Utah by 5!
BYU FANATIC | 2:14 a.m. Jan. 1, 2009
Congratulations on a great season. You have earned the recognition and the honors by being the class of the MWC. Now, seal the deal and crush the Tide. I never thought I'd find myself saying this...but, ...(gulp)...Go Utes!
Realist | 8:18 a.m. Jan. 1, 2009
Alabama will win by 21 plus points for sure. Utah just should never have been in this paticular BOWEL game. Yes a lesser game but the Sugar Bowl NO. It's a long trip back fans, besides the ridiculous costs. Big time is about to eat you friends.

I just hope we can keep it close and not get destroyed. If that happens this will be an awesome accomplishment.

I am OK if they get beat, I just hope they don't get beat bad like Hawaii did last year.
Ernest T. Bass | 9:44 a.m. Jan. 1, 2009
The Utes D will limit Alabama's scoring to 24 or fewer points. It all depends on if the offense shows up and and match points.
It will be a defensive struggle.

of luck to the Utes.

Keep on drinking the Kool-Aid...

The Utes had a GREAT SEASON, but the day of reckoning, and awakening is on it's way.

i know they share the money with the MWC. But why do they have to share it with all non BCS teams. out of 17.5 million they get only 1.4 seems kinda low go UTES.
Uteybeauty | 11:18 a.m. Jan. 1, 2009
I think our defense is capable of limiting Bama to under 30 points. It's their D that kind of scares me. Our offense will have to play the best game of the season to have a chance. But it is possible!!
MSH | 11:25 a.m. Jan. 1, 2009
U's offense is perfect for this type of game and opponent, quick drop back passing mixed with power running and some tricks on both O and D. The Utes will score points. Tide not overwhelming on offense, U will get several picks on the Tide. U's chances are very good, Tide can be beat.

This is probably the most important game in U's football history and certainly in the history of the MWC. If the U wins, the MWC (and all teams in the league) win, so for now, lay aside your other colors and go Crimson. This is a great opportunity that does not come around that often (though the U is beginning to make a habit of it).

Go Utah, just do it!
BamaGunny | 11:30 a.m. Jan. 1, 2009
I have received/read this sports page since finding out you guys were picked to play in the Sugar Bowl. Not trying to blow smoke up your baffles, but the Ute fans have more class and sports sense than any others I've read in a long while.

We know that Coach W. will have your team prepared. Your players address the media in a poised, mature way. The whole of the Utah team reeks of confidence and comfort. It scares me a bit. I think Alabama respects the Utes and knows there will be a fight tonight.

It's great to play a quality opponent. If you can make it to New Orleans, you will never regret it. No place like "Nawlins!" Good luck tonight and thanks for the great reading this past month. Utah fans are among the best anywhere.

If Bama can get past the last remaining undefeated team in America, our season will be a great success. If we get beaten by Utah, we can hold our heads up and still have had a great season.

Happy New Year, good Luck tonight (but not too much), Semper Fi! and Roll Tide!!!
Mackey | 11:52 a.m. Jan. 1, 2009
Utah should've been Fiesta Bowl because Texas and Alabama would've been a much higher aticipated matchup with two elite teams facing off in New Orleans. I think Utah could beat OSU but Alabama is too strong and dominating on both sides of the line. But you never know and that's why they play the game.
Boise Cougar | 11:59 a.m. Jan. 1, 2009
Count me in as another die-hard Cougar fan wishing the Utes luck! The Utes are a class act with good kids and quality coaches who earned every bit of this. The Utes can't afford many mistakes so I hope Whit has them ready to go. The fact that this is the second time around for many of these guys should help. I ALWAYS want the Utes to succeed except for the final regular season game. Any intelligent Cougar fan does. Go Utes!

Looking at who is returning next season, I think the early balance of power is probably in this order - TCU, BYU, Utah, CSU, AFA and then the rest. I like BYU's home schedule but, unless we get Manti Te'o, just don't see us keeping up with TCU's speed even in LES. I do think we get the Utes in another close one though as they rebuild too much on offense.
Take Note Bronco | 12:15 p.m. Jan. 1, 2009
As a BYU fan, I have gotten the Ute fever as this game approaches. I hope they take it to Bama and make the state and conference proud.

It has also been refreshing to hear coaches just talk like regular coaches. No scripture references or other gospel analogies or Covey-isms. I don't think I had to read into anything Whit has said all week. The Utes are probably close to half LDS with many kids that live the honor code every day. Mendenhall needs to COACH FOOTBALL and let the huge LDS support structure already in place at the Y provide the rest!
One day... | 12:27 p.m. Jan. 1, 2009
Win or lose, this game is great for the whole Mountain West. We can now point out the nation that we're here, and regardless of all our many handicaps we can play the game with them. Maybe not win, not yet, but it is not impossible.

Good job to the Utes! Play hard boys, and do your best. No one at home can ask more of you.

Can we see the actual breakdown of where the 17.5 million goes? What a rip to any school, not just the utes, that has to pay money out to schools they beat! What a system. The winners should recieve a bigger share!!!
Anyway...GO UTES! Have fun and bring home that million dollar trophy!

