What a great year, THANKS FOR THE RIDE!!!
Kyle, Thanks for picking Utah!
Johnson for OC | 3:03 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
I think Brian Johnson proved last night that he can run the offense better than Ludwig. The way the Utes played the 1st quarter last night with the no huddle offense and Johnson calling the plays, I think they could beat almost anyone in the country. If the Utes had played that way against TCU and Oregon State they would have killed them.
re:Johnson for OC | 3:20 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
What a great idea! He spent alot of time on the field and on the sidelines while he was injured so I bet he could do a great job!

I have to say that Utah played a great game last night. Great season!
Now I hope BYU can do it next year or TCU.
GO MWC!
Utes own this State!! | 3:22 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Thank you UTES!!! For going to your bowl games and representing your conference well by WINNING!! For consistently beating 5 ranked opponents this year, including number one Bama, and making Lou Holts, Barry Switzer and co. eat their words!!Thank you for finally silencing loud mouth BYU fans, who now are now on the quest to do what the Utes have done TWICE!! Thanks for the best season ever, with many more to come. BRAVO Kyle and Co. you are officially the most accomplished and recognized team in this state, not to mention college football.
Go Utes! | 3:26 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Coach Whittingham's personality certainly contributed to the Utes realizing and achieving their potential. Why did Utah achieve BCS success while other small school - including the one down south - failed? Simple. First, Whittingham is not a whinny-A (and that's really, really important). Second, he doesn't focus on "what-ifs" instead using his time to create "did-happens." Third, he never played the "oh-look-at-me, I'm-just-a-small-little-loser-futile-trying-to-overcome-my-not-good-enough-syndrome-and-temporarily-outperform-my-true-abilities" card. What a horrible card to play; in essence, by playing the card you admit that you are weak, under-qualified, and a long-shot that doesn't really feel legit in the constant competition with big boys. Whittingham's success comes from believing he and the team are better than their opponent; excuses are ignored and results are expected. He wants to play the best, be the best, and he's willing to prove it. What's not to like about the man?
BYUFan | 3:37 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
I hope Utah is #1 with a 13-0 record. Like BYU was in 84 12-0.

Although I'm a true blue BYU fan, I want to congratulate the Utes and their fans on a fantastic season. Although some of the BYU faithful will be childish enough to call me a "traitor" I have to say that any success by either team helps the other-- and the conference. What a terrific game plan and execution! That's where BYU (in the big games) seems to fall flat lately. Bronco appears to go in with the "it's just another game" mindset and that just doesn't work. You have to go all out the way the Utes did last night. It was awesome to see the talking heads (Switzer and company) eat their words big time.
You sent Alabama home with their tails between their legs and the BCS faithful something very sour to chew on. And now we have more compelling fodder for a playoff. Nice job!

Great game lastnight. Utes ROLLED the Tide. Awesome year. GO UTES!!!!!!

Way to represent the Mtn West, I didn't think there was a good chance for a victory, I was just glad that my cougars weren't in this game. However I'm a beliver and I was wrong.Way to go you deserve all the RESPECT.

