BYU is a legitimate team and they are really fun to watch. I don't know how far they can go but should do well in the MWC. Being able to finish on the road is something that will worry other teams in the conference.

Cougs are gonna knock off Wake--by 10.
This is the year we win a couple in the Tourney!!
Go Cougs!

Sweet win on the road in a tough venue. Should go a long way to get this team ready to win on the road in conference play.

If this team is going to be more than "one and done" in the post season, they really need to develop a killer instinct and to put away teams late in the second half.

We will find out more on Saturday when a tough Wake Forest team comes to town. Are they for real or only pretenders on the national scene?

Impressive | 8:39 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008
This road win is impressive.

The ultimate test for BYU, however, is to go to UNLV and win (or at least keep it close).

If they can't do that, no MWC Tourney Championship.

Road | 9:04 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008
That was a nice road win for the cougars over a decent team in Tulsa. This is the most balanced BYU team in several years but their is still some heavy lifting left with WF.

Coug 4 | 9:13 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008
Great win Cougs! Let's get excited now for WF! Take it to 'em baby.

Forget all these what if posts, and other tests...stupid fans or anti-fans. Just go Baby!

Utah can have football this year since we have had basketball and football the last few years, but once again byu is clearly th best in state team in basketball
Hoosier Coug | 9:26 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008
Good road win for a better-than-expected team.

To the Rebel troll that continuously attempts to remind us that UNLV has the best team in the MWC, can we finally say that BYU is playing the best basketball going into conference play?

The biggest thing to bring away from the last two games, as others have mentioned, is BYU needs to learn how to close the games out.
Keith Suds..... | 9:47 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008
Rose and the boys have to learn how to execute down the stretch and be aware of the point differentials and the clock. I'm glad they held on cuz they almost gave it to Tulsa. Good road win fellas! WAKE up! Time for some Suds.....
RR | 9:53 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008
Amen to Go Cougs! USU struggled a lot vs. a winless baptist team at home and Utah has many struggles. BYU should be undefeated and they look great. Wake doesn't have much road experience and BYU doesn't have this long streak over a bunch of nobody's. Can't wait for the game on Saturday! Beating an undefeated #6 team will be great for the team.
Watch out Wake | 9:58 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008
Way to go Cougs. I was at the Marriott Center today and one fellow came up and purchased 24 tickets. They were going fast. It will be a sellout and the MC will be rocking as it used to do in the days of Cosic and Ainge.
Optimist Prime | 10:04 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008
Hopefully the BYU mens team can fare better then the womens team against top competition.

Keep it under a 40 point blowout and I think its a moral victory for BYU basketball.

Closing in on a 100 points in college basketball is hardly struggling in my opinion.
looney11 | 12:30 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
Next year, lets have the whole basketball team talk to the football team and talk about hussle, desire to win, never say die attitude and hussle. Maybe the they could add some of that to their schedule and finish a whole lot stronger.
Y fan since 1955 | 6:01 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
A gritty win on the road......

As to the Wake Forrest game, I remember a game in the old Smith Field House when #2 St. Joesephs came to town (1966). Nemelka (spelling), Congdon, Roberts, Raymond, et al, put a whoopin on those boys, winning 100 - 80. Then went on to win the NIT while Utah went to the final four....also the year a little Texas Western (UTEP now) team coached by Don Haskins won the NCAA Championship. As Sinatra would say: It was a very good year.
Cougar in Sandy | 6:08 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
Nice road win - need to keep working a little more at the last stretch. I am glad I got my lower bowl tickets to the shake the WAKE! Cougars will ROCK. Go Cougars!

Memphis is NOT the defending national champion. Kansas defeated Memphis last April in the NCAA championship game. GO COUGARS! Beat Wake Forest and then follow it up with another MWC championship.

Fredette,
I've got an idea that if you decided to be agressive all the time there would be no stopping you. You have an amazing ability to push the ball up the court. It is fun to watch you play!

