It's so simple

It's called supply and demand.
When their is a surplus (lots of stuff) prices go down. When the demand increases (not enough stuff) prices go up.
Got that liberals?

A telling comment

"Many grocery STAPLES on the list were unchanged since our last shopping spree in early December, including milk, bread, diapers, orange juice, OREOS and bananas."

According to my Webster's dictionary, a staple is defined as "a basic or necessary item or food". And here it is, in the Deseret News: Oreos are a staple. Tell me, what's basic or necessary about Oreos? No doubt they are quite yummy, but necessary?

It's thinking like this that's helped to cause the obesity epidemic we have in this country.

Re. So Simple

Yes us liberals have got that. Now one thing I want you conseratives to take note of. The lying, deciet, thievery, and greedy ways are over now and your group knows it, so all of you better be prepared to live differently in the future. You will no longer be rewarded for stealing, in fact you will be done away with in this new administration, replaced by people interested in it's citizens. Have you got that?

Eggs and liberals

Two comments - first of all, there's so much competition that greed isn't really a factor in groceries and other basics - nobody can charge much more than anybody else. And profit isn't the enemy - it's what draws more producers into the marketplace, assuring an adequate supply. Read a bit of Thomas Sowell, it won't hurt I promise.

Second - where the heck did they find eggs for .86 around here??? I've been paying 1.20-1.29 after shopping every ad!

Yea! take that Re: so simple

There's a new sheriff in town. and he'll be conducting all the stealing, lying, and cheating now. Just remember, it's for the children. God bless you gullible liberals.

@ Re. So Simple

Yes, and the current governor of Illinois represents your ilk so well. And interesting that Obama won his first term as Illinois senator after digging into and publicizing the personal divorce records of his opposition.

Yes, I'd say the country is in for a really wild ride the next four years. I believe that in the dictionary under "ruthless" you will find the definition: "Illinois politician." Might be found under "greedy" and "corrupt" too.

One Thing To Remember

The current Gov of Illinois does not represent Democratic values, he more readily represents the political and business mentality that has represented us in the top office of this country the past 8 years and in the Senate and Congress for the past 20 years. But inspite of the corruption and deciet of recent past we will see a change from the good ole boy politics in 2 weeks. Don't under estimate the will of the U.S. citizens, because if you do you will be out in the street like the Bush-Wacker and slick Dick. The financial and big business leaders are next, so watch out if your one of them. The house cleaning has begun.

La La Land

Idealism reigns supreme on the DNews comment board. There sure is a lot of "hope" in what is going to happen over the next couple of months. Keep in mind that Obama's change meant bringing back mostly Clinton era officials. Another one was annoucned today. Gee, the Clintons didn't play any dirty politics or political favors, did they?
I like Obama. I think he'll do a better job over the next couple of years than did Bush over his last 4 years, but to think that he will have nothing to do with politics as usual is crazy. Obama is a Chicago area politician. NO ONE rises up through the ranks in Chicago without paying his or her dues, i.e., taking part in dirty politics. Can he separate himself from Chicago politics - maybe. But he will dole out political favors...that's just the name of the game. Good ole boy network will still thrive with mostly the same players, but it will go by a different name.

To it's so simple

There is more to prices than simple supply and demand. You forgot the speculators who drove the oil futures up, and pure greed through record profits. The speculators ditched the market when wall street crashed, and less people are driving. The laws of supply and demand are not so simple in modern society. If it were true, the price would have came down a long time ago when the crude supply was huge (gas was still near $4 a gallon).

@La La Land
So glad you have had Rush tuned in daily.
Everything you mention about "Chicago politics" is such garbage I can't believe you eat up such trash.
Remember, Bush is still the leader of America. Well, kind of.
Try waiting a couple of years before you parrot Rush and Sean's hate. But then again when your radio god speaks, he is making millions off of the backs of mindless sheep. I would not care to listen to the voice's that are ripping Americans apart.
At least the ones that are manipulated like putty by such lies.

C.L. Nelson

I see young couples paying over $400 a week for groceries. It seem outrageous that young people want the very best of everything? Wow! Maybe this is a wake up call that things will certainly be changing all around the globe. This IS a political war against we the consumers. Everyone will have to obey and bow down to more and more sacrificing in the future. What did our parents buy for $400 a month? Wages were a lot lower, food prices, gasoline, etc. But believe me they sacrificed years to obtain the luxuries we take so much for granted. Are you STILL wearing hand-me-downs mom and dad? Thanks loads for the lesson.

Watcher

By the time the liberals get through with things during the Obama administration the U.S. will have a thirty trillion dollar national debt---a recipe for a complete economic collapse!

GoodGuyGary

I wonder what kind of food people will get for $400 a week...steak every day? Sashimi every lunch? It must be the red wine, but since I don't drink, I save a lot on that department.

gold digger

The cure for everything is to borrow more money.

Liz

I was told at work that our overtime will be cut for this new year. No more ways to earn extra bucks. Food had better come down. I shop at Walmart which has the lowest prices on staples I can find. I buy little meat cuz that hasn't really come down much at all. I don't think that prices come down as fast as they go up. Stores must be trying to make up some of their losses.

Reality Check

No young couples are paying $400 a week for groceries. That's a load of bull.

You may now resume your pointless ideological argument.

Democratic values?

Democratic values? What a laugh! You are of course
refering to Bill and Monica, Jennifer Flowers,
Hillary and cattlegate, whitewater, rose law firm, et al, Barney Frank's bargin basement prositition ring, Ted Kennedy's car, and lets not forget Wm. Jefferson's cold cash or Sandy burglar's missing documents! Yes, we all know about Democratic values all to well. Now here we are with Obama not even in office yet and we hear about even more democratic "values" with "Boggy"and Bill Richardson. Democratic "value" = if it moves, tax it! If it moves too fast, regulate it. If it stops moving, bail it out, all the meanwhile lie, cheat steal and resdistribute and call it "change"!

demoratic values

Let's see, William Jefferson, Charlie Rangel, Barney Frank, Blagojevich, Jesse Jackson Jr., Bill Richardson... the list goes on and on!

That's more than One thing to remember! I guess that libs still have trouble with the truth. Must be all the koolaid they drink and the BDS they suffer.
