No doubt the mythological national championship will not go to the Utes; too much money on the line for the big programs.
If Florida wins, no question the Utes will have an arguement and should garner plenty of votes in the AP poll.
If Oklahoma wins, they will have a tougher arguement, particularly if Texas also wins. Simply because people will argue that the Big-12 was stronger than the SEC and the Utes "could never go undefeated in the Big-12."
My prediction:
With a Florida win the Utes will be guarenteed the #2 spot. USC should not be ranked ahead on the fact that their only common opponent, Oregon State, was an "L" for USC and a "W" for Utah. further, Penn State would drop as would OU in this scenario. That leaves Texas, who clearly will not have the resume the Utes have owing to their loss to TTech. Also, a Florida win over OU lessens the mystique of Texas' win over OU.
When's the national championship parade? U of U Marketing Department are you listening? SLC Mayor? Governor? Don't sit on your hands like you did in 2004!!! Declare the Utes college football's #1 and give us a national championship parade!
As a BYU fan, now living in England, I was totally impressed by the teamwork, the play calling, and the execution of the Utes. I went one quarter to the U, and felt a little pride in what they accomplished. Congratulations to a great program. They deserve to be #1 in my book. They represented Utah dramatically well, and the whole state, not to mention the Mountain West Conference, will benefit from what Coach Whittingham has created and executed. Well done, guys!
They showed a portion of the after game interview of Saban and three Bama players. Saban was asked where he thought Utah should be placed in the polls. He totally skirted around the question and gave some lame answer about his team.
As a cougar fan, I cheered for the Utes whole heartedly. It was great to see them destroy the vaunted SEC team, supposedly one of the best in the nation. Certainly, didn't look that way last night. Bama looked worse than BYU against the Utes defense.
And still there will be little or no talk of the Utes being national champs. What a farse.
Great article, and right-on-the-money analysis and reporting. Finally, a member of the news media who gets it...
Utah proved they are worthy to be in the title discussion. Now, if only other members of the AP would award them the split title they deserve.
As a true-blue BYU fan, I congratulate Utah for an amazing game and year. You have made all of Utah and the entire MWC proud.
To the Utes: I came late, I am sorry. I apologize.
But didn't you like the present I gave yah?
Santa
I'm true blue, but I don't remember being any more excited than I was throughout the game last night. You were wonderful. We are all so proud of you.
Saban just doesn't know how to say that a team coming from a non BCS conf. is #1. I believe this Utah team is very much deserving of that ranking this year. Who is the only undefeated team in the Nation? Not Florida, not Oklahoma, not Texas, not USC, only UTAH.
Yes, SLC give them a National Championship parade.
That was an impressive win last night. Although I don't think they should be #1, the Utes should be ranked in the top 5. I don't think they would have gone undefeated in the Big 12 or SEC. I wish we could have a playoff system! When are we going to get rid of the JOKE called the BCS? Last night proved there are good teams from other conferences and that you need to play the game to find out who is the better team. The sad thing is, the Utes losing their offensive and defensive coordinators along with a bunch of key Seniors. Looks like a rebuilding year coming up.
Go Cougars!
Utah deserves to be the National Champion! The BCS sucks!!
Way to go UTAH. Way to go fans of BOTH Utah and BYU who have enough class to congratulate and acknowledge a GREAT Utah team. To the loser postere fans of BOTH BYU and Utah. . .take your juvenile whinning, what if's and gloating somewhere else. If BYU can do this in teh future this Ute will be congratulating them on a great year. Here's to all football fans w/ class and stick it to the JR High posters.
As hard as it is for me to say this....(sigh)...that was an awesome game to watch last night. Congrats to the Utes for an amazing season and an even better win against the Tide. Hopefully BYU will rise to the challenge next year and compete to the level the Utes did this year.
13-0. Undefeated is enough explanation, no computer formula necessary. Beat Pac10,Big10 and SEC (Bama was ranked #1 for 5 weeks). Also, please note Cougars scored more on us than Bama! Maybe the MWC deserves an automatic bid if we keep the BCS....
never have i heard excuses for loosing blamed on an offensive lineman not being there. funny. from what i saw, their pass protection was lacking from both corners and the last time i checked, there are a lot of spots to run at on a football field. waaaa waaa my o lineman got suspended and thats why we got smoked on BOTH SIDES of the ball. ha ha ha ha.
If Max Hall was humble, and put team first like Brian Johnson, the Cougars would stumble less on offense. Way to go Utes and roll out the Tide. What a coaching staff at all levels. Here's to a great season and a 13 and 0 ride that is number ONE in all of college football. As far as I see it the remaining games are to see who gets ranked in the rest of the top ten, from second to number ten.
After a season reading comments by BYU fans, I'm glad the Utes won. Compared to the alternative, the Utes are a class act. The Utes serve Utah well. Unlike, BYU, the Utes are a team, you don't need to belong to a special club to like them.
I was highly impressed last night with the Ute performance. We could see how the defense could get to any QB to sack or force a turnover. The game showed how lame the BCS system is. Utes should be #1 in the nation. Go MWC!
Cmon Nick misquoted Nick Sabin.
Congrats Utes. You have my vote as 1. There was no doubt who was the better team last night. Very impressed.
There's no way the Utes can place higher than 3rd in the final poll because of the stinking BCS broken (forever!!!!) system. The winner of the championship game will be #1, then USC, then Texas if they win or Utah if Texas loses. And the loser of the championship game will have two losses and may still place ahead of Utah. The system is broken and it will remain broken as long as it is placed so heavily in the hands of the media idiots and big conference voters. As long as voting decides, the BCS conferences will ALWAYS get the gold. In basketball, there's no question who the national champion is, because it's NOT a vote - someone wins the NCAA tournament. Wake up college football!!!! We're tired of screaming at you blathering incompentents.