I attended an SEC school, and currently live in an SEC state, and am sick of hearing everyone say how overrated the Mountain West is, and that Utah should not be anywhere close to the Sugar Bowl. SHUT THE NATION UP UTAH!!!! SHOW THE 89% WHO ARE PICKING BAMA (ACCORDING TO ESPN) THAT REAL FOOTBALL IS PLAYED IN THE MOUNTAIN WEST AND THAT YOU DESERVE YOUR PLACE WITH THE "NATION'S ELITE". GO UTES!!! GO UTES!!! GO UTES!!! GO UTES!!! GO UTES!!! GO UTES!!!

This site won't let me post links but if you go to Yahoo sports home page today, and then click on Dan Wentzel's review of his favorite columns for the year, and THEN go to the Dec 18th column called, "The bowl boondoggle" you will read an AMAZING (and disturbing) piece about Bowl game finances.

Read this article and it will be clear why the powers that be (the people making the money) will never, ever, ever allow any other system for picking a national except the current bowl system.

not to get all political, but it is reminiscent of the current health care debate: the health care insurance companies make SO MUCH MONEY that the structure, and solutions, revolve around them. Even though they represent the worst, most costly solutions.

The Bowl system is the same and will be next to impossible to change because of the stupid amounts of money.

Hope every reads that article!!
utah fan | 2:13 p.m. Jan. 1, 2009
Hey Rool Tide, you left out a word. Down. The correct sentence is Alabama down by 50.
Big Money | 2:26 p.m. Jan. 1, 2009
Proud of the Utes for their accomplishments but they do not deserve to be playing Alabama... Not a fan of either but Utah should not be used in the same sentence as Alabama..... Bama should be playing Texas and Utah playing Boise St...
Good Coach Whit column | 3:47 p.m. Jan. 1, 2009
Dan Wentzel's review of his favorite columns also has a good article on how coach Whittingham has blended the best of "Mormon" athlets (RM's etc) and non-mormons from out of state. Check out Wentzel's December 24th column at Yahoo Sports. The U's football program isn't about regligious references, firesides and gospel talks - but - repect for LDS players religion is an integral part of Coach W's approach without forcing it down the throats of non-mormon or out of state players.

To "Take Note Bronco" and others:

BYU is, above all else, a church sponsored university. The "Y" has a "mission" which is difficult for some to understand. Bronco is the right coach for BYU; his blending of academics, athletics and religion is deliberate, and in keeping with the "mission" of BYU. Since the Church pays the bills, it is OK for the Church to set the direction and purpose of BYU, where it would NOT be OK to do that at Utah or any other school, as you have correctly pointed out. Of course Bronco isn't the same as other coaches - he isn't supposed to be! I love it when BYU wins games, but even more, I love what BYU stands for; I know Y students are not perfect but that is why they are working at getting better, and why they are so violently condemned when their imperfections show. The "Quest" is not just about football, though the football team has adopted it as a goal. It is about the balanced seeking of excellence in all aspects of life, including athletics for some. If they/we weren't so imperfect, we would not need a Quest!

I hope the Utes win, I will be rooting for them all the way. There is no reason to fear Bama, the only impressive win was at GA. The traditional SEC powers they beat were having subpar years. Then again, it is not easy to gauge the Utes. They sneeked by a couple of very mediocre teams. TCU looked very much the better team but did not have the better toe, and the QB missed some open guys. TCU has the best D I have seen from any MWC team. And BYU, we know too well Hall had an off game. Not too many teams can overcome turnovers like that. Regarding the payout, I did not know that much of it goes outside the MWC. How can one non-BCS team ever get ahead?
Prediction: I think it will be close. QB Johnson needs to have a good game and none of those silly fumbles that he tends to have on some games.
Utah by 3 thanks to a field goal by Sakoda (sp).Go state of Utah! Go MWC! and go UTES!!!!!!!!!

If the Utes win tomorrow, and I am convinced they will, then there is no question they are the number one team in the country.

The loser writers in the East (remember how bad the PAC-10 was?) will overlook them, but they will be the champs.

Thoughts | 7:32 a.m. Jan. 2, 2009
First, a great showing by the Pac10 in bowls this season shows how tough the MWC really is...We're able to play with anyone!

Second, I hope the Utes can have a decent showing. I doubt they'll do much barring a ton of trick plays. I hope they keep it close and respectable, unlike Hawaii last year.

Third, time for the QB to hit English class:
"We don't get paid nothing". If I were Chris Hill I'd consider limiting my players' access to the media. It might be a great thing for the athletic program to have the team in this game, but if they can't correctly speak at a college level then it's a pathetic billboard for the University. And a terrible shame too since the U has so many great programs and now even a Nobel winner!

Fourth, the MWC really needs to step it up in post season play, not just because this year was poor. Poor post season records reflect on perception of the entire conference.
Big Red | 7:44 a.m. Jan. 2, 2009
Utah is clearly outmatched in this game. Now your playing with the big boys. Tide will roll by 30 over the over-rated Utes from an over-rated conference.

Alabama is losing their players to rule violations. Their head isn't in the game. They are looking past the mark.

Therefore the Utes are going to roll them up.

Just stating the facts.

Also, since part of my tithing goes to pay for BYU I'm counting BYU's cut of the proceeds as part of my "donation". I'm glad the Utah Nation can help build the Kingdom.

Go Utes!!!
Darrell | 9:17 a.m. Jan. 2, 2009
The best way to stop Alabama will be to keep their offense off the field. We need to maintain clock-eating drives on offense that keep our defense fresh against the huge Alabama O-line. If we are in the game at halftime, 10 points or less behind, I think the odds fall in Utah's favor to come back and win the thing!

Go Utes!!