Great game Utes. I just wish that your fans were as good as you are. As I read the above comments, I just had to laugh. Having spent many years in Oklahoma and seeing them play, the Utah fans just wish they could play as well as the boys from Norman. Trust me Utah fans, your Utes would be smashed down and your fans would be eating crow for months to come. Bama was not prepared to play and had their thoughts somewhere else. If you played in the Big 12 or SEC you would be bottom dwellers. Week-in and week-out you would prove me right. Just sit there in your little "happy valley" and enjoy your coulda, shoulda, woulda fantasy thoughts.
True Blue | 4:04 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Utah did play a great game last night. It was good for the state of Utah and also for the MWC. Even though I'm a BYU fan, I have to tip my hat to the Utes. They were truly the better team this year. Hopefully, the team from down south will have a year next year as the Utes had this year. Good Job Utes. Way to make the state of Utah proud!
CougarKeith | 4:03 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
I really am happy for the Utes! Way to go! I feel sorry for them though, because the majority of their fans were hoping they just didn't get creamed! Where is your faith! I think the Utes really outplayed the Tide, and I felt they could win, although I AM NOT A UTE FAN. I am happy for them though since BYU blew their oportunity for the BCS this season.
Utah certainly made the case for a Playoff, and the discriminatory BCS to include all CONFERENCES! They should go by Strength of Schedule, not strength of Conference because I think Utah, Boise St., Utah in 2004, all have proven that 3 out of 4 times (Hawaii Included), The BCS Mighty have gotten beaten hardily! Way to go Utes!!!
BYU Fan pulling for Utes | 4:02 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
As a Cougar fan, I began watching the game pulling for BAMA because that is what we do....we want Utah to lose but this game was different. As the game "ROLLED", I gradually starting cheering for Utes and by games end was a fan of your team. I was happy for you all when it ended. The BCS is crap and you guys were perfect and you should be # 1 and have trumped all my arguments with you all. Congrats and I hope we can do it next year.
re: Dennis | 4:18 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Better keep your mouth shut because if you don't than Florida will probably shut it for you. See the poll on ESPN.com all of the country except Oklahoma and Florida think that the Utes deserve part of the national title. I'm sure you were one of the ninety percent that predicted the Utes would lose (as was I) but you need to give respect where respect is due. The Utes can play with anyone!
Re: Dennis | 4:01 p.m. | 4:23 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
You just don't give up, do you! You are the one in the fantasy world because you continue to make predictions about games that will not be played. Other BYU fans have expressed their disdain for what you are doing on these boards, so why don't you stop? You have very bizarre behavior!
Sooners | 4:24 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009

BYUfan | 4:33 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Love the Ute win! Kudos to Utah and Coach W. Congrats to Utah on an outstanding season. Most of the BYU fans were rooting for Utah last night. Don't believe those who would say otherwise. That win helps open BCS doors for everyone in the MWC.
To Dennis | 4:39 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
We will sit in our happy valley and enjoy our "we did it" reality. Did you watch the game? And to say Alabama wasn't prepared to play?? Are you kidding me? I think great teams come prepared every time they step on the field. Just another example as to why the Utes were over and above the better team yesterday.

I'm sorry your feelings have been hurt in all of this. It must be difficult to realize that your program isn't head and shoulders above everyone else.

You are only as good as your last game. So; what does that say about Bronco and his boys who got schooled by an average PAC-10 team?

It tells me that BYU's priorities are in the BCS but not of the BCS.

Re: Dennis,

You sound just like one of "those" commentators before the game started. They sounded pretty sure of themselves also. Only to be embarrassed realizing that they are not as smart as they thought they were.
MWC Fan | 5:16 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Off topic, but we now have another reason for the MWC to leave behind theMTN for sports coverage. Not only does not every vendor provide coverage, but it is evident it also cheats the MWC of national coverage. Last night was possibly the first night many across the country watched the Utes. Most folks are unaware of the level of play in this conference. This will lead to Utah being left out of national title consideration. If sports fans in America could watch Utah, TCU, and BYU on the weekends or week days, they would better understand how competitive this conference is. Forget the fact the theMTN broadcasts horribly, commentators are novice, and cameras often lose track of the plays. Lets once and for all drop theMTN. Otherwise, Utah and BYU should begin negotiations to enter the PAC-10 and make it the PAC-12. Both could certainly compete.
RE Dennis | 5:19 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Did you not see the game last night? Utah WON! That means they beat the #2 team in the SEC in CONVINCING fashion. If being in the top 5 is bottom dwelling, I'll take that any day. By the way, after Florida wins next Thursday, Utah will be ranked ahead of Oklahoma. But then again, we're just bottom feeders right?
CO Coug | 5:28 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009

Re: Frank Castle

Utah is on top of the college football world right now. Bringing up BYU's troubles only makes the Utes seem smaller.

