Excuse me, but I thought the top issue [for Utahns and other uber religious people] is protecting the privilege of religious expression? So, when does filthy lucre become more important than God?

Remember the biblical scripture in Matthew 6:24?: "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."

When Mormons [representing the "One and Only True Church of God" and accounts for ~70% of the population of Utah] state their preference of Money over God, it makes me wonder what the heck is going on?

What's wrong with this picture?

For these public works programs they should put all welfare receipents at the top of the list of workers. Make them earn some of their benefits and repay the taxpayers with some kind or responsible reperations. But what Gov Huntsmans idea of public works is to hand it out to those already working and his friendly neighborhood developers and business partners. The idea of public works is to put the unemployed to work on short term projects to get the economy going. Put the public works under the direction of Work Force Services and give them something to do besides harass workers with complaints about their employers illegal actions.

Looking at the home page of desnews this morning, an more appropriate headline would be 'utahns focus on sports'. The results of the world junior hockey championships didn't make front page, however....

Too bad that back home the attorney general who sees a conspiracy in every corner can't focus on the economy.

At 12:44 in the morning, that is the best you could come up with? Slamming Mormons? Someone must have really offended you at some point in time for you to want to put the blame on Mormons for everything. Budget concerns; how families will be able to provide for themselves; how we all might be able to help one another and those who have less; these are issues that concern everyone of all beliefs. What about "those who serve others are serving me"? Respecting one another and what they believe in is a two way street. Try it sometime. You might learn to like it.

At least they are at it. I trust Rep. Chaffetz more than the others.

Someone needs to tackle the new law on lead and used children's clothing. Rumor says it will cause the D.I. not to sell children's clothes and things.

Legal Immigration would be a good thing to fix.

The Feds need to cut spending -- why not start with giving the states more freedom to decide how to best educate their children and scrap everything to do with NCLB. It's a $ pit anyway and doesn't serve the good of students anywhere.

Without an economy that can support jobs as well as credit flowing again from the banks everything else comes to a stand still. When you are out of a job the main focus of your attention is finding a new job and that pretty much consumes most of your attention. Truly, whether you are a democrat or a republican the focus is the economy and you have to hope that Obama can at least stabilize the ship and start the process of a growing economy again. I don't expect any quick fix to this mess but at least to stop the bleeding and stabilize the patient would be a good start for 2009.
It's so cute..... | 10:58 a.m. Jan. 6, 2009
when liberals try to quote scripture.

Using God, Jesus and the scriptures are just another tool for liberals to try to score cheap politcal points. Save it Paperboy, your just embarrassing yourself.

Blame the Mormons. Right, Paperboy?
Is Paperboy a nickname or is that what you deliver in the morning before you head out to the 6th grade?
Blame the Mormons. | 11:26 a.m. Jan. 6, 2009
Utahns focus on their Mormon economy through Utah's Outta Control "Magic Comedy" Free Dinner n Lunch Show?. I just knew it - "Blame the Mormons". It's all their fault.

public works needs to get out more -- all who sign up for what used to be called welfare have to do so at the office of workforce services -- the first thing they do is fill out job qualifications, and sit down wth a counselor, discuss education and child care, if there is work, they have to take it or explain why.
Sorry Utah | 5:11 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
You get more of the same for the next 4 years. You did not want to vote out the "R" party, in this last election, in fact were once again the most pro Republican state in the union, so you will just have to live with what your party has dealt you. There will be no stimulus or bailout for you, as you seem to be in good shape. Thats a declaration that should be made to the reddest state in the union. Possibly if there are any funds left when we get through spending for others you may see a slight relief. Thats what should happen, but watch the Hatch's and Bennett's line up with their dirty hands out for a handout. I just wish I had more power, because that is the way it would be if I did. Utah would be #50 on the list.
bush loves NCLB | 8:20 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
I find it interesting Bishop and Chaffetz are so anti No Child's Behind Left because without it Bush would not have won in 2000; few GOP presidents have had education agenda (Reagan wanted to close Dept. of Education) so Bush knew to win in 2000, he would need to be a NEW REPUBLICAN, and that is what he has the courage to be; Bishop and Chaffetz would both be good public school teachers.