Anybody know how Emory's noggin is doing? He landed hard and it looked like a sure concussion. Hope he's OK for Saturday. For BYU to win on the road without a starter is even better. Let's beat Wake!!!!
Chris in Texas | 7:07 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
Great road win, Cougs! Proud of you. You learned a valuable lesson from ASU, which you should have won. Now, earn a spot in the Top 25 by knocking off WF. You'll need your A game, but you play well at home, so get 'em!!!
Lucky | 7:09 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
Cougs were lucky, Utes win that game by 15 or more. Utes have an inside game and great defense, plus the best coach in the league. Cougs are living a lala land if they think their team will finish above 500 in the conference. Their weak schedule will be exposed once they play conference teams.
Good win | 7:17 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
They are a very good team. A few things they need to work on to become a great team:
1- Free throws...common guys...these are free points (im looking at you Miles)
2- Slow the game up a bit when there isnt much time on the clock and you are ahead by a few points
3- Low post passing. You guys can pass, except for in the low post. Lets work on that.
4- Watch the reaching in and silly fouls. You guys are excellent defenders, there just isnt any need for this.
Other than that, go Cougs and lets rock Wake out of the Marriot Center!

Please tell me you will be reading the comment section after BYU plays Utah this year. When we win both games (AGAIN), we will talk about who is living in lala land. You are DREAMING if you think the Utes are better than BYU this year. Dreaming.
The Utes are weak.

Aggie Fan | 8:27 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
Outstanding win Cougars, I am one of probably a few Aggie fans who actually see the wisdom in wishing the Cougars AND the Utes well, mostly because they are on our schedule and if they rise in strength so do the Aggies, imagine that simple logic??? That flies right over so many fans heads, I mean duh.

Anyway excellent win and I have no qualms saying this Cougar team is better than I have seen in years. Probably better than Wesley and Lyday's team that won in Logan awhile back.

I am behind you Cougars-NICE WIN!

Mark my prediction BYU will take down WAKE, watch. I have always held BYU and USU could take down many top opponents if they were given the chance, this will be one of them. Go Cougars and good work on actually scheduling a tough opponent. It is one beef I have with the Ags not scheduling some big games. I know many refuse to make the trip to Logan but it sure would be nice:)

Cant Wait | 8:44 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
for Wake to come to town! They are way more athletic than us and it's going to be a huge challenge to beat them. They are looking really good. I think the difference will be 3 point shooting. If we can hit our 3's, I think we've got a shot. if not, could be a long night. Having said that, we are looking really good this year. We could be looking at a 3 or 4 loss season which will be good enough for a #5 or #6 seed in the tournament!
Matt | 8:47 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
This team is fun to watch. There is more consistency than last year and the three pointers just drop. BYU basketball is awesome.
Michigan alum | 8:53 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
I was impressed with the Y's defensive adjustments in the second half. They picked off many interior passes and converted due to Fredette's athletic ability.
I'm concerned about interior post play (offense). The Y should not concentrate on jump shooting, as good as they ARE.

THEY MUST WIN ONE AT UNLV AND SDSU TO CONVINCE THE NEIGH-SAYERS THAT THEY ARE READY TO WIN AT THE DANCE.
@ 1955 fan | 9:01 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
It was a very good year in 1966! MANTI won the state championship that year. When it was only two classifications (A&B). Wilbur Braithwaite led this team to the title with Paul Frischknecht, Leland Thompson & Doug Ludvigson. That was a very good year indeed! Manti has only won 2 titles since then and that was in the watered down 2A (out of 5 classifications).

I have been a BYU fan for many moons. This is the deepest BYU Basketball team ever. They have had better individual players over the years although Lee and JT would be in the top 30. But they have never had 11 guys this good. The 11th man on this team could have started on many many BYU teams over the years. BYU will win the conference in the regular season. They will show us what they are made of in the Conference tournament.
Memphis? | 9:04 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
Defending national champion Memphis? I guess the writer turned off last season's national championship game before Kansas came back and sent it to overtime, then won. You'd think editors might help out and catch something like that.

