High school golf: 2008 All-State golf teams

if we could only get the PGA Utah to wake up and have the tourney off the 40 degree 40 MPH winds and come down and play real golf.......
St. George from November thru March. If you think
any high school kid can get a tee time or afford
the winter rate green fees you are sadly mistaken.
It gets dark around 5:00. Any high school golfer
in northern Utah has about the same eight months
(April thru October) to hone their skills.
Maybe some of the open enrollment schools up
north should use some of their football scholarships
to get some better golfers.
But please don't lay claim to having the best golfers or teams in the state. I was at Soldier Hollow this year for both days of 5A and both days of 4A. Conditions were basically identical for both tournaments. Dixie's score of 622 would have placed them in a tie for 10th in the 5A and the 4A medalist from Dixie would have finished in a 4 way tie for 18th. Go to uhsaa.org and click on boys golf
for the results. Okay, so the St. George schools have the good weather, but they are at a disadvantage in the summer due to long travel to UJGA events where the top juniors compete. I think the most impressive item about Dixie Golf is the kids that are currently playing for BYU. There are only a handful of schalrships given each year by the 4 year colleges. Dixie had 3 kids receive one.The hotbed of high school golf is in Weber and Davis counties. Fremont, Syracuse, etc. However, Lone Peak rolled over everyone.
FIRST: Where was "check the facts Jack" hiding out during the State Tournament? I was working at Soldier Hollow during both tournaments and the conditions during the 4A tournament in the late mornings and all of the afternoons were much worse than anytime during the 5A tournament. I also know the pin positions in the 4A tournament were more difficult than during the 5A. The talent in the 5A class is certainly deeper but you can't compare results as a fair comparison because the conditions were different. Play during both days of the 4A tournament were substantially delayed in the morning due to frost in the greens. In 2007 conditions were comparable but not in 2008.
SECOND: Don't be too impressed with the scholarships offered to the three Dixie boys at BYU - hard pressed to call the financial aid they receive as a "scholarship".
THIRD: As for the case of Nic Booth, selections are based on state scores and the average of their 4 or 5 low region scores adjusted for course ratings, not how a player places at region.
