Frankly, I am disappointed in the mediocrity of the prize.

What?

$100 gift certificate is pretty small compared to the $4000 hospital bill they're going to receive. Congrats to the family.

You don't want medical decisions to made for the incentive to be the first baby of the new year. As it is the hospital is already hoping for the free publicity. And the tax implications on a new car are prohibitive.

It's an honor to be the first baby born, and it makes a great story for that child throughout his life. Although I am sure all the parents care about is that he's here, and he safe and doing fine being a few weeks early. They weren't expecting him so soon.

23 years ago we missed the mark of the first New Year's baby when our girl arrived early, but happy we got her in time for the tax break. Congrats on having your new son Logan!

Congratulations! The best prize is of course having a healthy newborn who was delivered by a caring and well trained medical staff, and received into a loving family who wanted him - no matter when he was born. You are all blessed. Again, Congratulations! (and I love the name Logan!)

Tax Break???? :(

I'm sorry but anyone who just sees a child as a tax break really has no clue as to how much of a blessing the child is to the family. Moms, stay home and raise YOUR child. In the long run it is cheaper and not so many bills such as $120 at least for daycare, then think about car insurance, gas, maintinance. No missing time from work because of childcare emergencies, doctor appointments and the like. I have been on both ends of the spectrum and it was better for me to stay home and raise my chid - we just lived within our means and still had a little money left for a rainy day.

If your working just to get the bigger and best things then just don't have kids as they need your time not the 'things' that are given so that you don't feel bad about the time you can't be bothered to share with them. Children grow up way to fast.

@9:48

Get off your soapbox. The mother said it in jest. Your whole posts screams "watch me, listen to me, I'm a know-it-all"....

Get a clue and get a life....

Congrats to the Hatt's!!!

re:tax break

It's better for all of us that you are staying home.

That is a darling baby! I wish the prize were bigger too, the hospital could kick in a little more:) Maybe Wells Fargo will make a donation?

He's beautiful. Congratulations.

Congrats!

Congratulations on the new addition... and I too am surprised the 'gift' isn't a bit larger?? Also, 'tax break' at 9:48 is an idiot. They were KIDDING about the tax break! Also, just because you were able, AND chose to stay home with your children does not give you the right to judge others who make a different choice. Depending on the salary, it isn't always 'cheaper' to stay home, and many families still need the income. While I was lucky enough to stay home with my kids, with money being especially tight in the very early years, that was MY choice. Some women CHOOSE to go back to work, not just for the money, but because they enjoy their work... and CHOOSE to do both. There is no one 'right way' for everyone... so ease up on the high and mighty, judgemental, short-sided garbage... you'll be better off for it.
Again, congrats to the new parents!!!

A tax break would be helpful whether mom stays home or not.

We adopted our son at a little over a year in July of the calendar year. Since he wasn't born in that year and we had custody less than 6 months we couldn't start claiming him until the following year. He was born outside the US, so it's not like another set of parents were claiming him. Still, not a big deal but I do understand the fleeting thought even jokingly that you just missed the deadline taxwise. Again no big deal. Haven't thought about it since the day we did our taxes that year, until this story.

There are financial benefits to not working as the above posted mentioned; but there are also financial benefits in a pay check. Some work more flexible hours too.

I am a SAHM. Why can't mom's or dad's return to work cause they enjoy it than the we both have to work reason? If SAHM is a choice, why can't work be an equally respected choice? There is quality child care and what's wrong with more examples of people showing the value of hard work in a child's life?

That is beautiful baby. The parents look very young. May they grow up together.

He is perfect!

Congrats! And I had to say good choice on the name for you son. I also have a boy named Logan. He is going to be 12 in Feb. Again best of luck!

Of course theyre young. This is Utah, isnt it? And to "Tax break".... lighten up!!

Tips....

She needs to support the baby's head a little more.

Also...the father needs a haircut, its looking a little shaggy.

La Verkin

I think it is awesome that the first baby of the year would appear in the small town of LA VERKIN! I live in La Verkin, and it is great to get some credit in a town that doesn't get any.

Mind Your Own Business!

I know the Hatt's and they are very happy people. They should not be judged for joking about tax breaks or they're appearances. I think that they will be really good parents and they know what they want to do with themselves. They have lots of support from friends and family as well. Besides, they are not too young either. They are adults and they know what is best for themselves.

Congrats

Congrats to the Hatt family, he is darling! As for all the negativity about taxbreaks, staying home, Dad's shaggy hair and supporting the baby's head I say shut up and leave this family alone. Let them enjoy their new son who looks happy and comfortable to me. They are new parents and they are doing just fine. Didn't your mother teach you that if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all?

Emily

Congrats! What a fun memory for you to have of his birth! When he is older, he will think it is so neat!
