE and several other key players. I actually expect Florida State to field a better overall team. Utah will be very good but not great - too many losses esp at QB. I think TCU will actually be the best team on our schedule.

5. Well, if you are going to make this kind of a schedule I guess the year to do it is when we have almost the entire defense and skill players returning. O-line play is really the key.
Boise fan | 8:54 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Assuming Bradford stays at OU and BYU can find nothing better than Max Hall we can safely predict 59-10 in favor of OU. OU has scored over 60 points in 5 straight games with far better opponents than BYU. We played 3 good teams in 08 and lost to all of them. Max had horrible games in all of those losses. And I don't see why his 3rd year as starting qb should be any different than his second year of starting.
This year we will have an all new offensive line. Unless there are big changes that none of us know about, I can see no logical reason to expect a win against OU or FSU.
Gorum the Old | 8:56 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Can BYU run the tables in 2009? Yes.
Will they? Threre is only one way to find out, and that won't happen for at least 9 more months.

Why can they win?

1) The recieving corps. They are one of, and possibly the best sets of recievers in the nation(assuming Austin Collie returns). They return Collie who led all recievers with 1538 yards and had 15 TDs. Pitta had 1083 yards and 6 TDs. George, Pitta's back up also has 6 TDs. Among those competing to replace Reed is McKay Jacobson who had 547 yds as a true freshman and averaged 19.5 yards per catch.
BYU's RB & FB are also recieving threats. Unga had 309 recieving yards in 2008, and 655 in 2007. Tonga had 248 yards in 2007.

2)The O-line will be better than most people think. Of the 4 new starters, 3 of them have been previous starters.

3) Schedule: Of the 4 ranked teams that BYU will be playing, 3 of them will be at home.

Reasons to worry:

1) New O-line. Offencive lines neeed some time to "gel".

2) Which BYU Defence will show up next year?

What's Utah's '09 Schedule? | 10:00 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Perhaps Utes should spend less time speculating about BYU's '09 season and more time thinking about how to rebuild an offense that's going to be shredded by graduation.
RE: Crimson Club and 8-4 | 10:01 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
and all your blog buddies. Please read this really slow. I know it might be hard for you to understand but try, try, try. Before your nap repeat this phrase over and over: "The Quest for Perfection is not about football."

Now get along little boy and repeat that phrase before your nap and before your bedtime.

Congrats to your Utes on an undefeated season. They should be number 1. Now act like it.