I hope BYU can show up against Wake Forest. They haven't fared so well against ACC teams over the years. UNC Tar Heels look like they are in a league of their own this year!

I was at the game last night and was thrilled to see BYU come back in the second half. Excellent adjustments on defense with Tulsa's center & guard play.
What's the status of Emery? He took a hard fall & didn't return to the game.
Wake Forest will be an excellent test for the Cougs.
Go Blue!

Re Cant Wait:

Let's not have our expectations too high, here. BYU has only played three quality teams so far (USU, ASU, and Tulsa). They've played well to date, but there is still a lot of basketball yet to be played.

Let's enjoy the ride and see how our team ends up. Remember, the MWC is pretty good this year.

I am excited as is everyone else about BYU's overachieving team. However, don't forget the "Quest" thing.
Crimson Club | 9:28 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
None of this will matter. BYU will have a great season this year, but will lose in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. They always do. The last time BYU won a Tournament game was in 1991.

BYU needs to take a hard look at why they can't compete in the Tournament. It is embarassing, and one of the many reasons BYU Basketball doesn't get much national respect. Win Tourny games and BYU will start to get respect.
backcourt | 9:32 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
The reason the cougs have been one and done in the NCAA in recent decades is weak gaurd play. The utes wouldn't have gone anywhere without Andre Miller. This year's back court of Fredette/Emery may be the best since Ainge/Craig.

To "Lucky". Obviously the air (dirty, inversion) up in Northern Utah is effecting your mind. How can you honestly say that Utah is better than BYU, and also say that the Utes have a better coach. Have you been living under a cave. Look at the record, not only this year, but the past couple of years. BYU clearly has a tougher non-conference schedule, and has also beaten a couple of teams the Utes couldn't (Utah State, Idaho State). Luke Nevill is an enigma, and Boylen is all hat and no cattle. Finally, any team that loses to Southwest Baptist should just give up basketball all together! Utah will be lucky to get an NIT bid this year.
UNLV | 9:59 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
Our team is way underachieving this year. Wink is hurt. I don't see us winning it all this year. Our big guy quit the team. We don't have any inside game. BYU wins it's first MWC tournament in Las Vegas this year.
Anonymous | 10:18 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
Any update on Jackson Emery? How bad was he injured? Will he be playing on Saturday?
Memo to all basketball fans | 10:18 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
WE HAVE ALREADY STARTED THE NCAA "BIG DANCE". Accumulating a big pre-conference win number vs legitimate teams, along with winning your conference regular season, AND your conference tournament will make a huge difference in your NCAA Tournament seeding. This is what has escaped BYU since day one. This my gripe against playing cupcake teams before the conference schedule starts. The other aspect is the MWC doesn't have any strength of schedule reputation whatsoever over the years (as in a poor record in the Tournament). Even if BYU sweeps the conference and the conference tournament; they will not receive a very high seeding, again, due to the poor results of many previous seasons of one or two and out results. This may be a doomsday attitude, but I think it is reality. It comes down to recruiting, recruiting, recruiting. MWC teams cannot compete with other universities in attracting the super elite players. BYU is particularly hampered by entrance requirements/the honor code. I do like the job Coach Rose and his staff are doing with the current crop of players. I worry about the lack of a lowpost offensive threat, and the preponderance of 3's. They need to crash the lane/and/draw/fouls/or/dish/off/for/better/shots/dunks.

do you really think the Lord cares who wins a basketball game.... If the Lord cared... BYU would win everything since its his school... get a clue your ignorance is an embarassment to our religion and the university... How the players live off the court unfortutely has no bearing on the teams success... anyone who thinks otherwise has a twisted understanding of the LDS Faith and should seek council