Of course, if BYU wants it bad enough, they could show trolls like Dennis, and spank OU in Dallas next year.
True red | 5:31 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Switzer & Co. said during pre-game that they'd been to Bama's practices and were impressed with them being ready and serious for the Sugar Bowl. Now Saban does a "mia cupa" saying that he didn't get them ready (even though he was talking out the other side of his mouth about how he said that Utah was good some 100 times). How is it you get paid $3 million a year, know that the other team is good and not get your team ready? Sounds like an expensive oversight for Bama. But since they have a million dollar marching band, it's chump change, eh?

The thing is that Bama believed they would dominate Utah and would have their way by rollin' Utah. However, used "shock and awe" to bewilder Bama! Then Bama's thoughts were certainly elsewhere, as Dennis correctly analyzed, trying to unseize their (CENSORED).

Sorry, I don't buy the line that Bama was unprepared.

The problem with spectator sports, whether it be college footbal or youth soccer, is that there are far too many fat accountants that think they know it all. Utah had a great season and nothing can change that. As for the SEC, BCS, Oklahoma-Who?: there is far too much arrogance east of the Mountain Time Zone and Utah proved that those SEC/BSC glass-castles do indeed crash to earth . Barry Switzer, an ex-Okey, said it best last night; "Alabama showed up wishing they were playing for the national championship. Utah showed up wanting to play the Sugar Bowl." Only one team left with their integrity. As for Utah vs. Oklahoma, I'd bet my 12-year-old-daughter to the flds that Utah would more than hold their own. How good can Oklahoma be? They don't even have a ski team.

Cheap Shot | 7:12 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
The play Brian Johnson was injured on happened to be a cheap shot...he was shoved from behind after the fumble was recovered by an Alabama player.

Sabin was out coached by Whittingham last night. Sabin wouldn't even answer the question in the post game press conference on if he thought Florida or Utah was better. My money is on Florida to beat up on Oklahoma because Urban won't want to be shown up by his former team.

Utah should get Notre Dame rights with an automatic berth. Screw the rest of the conference.
re: OMR | 7:19 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Don't call Switzer an "ex-Okey" - he still lives right off the southwest corner of campus (I drove past his house about a month ago...) and is highly involved in the university community. He got his last night !!!

Blue Fan | 9:07 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Nice job Utah. Your team was awesome. No one in the country could have beaten Utah in that game. Utah is national champions no question in my mind. Just how great it would be now if Utah moved on and played the winner of the Florida-Oklahoma game in the national championship game. Play offs in college football would be a rush. We would then have no doubt who is the best.
Bronco, please take note of what Kyle and the Utes did. Being mentally ready is part of the game but the team must be physically and emotionally ready as well. The coaches must have a brilliant game plan for the next game. "Methodical execution" does not cut it!
Good job Utes. You killed a lot of birds with one stone. BCS vs Playoff. MWC can compete with anyone. BCS conferences very scared of the MWC. MWC bid for BCS conference. The BCS love for money is embarrasing them.
The "A" | 9:56 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Hey Dennis: "If you played in the Big 12 or SEC you would be bottom dwellers. Week-in and week-out"

At least we talk about games that have been played.

Half of the Big 12 and half of the SEC are no better than the bottom half of the Mtn West.

Apparently the #1 team in the Mtn West is a lot better than the #2 team in the SEC.

And by the score of the game are probably just as good as the #1 team in the SEC.

"SO" go back and hoe some corn, wrassel a cyclone or do what ever it is that you do. Just do it back there where life is basically meaningless.
Dont be blue | 10:38 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Y fans are pathetic. Seeing the Bama fans down in New Orleans, we saw what fans with real tradition act like. they're confident, but they dont live in the past. They have true tradition and a football culture. They know how to tailgate and they spend money during bowl games.
BYU fans act and think that they have this rich tradition. THEY'RE 9-21 in bowl games. They have never been to a meaningful bowl game in their history. They have had one undefeated season in their entire history - and it was a quarter of a century ago.
They don't have the athletes to go undefeated in a season. They don't even have the athletes to beat teams with speed and athlete like TCU, Utah, or even Arizona.

