Maybe puberty metabolisms make for warmer bodies. Seriously. We joke about age and menopause causing changes in body temperature, why not the same for teens?

shoveling a foot of snow in subero temperatures will probably have the reverse effect on kids bundling up when walking a block to school.

if anything, they'll be sporting flip flops next time.

This made me laugh. When I was a teenager in the Northwest over 40 years ago, I refused to wear boots although we had rain six months out of the year. I told my mother they didn't look good over my shoes, which I ruined by constantly getting them wet. When my children were growing up and I had to leave for work before they left for school, unbeknown to me one of them ran from our home to the middle school (about a block away) without a coat with the lame excuse "I don't have room to take it." I see my children telling their children they may not wear shorts to school in the winter.

To a teenager, it is all about the costume and the look. Some things never change. Ha ha!

I can empathize with Marjorie. My son wore bermuda shorts to school his senior year all winter.

But it isn't just the kids. Even many Utah adults show an aversion to sensible winter clothing.

I'm born and bred Utahn, and only wear a coat if I anticipate being outdoors for more than a few minutes. otherwise, I don't want to bother with the hassle of coats and mittens.

Most Junior and Senior High students in Utah are required to share their lockers with another student. You can barely fit all your books in these lockers, let alone two big winter coats.

I live in utah and I'm a senior in high school, it was -4 degrees last week and i saw some stupid freshman wearing shorts and a t-shirt with no coat or anything!

so i agree with the "they have to have their look" concept. Personally if its below 50 you need to wear pants and at least a sweater! And no flip flops in winter!

What kind of article is this, who cares what other people wear? If you are comfortable and not cold then should it really matter? I wear shorts year round, but I work inside and I am rarely outside for extended periods of time. If more people worried about themselves and didn't judge others, there would be fewer problems in the world.

I wonder if the reason the kids don't wear warm clothes is because the schools are so warm that they get too hot. I long ago quit getting my kids sweaters to wear to school. They will not be comfortable.
I grew up in Logan and learned to always at least have a coat with me in the car when I went someplace. Our neighbor once drove her husband to work in a bathrobe and slippers and was terribly embarrassed, not to say uncomfortable, when she slid off the road and had to wait for help. My neighbors all recognize me when I am out walking in the morning because of my dog. The scarf, mask, coat, boots, hat and gloves makes it difficult to identify me.
