Wrestling fills up its gyms all

all the time...go watch Delta--Wasatch match next Friday, you won't find a seat in the house. Saw more fans at a Spanish Fork--Springville wrestling match than most basketball games, the Box Elder--Mountain Crest is standing room only...I was also wondering whether girls basketball fills up the gyms, they get plenty of coverage. The UHSAA wrestling tournament fills the rafters of UVSC, the all-star dual has had crowds of several thousands, the Rocky Mountain Rumble will bring in teams from several states and will boast a field of nearly 65 teams...again anonymous and UNTIL, just because our newspapers have their heads in the sand along with you doesn't mean the sport isn't thriving in participation, interest or fan attendance...,

Anonymous

oh my gosh. Just to settle this dispute, people care about wrestling. Big whoop someone said nobody does. Get over it!

To Wrestling fills...

Personally, I wonder if there are any Delta, Wasatch, Spanish Fork, Springville, Box Elder, or Mountain Crest fans that can read a newspaper. I don't blame DesNews for not publishing articles about wrestling. Plus, all of the above mentioned schools aren't exactly in population centers. I'm from Southern Utah. Just get over it. If you want feature stories about local athletes, talk to your local papers.

HS Sports

I think there should be a lot more in this article and in this paper about high school athletes. I'm sure there are plenty of athletes who deserve a lot more attention. There were a handful of swimmers who were All-American last year and who went or are going on to Division 1 colleges (that people care about, sorry wrestling--Iowa?). But what it comes down to, student athletes shouldn't compete to try to win the eye of one of the big newspapers, they should compete for the love of their sport.

But more coverage would be nice fans like myself.

Individual Sports

I'm with "Sports Lover", the sports that feature individuals are the only sports where you can pick one true top athlete. All others make it too difficult to compare stats when different teams play in different classes against different opponents. I love sports like track and swimming where you are the fastest, or you aren't. There's no arguments, and no excuse.

And to "soaptheman", your comment "Our sport is by far the toughest of them all" is inappropriate. I have no respect for athletes who dare belittle any other sport. Have some class.

Gross

Wrestling is the grossest sport that could possibly exist. Sweaty guys grabbing each other for 3 minutes at a time. The practice room stinks to no end. I don't know how the coaches could stand being in there. No one watches wrestling. Now wrastling, that's another thing.

FRiDAY NiGHT RiDER

Are you kidding me about the wrestling schools not being in population centers. SF is 5A MC, Springville and BE are in 4A (Mtn. Crest is only a couple hundred students from being 5A)and Delta and Wasatch are 3A. I have seen more people at wrestling tournaments and matches than any girls basketball game. I have even seen more people at wrestling events than some boys basketball games. And fans of those schools can read, I am one of them. Perhaps you should take your ignorance else where as your senseless rants just make you look uneducated. Wrestling is a big deal in Utah weather you like it or not, Get Over It.

RE: Gross

I'm sorry we've offended you "gross" maybe you can spritz some perfume on the practice room. I'm sure you have some in your purse. O and I guarantee if you said that to the face of a wrestler you wouldn't last "3 minutes"

Hey Jody:

Last I checked, Drill Team was a sanctioned high school sport. Lets get some coverage on the Duchesne High School Drill Team that has won 5 consecutive state titles, and will be going for a 6th this January. No other drill team in state history has done this. It's news worthy. Get down to Orem at UVU on Jan 31, and get a write up on these girls and their coaches. Thanks

Gross

By the sound of it you are very capable of spritzing all on your own. Sorry but I have never met a wrestler who made me shake in my pants. Now boxing, that's a real sport. Name two famous wrestlers? Now name two famous basketball or football players. I rest my case.

To answer your question:
"IF cottonwood and Tiumpview both show well against Alta and Bingham does that mean that 4A really HAS been the best classification the last 2 years?

NO- by the way what does 'show well' mean? If TV ends up playing Alta and beat then next year, it just gives some justification to all the TV fans that during their streak of UT county foes they can argue that they are or were the best team. The rest of 4A doesn't automatically become better than 5A.

GET A CLUE!!

5A is the better classification either way. 5A wins over 2/3 of the games every year in the head to head games. The all star games ---WOW--- talk about blowouts. The 3rd best 4A team got blown out by NR and beat a 1-9 Freemont team by 7 against their only 2 5A opponents.

Grant HS

Another note. Alta could have pulled that game off like they did the year before, but too many turnovers this year for the repeat.

Interesting notes:
Grant finished #14 in the nation and were the CIF champs and beat Poly/Long Beach. It was Poly's only loss. Poly started off the season with a blow out win over 2 time 6A Florida champ Northwestern. Northwestern was coming off a national #1 ranking in several polls. Northwestern lost in the 6A finals this year.

Why does this matter?

The Utah teams are not as far behind the so-called national power HS teams.

OK

RE:Anonymous | 1:05 p.m. Dec. 27, 2008

ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Rivals, USA today and Scout have Timpview ranked in the Top 25 in the country (which is ahead of Alta).

ESPN had TV at #50, not in the top 25. btw- Grant was #10 and Trinity #9 (after Allen, TX #2 got payback from a earlier loss to Trinity and won 5A-region 1 in TX)-Good luck next year Bingham.

SI.com -Now there is a reliable source. Poly who was ranked #2 and finished ranked #13 after they lost to unbeaten Open CA St champs Grant. What did they rank Grant after beating their #2. They didn't-Go figure.

As a UTE fan I want to send a memo to the Bronco and his coaching staff. PLEASE....PLEASE.....PLEASE... keep recruiting TV kids. I love seeing them get smoked in big games and especially on national TV. Keep them coming, need more slow guys in the secondary.

american fork beat skyline in football... that should be up there

Wrestling

Guess these knuckleheads missed the Viewmont-Davis match. Packed house at Viewmont. Last time I checked both schools are along the Wasatch Front. Problem is, they aren't in SLC.

sports fan

I can't believe how some people talk so much trash about wrestling. If you don't like it then that is fine, but don't talk smack about those kids. Pound for pound I would say they are the toughest kids in highschool. Also I encourage you to look at the average GPA of the wrestling teams. Wrestling has more honor roll kids than football and basketball combined with not near the kids. Don't talk smack about smart tough kids.

To sports fan

It's just typical for a lot people here. They still live in the 1950s.

RE: Gross

whatever man wrestlers are tougher than any other sports group. o and you want a list of famous wrestlers how about: Dan Gable, Cael Sanderson, Rulon Gardner, Pat Smith, Brian Urlacher, John Mcain, Warren Sapp and Ray Lewis were both state champs in florida. Carlton Haselrig was a NCAA wrestling champ and a pro bowler for the Pittsburgh Steelers.Yeah check the list it goes on and on O and for those of you who don't know who Jason Chamberlain is check out the article on Utah's top ten high school sport stories of the year

Anonymous

How about adding these to the list: Abraham Lincoln, Joseph Smith, Dennis Hastert (former Speaker of the House), Tom Cruise, William Baldwin, Robin Williams, Stephen Neal (New England Patriots--never played college football by the way) and Utah NFL products Ryon Bingham (two-time state champ Alta HS with Chargers), Haloti Ngata (second in state with the Ravens) and Chris Cooley (state champ and All-American and all pro with the Redkins). Also add in Rondo Fehlberg, much respected former AD for BYU and NCAA All-American. I hope some of you out there have heard of these folk!

Monika

To Anonymous, Joe Smith is not famous, don't include him in your list.