Get used to it. utah will now own recruiting. They'll get the LDS athletes who BYU NEEDS to get to be competitive. PLUS, they'll get the non-LDS athletes that would never want to visit Provo.

Get used to it, zoobs!

From a pathetic Y Fan | 11:06 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
I love the Cougars, but the Utes did everything this year that we had hoped to accomplish ourselves. As much as it pained me to do it, I found myself referring to the U as "we" during the game. Congrats to the Utes on a remarkable season! Simply outstanding! Utah is the only team in the nation that can claim no one could beat them. Not TCU (an underrated and powerful program itself), not Oregon St. (who knocked off USC), not BYU (who, admittedly, was gently overrated at #17), and not #4 Alabama. Who can confidently claim that they could top the Utes this year in light of the confidence everyone had that Alabama would roll in the Sugar Bowl.

To those who would claim that Alabama wasn't mentally prepared for the game, the following: Good teams not only have talent and intelligence, they get mentally prepared to play the game. Because Alabama may not have gotten up for the game is not an excuse, it's further evidence of the Utes' superiority.

Well done, Utes. I hope my Cougars can catch you next year.

Dennis, please go away and post your comments on the SEC and BIG 12 blogs!

Nobody here wants to hear about things that can't and won't happen. Go on living in your DREAM WORLD where the little guys can't compete.

It's amazing how your comments MIMIC the ones which were written by Alabama fans just before the game started!

Nobody in their right mind wants to play Utah. The last few years our Bowl Games have become a Graveyard for the opposition. The Utes are 8-0 in recent Bowl Games.

My hope is that TCU, BYU, Utah or Boise State are in the same position next year. 12-0 and beating up on another BCS team.

UTE4LIFE | 11:17 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
I have to say that I am seeing something on these boards that I never in my life expected to see. Cougar fans having the class to come on here and give the Utes sincere congrats. I want to say to each of you thank you for showing that kind of class. I was truely rooting for your cougars to win the Vegas bowl. That was truly important for the conference as a whole to win every bowl game. I also want to say to my fellow Ute fans, grow up and act like you've been there before, because you have. Do not act like the BYU fans acted for all those years they were shoving our faces in it. It is no more becoming for us to act like that than it was for them! Great job UTES!
re: Don't be Blue | 11:16 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Congrats to Utah first of all. Great game, you took it to Bama. You are right when it comes to us not getting certain athletes. As far as the recruiting goes, we'll still hold our own with you. last point by saying that we can't hang with TCU, Utah, or even AZ, Ummmm, we beat all of those teams the two previous years. Enjoy the well deserved victory, kiss Kruger and Smith goodbye to "the league", and we'll look forward to playing you next year.

Go Cougs!

Raise em if you got em for the Utes of Utah!

The Utes set the tone for how everyother non BCS team should play when they step on a big collegiate stage...they need to learn from the Utes and do it with a chip on their shoulder. They need to show heart, passion, and a will to win. The Utes commanded the respect of Alabama because they jumped all over them from the beginning and never called off the attack. It is refreshing to watch a team like that play. Hats off to the Utah program and its players.
Sincere congrats from a cougar | 11:47 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Congratulations to Utah -- the only double BCS buster. You did the MWC a great service. TCU and Colorado State also deserve kudos for their wins (although I really wanted TCU to beat Boise State badly to earn the MWC even more respect). It is a shame that my BYU team and Air Force did not take advantage of their opportunities to boost our conference's profile and standing.

The following is representative of commentary by a number of sportswriters (this is from a writer for Fox Sports):

"This isn't 1984 BYU; that Cougars team didn't beat anyone as good as the 2008 Oregon State team, much less a TCU or an Alabama. This isn't 2004 Utah or 1999 Marshall or 1998 Tulane. So where, really, should Utah be put in the final rankings? If you're going to say No. 1, no matter what happens in the BCS championship game, it's hard to argue."

As a BYU alum and fan this is difficult to say, but I would vote Utah #1 without hesitation. The BCS system needs to be broken permanently and that would help.

Again, congrats to Utah -- you did our conference proud!
